What Witcher 3 learned from Driveclub and why it gives hope for new consoles

Witcher3

The Witcher franchise has always set the standard for PC gaming. With gorgeous games that push PC hardware to its limits, good looks are a big part of the game. That aesthetic doesn’t come cheap, using up a ton of resources on devices – but don’t worry, it will still be impressive on PS4 and Xbox One, and the developers say there’s more to it than that.

First up, the Witcher 3 makes use of a variety of weather patterns. To that end, Driveclub was actually a big influence according to Visual Effects Artist, Jose Teixera.

Aaaaahhhh thunder (now I’m stuck playing AC DC in my head)! Short answer – yes and yes. We do have thunderstorms. The majority of them you’ll see far away, like in real life… however there will be some occasions where you’ll have lightning close to you! But only in some special moments, for added drama.
Driveclub has fantastic weather effects, they were a huge inspiration for us! Again, the ideas for the future keep pouring.

Like Driveclub, the game is shaping up to look gorgeous on new generation consoles. But it’s not just about this game – CD Projekt Red has other games in the pipeline and Teixera is excited about what the future holds:

Consoles, on the other hand, are constants, so we know where the limits are, and it’s up to us to do as much as possible within them. That is a necessary challenge, and one that every gamer greatly benefits from. Take the last generation consoles – compare a game from the first and the last year – it’s the same console, the same “performance limits”, yet the game looks so much better! Let’s think of it this way – The Witcher 3 is coming out in consoles that are about one and a half years old, and it already looks this good!
Based on our experience making this game, the lessons we’ve learned, the ideas we already have to be able to do even more within these same limits… I, for one, am already super excited for the next couple of years.

Things are certainly looking great in The Witcher 3, and if CD Projekt Red applies just a hint of this to its upcoming cyberpunk game, it’s going to be the best thing our gaming eyeballs have ever seen. While the Witcher is much more than just a pretty face, it’s so cool to see just how gorgeous the game will be. It might just set a new standard for games, one which other AAA studios will need to strive for in the future. The coming years of gaming are literally looking good.

You do realise that you’ve effectively spent the whole of Eskom’s maintenance budget on two copies of The Witcher 3?

Nah me and a friend always order CE together. In fact I usually order like 5 copies of blizzard games. It is the reason I had a spare copy of WoD to give away a while back.

Oooh this and the House of Wolves has me covered for the next few months. And then add Fifa to that and I am sorted for at least 5-6 months of gaming. Heaven.
