Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater franchise returning

Looks like Tony Hawk got a little nostalgic while talking on his Demolition Radio show on SiriusXM. When looking back at his Pro Skater series, he stated, “We’re working on a game, we are working on a game, it’s pretty cool.” A new Tony Hawk game for the new console generation? Yeah, that is pretty cool.

If you were a console gamer back in 1999, you’re likely to have fond memories of the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series. The gameplay was maddeningly addictive, nailing that “easy to learn, difficult to master” hook.

The first six games in the franchise spanning 1999-2004 received almost universal acclaim, but the series began to lose momentum while trudging through the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 generation. Eventually, Tony Hawk famously face-planted with the Ride and Shred titles, released in 2009 and 2010, respectively. A bit of that original spark was captured again with Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD in 2012, and if nothing else, it at least seemed to be an admission from the franchise that they had to return to their roots.

No details on this new title are available just yet. Robomondo has developed the last three Tony Hawk games, but no hints have been made as to who is developing the new one. Still, IGN has confirmed that this title is indeed coming, as an Activision rep has said, “Activision can confirm that they have something in the works with Tony Hawk, more info is coming soon.”

It’s hard not to look forward to it, but here’s hoping that it can recapture the magnetism of some 15 years ago.

I would love to see another Tony hawk game adding something new but sticking to the formula that made so many fans. It would have kinda a retro feel now, sure may not be realistic but skate does that! Speaking of which Skate 4 on PS4 make it so people!! Next Gen better graphics and physics!!

It’s all gonna be about the Soundtrack…. If they fill it with late nineties/ early 2000s Skate Music (NOFX, RANCID, RATM, PENNYWISE, and possibly some Pantera) It’ll do fine….

It’s weird how they released 6 games over 5 years and those games all received critical acclaim but when CoD or Fifa release a game a year they are just making more of the same.
Although each of the the those Tony Hawk games may have innovated upon the existing framework a lot more than the CoD and Fifa series.

Disclaimer: I have never played any of the Tony Hawk games.

They didnt get critical acclaim for all 6 games they did for the first 2. THPS was killed due to them releasing one every year like COD and people got tired of it as the innovation stopped. The same happen to Guitar Hero they just released a title every year with little innovation and now no one is interested.

The same that is happening with COD now …

Dude I loved THPS. Was one of the coolest games back in the day. I hope the new one will be as good as the good old memories recall.

School was tricky, that back quad section ruined the potential in gettin 100% in a single run.
and the one bell was nearly impossible to wallride with the quaterpipe lip so close to it, just turned into a grind.

I hope they adopt/develop the “flick-it” system from Skate. Skate was fresh and new, and I miss it.

I didn’t really like Skate. As a non-skater it was a bit too realistic. I could never master it. I did however love the Tony Hawk series. So I think they should include the control scheme of both and give the player options to switch between the two.

I second your option to include both systems. It was way more difficult to master, but there was nothing as rewarding as seeing a line, putting in the time and eventually nailing it, recording it, editing it and uploading it.

I can respect that and I can imagine the sense of accomplishment. I guess skaters get that feeling in real life too.
