Drama and confusion between Bukkit and Mojang

I will admit that there was a time I got lost in Minecraft. It was quite the addiction, resulting in me going to bed at sunrise a good few times. Looks like there is drama outside of the blocky world at the moment, between Bukkit and Mojang specifically.

From my understanding, Bukkit is a set of tools which allow people to create and manage mods for Minecraft (please do correct me if I am wrong). It looks like there has been some sort of misunderstanding, or some kind of attempt at an uproar by one of the Bukkit Team members named EvilSeph. He wrote a rather lengthy forum post a couple of hours ago, where he details the discontinuation of Bukkit.

This is the end, it’s time to say goodbye. It’s been an amazing run and we achieved much more than anyone thought was possible, even ultimately culminating in Mojang hiring our original core team. Unfortunately, all good things come to an end and the Bukkit project has run its course, leaving me to make one final – incredibly difficult – decision to shut down the project I’ve poured 3 and a half years of my life into which means so much to me. We’re no longer able to confidently distribute our modified versions of the Minecraft server and it is no longer smart for us to continue with our update process. Sadly, this means we will NOT be updating Bukkit nor CraftBukkit for Minecraft 1.8 and, since Minecraft 1.7.10 introduced the EULA enforcement, we will be placing the project under a code freeze for the foreseeable future. Furthermore, due to obvious legal reasons we will not be helping anyone else complete any updates nor sharing our methods despite any desire to the contrary. Although the project itself will essentially be no more, we’ll continue to support our community, the forums, IRC and BukkitDev as long as we are able and as long as our partners support us with the resources and infrastructure to do so.

From what I could gather, there was some miscommunication or misunderstanding with regards to to the EULA which EvilSeph was not happy with.  It didn’t take long for Mojang to step in though, with Jens Bergensten (one of the Minecraft developers) sending out the following tweets:

Warren over at bukkit seems to have forgotten that the project was bought by Mojang over two years ago, and isn’t his to discontinue — Jens Bergensten (@jeb_) August 21, 2014

That means bukkit always had a special relationship in regards to things such as the EULA, and if Warren is bored, we need to do something — Jens Bergensten (@jeb_) August 21, 2014

So Mojang actually own Bukkit? Yeah, it looks like EvilSeph raised some sort of false alarm for nothing. While typing this piece, the forum post has since been struck through entirely, with the bottom saying:

Lastly, over at Planet Minecraft, a user named TraedpoD has pieced everything together. He believes that EvilSeph may just be stepping down as the lead of Bukkit. That might have been a good assumption, if Seph hadn’t recently tweeted the following:

Yes, Mojang does own Bukkit. Them acquiring us was a condition to being hired. If Mojang want to continue Bukkit, I’m all for it 🙂 — EvilSeph (@EvilSeph) August 21, 2014

Alright, so it looks like the whole forum post was for nothing. What was EvilSeph playing at? A cry for attention or just an attempt to highlight the large grey area that is the EULA? Let us know your thoughts below.
