Advanced Warfare is selling less than Ghosts

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is a pretty great game. After Ghosts last year, I thought I was just about done with the franchise, but Sledgehammer’s pew pew debut has certainly raised the bar once again and evolved the tried and tested Call of Duty formula. It’s just a shame that far fewer people are actually giving it a chance.

According to some leaked sales data by analyst firm Piper Jaffray, Advanced Warfare has sold 27% less in its first month out than Ghosts did last year, exclusively in the USA. This is after it surpassed Ghosts in its first week, showing a massive loss of steam after initial purchases and pre-orders had been cashed in.

That’s a huge decrease, especially for a game that Activision maintains is one of this year’s best sellers, but there is a reason for that. The sales data excludes digital sales of the game, which I imagine are massive in the United States. It also doesn’t take into account any sales from anywhere else in the world, which would probably have a more favourable impact on the figure.

Activision has yet to release their own sales statistics, and I firmly believe that Advanced Warfare is selling a bit better than this leak suggests. Still, after the train wreck that was Ghosts last year, I wouldn’t be surprised by a dip in year on year sales – there’s only so much the Call of Duty name can accomplish alone.

  1. Everybody warned Activision that the Call of Duty franchise was getting tiresome and that yearly installments were the right thing to do. COD was never meant to turn out like those sports games for brainless knuckleheads that keep on bringing out, oh yes, just better graphics every year.

I may just eat my words though if the digital sales come in and the figures are good, which, in all honesty, would actually be pretty bad for gamers as a whole.

I play Fifa and buy every one every year… And graphics has absolutely nothing to do with it!!! And I would also like to think of myself as a bit more than a brainless knucklehead!!
Fifa changes gameplay every year, a small thing like more realistic dribbling makes a hell of big difference to us who play it every week!! The people who play COD every week will also be able to tell you the difference year from year…

The changes are so small on a year to year basis that you basically buying a DLC. Infact CoD could learn a lesson from FiFa and just start naming the game CoD 15, cause basically it an incremental change each year.

Does seem odd to exclude download copies given the proliferation of it in this new gen. A hell of a lot of people are going that way with pre-downloading, no trips to malls, etc.

Once those are in – we shall see. I expect AW to outsell Ghosts as its “after-release” sales are probably going to be higher; given Ghosts issues, it may be many people held off, but given positive reactions may now come back on board.

Despite the snarky “Snore of Duty”s!!! below 🙂

I agree. I never thought I’d go full digital. I still buy the odd disc here and there (like my collector’s editions) but I prefer digital as it is easier with no struggle of disc swapping. In fact, I am considering selling my X1 disc games and replacing them digitally

It is quite a shame. I enjoy the game very much. The multiplayer is still very laggish, but the game is great. Then again, I haven’t played every damn CoD game the past ten years. Only 4 really.

Ok pivotal question here. Is the game still about TDM or has the local scene woken up to the other modes yet?

It seems most people still play TDM. It’s the only place we almost easily get in a match. The rest has been dead so far. I just wish they would make dedicated servers. I don’t even lag this bad on Titanfall. Then again, EA servers have been a lot better than Activision. We struggle with CoD and Destiny, but BF, PvZ and Titanfall we do good in

Normal hard working gamers can only afford 1 game every 2 months.
    A game = 1 month of petrol.

So before slapping R800 on the table, do you buy the 5 hour shooter or the 100hour Dragon Slaying game?

Well to be fair, most people are buying it for the multiplayer. The 5 hour SP mode is really just an extended tutorial. So most would get a bit more than 5 hours out of it.

I am surprised they still bother with SP. Also off-line SP considering the massive success of Destiny.

I have not ever played a COD so would not know but I know some guys who spent alot of time in the past beating the game on every difficulty and trying to beat all the challenges.

It would seem that the legacy of ghosts is not the reason for this, due to this game having a better opening week. So it is either down to that it is actually selling better because of a greater increase of digital distribution or due to the multiplayer not working properly that is causing the reduced sales. But without all sales info being taking into account the data is meaningless.
