Hatred

I am curious to play Hatred, a ridiculously controversial and ultraviolent game. When Geoff told everyone about the game, it certainly got a bunch of reactions from everyone, ranging from praise to condemnation. Now the developers have responded to the criticism with some vitriol of their own.

According to the developer update entitled “The First Storm Resisted”, the Polish studio behind the game explains that they weren’t expecting such a reaction to their reveal trailer, but they’re grateful to everyone who got upset about the content of Hatred for actually giving it more exposure:

Many can call us “attention whores” – well, we try to get world’s attention to our product and as you can see – it worked perfectly. But there are some true attention whores out there, who are trying to imply that we are neo-nazis and some other stupid stuff. Do not believe everything you read on the web, especially written by no-name pathetic bloggers or some unhappy guys commenting around the web.

Each of the developers went on to respond to criticism that they are promoting Neo-Nazi or sexist ideologies. They explain that they have been affected by all kinds of hate crimes in the past, and the game is just about gameplay, not a reflection of their real-life views. In fact, it’s argued that the game is actually more tolerant than any other.

There is one more thing – accusing Hatred to be some kind of racist game. What the hell is wrong with you, people? The Antagonist is killing everyone equally, race doesn’t matter (it’s randomly generated for all NPC’s), sex doesn’t matter (it’s random too), so you can call it the most tolerant game, promoting equality. Here everybody dies.

Are you convinced? I know the game features a ton of violent kills, but so do plenty of games. Just look at those executions in Shadow of Mordor, or people moaning about the lack of pools in The Sims 4 so they can’t drown their characters. What about all the crazy things people get up to in GTA? Yes, Hatred is extremely graphic and uses more modern forms of murder, but it still boils down to a game about killing everyone on the map, much like plenty of other games out there. Do you want to see this game boycotted? Will it be used as blame for the real world violence we see out there anyway? Or is it just another game and all this ranting and raving is simply excellent marketing?

Polish + tolerant = hated. No that doesn’t sound right. It’s just a game. A game about shooting people. I like shooting games. Doesn’t mean I like shooting shit in real life. But in a non real video game, eh, anything goes.

There is no shooting in The Witcher 3. But sword killing, bombs, traps, spells.

When it comes to PC gaming. I always think about those gamers who has a PC and wants to buy PC games but can’t because of DRM and not having internet.

You might have internet and enjoy the DRM games but there are much more people out there who don’t have internet and can’t buy PC games because of DRM. Think of others. Don’t always think about yourself.

The Witcher 3 can be played by anyone who buys the game. No internet needed. No DRM needed. Just install and play.

Destiny or Titanfall. Oh please. I like real games. Not DRM shit.

I’m teasing you budd and I do hope that The Witcher 3 delivers on all the promises. I’m purely on console now since my gaming machine got stolen so hopefully it still delivers on the console as well.

As for internet, it’s really become cheap and affordable to have it now so it shouldn’t really be an excuse not to. DRM is an effect of the rampant pirating of games on PC and I can understand why publishers push for DRM to protect their IP or not release games on PC at all. It has become a necessary evil.

          • Ryanza

            October 22, 2014 at 13:04

DRM has nothing to do with piracy. If DRM stopped piracy then I could buy that argument. But DRM has had zero effect on piracy. So DRM has nothing to do with piracy.
DRM has always been about creating a monopoly in the PC gaming market. Simply as that. Don’t believe what big corporations tell me. They will never have the interests of gamers at heart.

        October 22, 2014 at 12:28

I would not in good conscience hype a bad game. I do want The Witcher 3 to sell really well, day 1. So that stat of AAA game selling well without the need of DRM. The gaming do love to use the DRM to explain bad sales and blame it on pirates.
The Witcher 3 is a good game to fight for NO DRM awareness.

But you right about expectations. I have chummed around with expectations. I still see a good game. I do worry that people might be looking for visuals they have never seen before, the melt your graphics card kind of visuals, but The Witcher 3 being an open world game + consoles, that expectation is far fetched and I hope people are not banking all their money and expectations on that.
If you like The Witcher you will like The Witcher 3. Story, lore, Yennefer, ect. You do find that some people just don’t like The Witcher games. They don’t get it. They don’t get why we love it so much. But there are 8+ million people out there that does get it.

So if you looking for a good game with a good story. Buy The Witcher 3.
If you just want to troll me with how much The Witcher 3 sucks. Buy The Witcher 3 and let’s debate.

Just pre-order and don’t get hyped for the game. Just expect a game and you will be fine with your pre-order.

The No DRM thing is important. It means that games can’t be released with major bugs, or unfinished, or patch it later mentality. NO DRM means that developers has to try and get the game perfect before the game gets released. Expect delays.

But with DRM. Once you have activated the game on Steam and found out that the game is shit or buggy as hell, there is nothing you can do about it. You can’t even return or sell the game.

PC retail market needs No DRM. That’s the only way games will get better.

Each to their own. I personally don’t think there is a need for this game and I do think you’ll get some idiotic politician who will find some way of linking this to a mass shooting because you know “video games make us all unstable, psychopathic killers”. The developers have done well in drumming up interest in the game and I’m sure it will sell well. But looking at the gameplay, I think it will get boring very quickly. It doesn’t appeal to me and I won’t get it. I would rather run around playing Fist of Jesus than this tbh.

To be fair, there is no “need” for farming simulator. But some people play the shit out of that. And that involves killing a wide variety of innocent flora. And Deer Hunter? Man. Every single time I see that game I want to cringe. Why would you murder an innocent Deer that you don’t even intend to eat? It’s just wrong. So so wrong. In fact, I can’t think of a single video game out there that I’ve recently played that is “needed”. Got Payday for free – and it glorifies the bank heist. Totally irresponsible. Dota? There isn’t an option for peace? Unrealistic and immoral. Counterstrike? Terrorists can win? Unamerican. Immoral. Wrong. Borderlands the Presequal? Australians finally left Australia? Unbritish. Immoral. Wrong. Plus sentient robots. Just not right. Fists of Jesus? The devil has you, boy! Uncatholic. The pope might just have you excommunicated. 😉

TL;DR: I agree with everything you said. But I don’t think this game is “needed” any less than any other ridiculous game out there. And, let’s be frank, all games are ridiculous and exceed our basic requirements as they’re just entertainment. 🙂

And you’re right different strokes for different folks. I see Hatred as less desirable due to the objective goes against the moral fiber and it will certainly help the nutters out there with the “video games are evil” campaign. This game if published will end up being used by a reporters and politicians as the reason for a mass shooting.

In Postal 2 when you catch a cat, you then “attach” it to some of the guns via the cat’s butthole. When you shoot, the cat meow’s instead of the gunshot, voila, silencer!

Granted that game you could also taze someone until they fall over and convulse, and pee their pants, and you can pee on people causing them to vomit etc.

It’s a game. Which means that it is entertainment. It’s not doing anything new. It’s really fine. And it is certainly getting excellent traction because of all the hate. I’m sure most games would kill for this sort of mainstream free marketing.

Yet I’m sure that there is a possibility that someone with some pretty serious mental condition may just play the game and figure they’d like to recreate some of this in real life. But some of the worst serial killers also use the bible (or religious/political ethos of their choosing) to perform some pretty harrowing acts of violence. Yet we realise that these people are sick, and it’s not the fault of the material they cite.

Fact of the matter is, you can still load up GTA and go on killing sprees to your little murderous heart’s content and still ignore the story aspect for hours on end.

It comes down to freedom of choice. If you want to go on a killing spree in GTA you can chose to do that but it’s not the ultimate objective of the game. Hatred the only objective is the killing spree. So I would say it is less guilty by virtue of the player.

I wonder what the actors are thinking while filming the scenes, I laugh at the faces they pull, the noises they make, the way they have to move and the decisions their characters make in the movie.
