Fallout 4’s dynamic faction wars allow you to choose who dies

Fallout 4 has synamic faction wars

I’m not the biggest fan of Fallout: New Vegas, but there was one mechanic that the non-numbered sequel introduced that immediately set it apart from its predecessor. Giving players to the power to decide the fates of varying factions roaming the Wasteland was engaging – and it’s something I hoped to see in Fallout 4. Thankfully, Todd Howard and his team have a direct line to my grey matter.

Fallout 4 is going to feature different rivalling factions, such as the roaming Brotherhood of Steel Battalion, the Commonwealth Minutemen and Raiders. During a new showcase behind closed doors at Quakecon, Howard explained how these factions explore the wasteland on their own – engaging in small skirmishes whether the player is involved or not. These little battles happen dynamically, and introduce interesting options for you as a player.

You could, for example, intervene and aid any particular side. This presumably gains their favour, which could open up more story branches, dialogue options or access to loot. It also affects a more encompassing war that the factions are locked within, changing the world around you depending on the stronger side.

Conversely, you could choose to let things play out from a distance and not interact with it at all. Fallout 4 is, of course, an RPG – so giving players this choice rather than forcing an allegiance is really a given at this point. Still, it’s a far more dynamic system than New Vegas (by the sounds of it), and I already know I’m going to struggle to choose between the Commonwealth and The Brotherhood should they ever choose to bash heads.

In other words, November 10th couldn’t come sooner.

  1. Not the biggest fan of New Vegas..meaning you preferred Fallout 3?
I’m a bit divided on this actually. I really loved both. But Fallout 3 had a nicer map for me, it just felt so much more barren and depressing. New Vegas had the nice crafting extras and a few cool missions. 3 was also a bit buggier.

New Vegas was the better game in almost all aspects.
      More polished, more interesting wasteland.
Im not sure why people prefer Fallout 3. Maybe because it held your hand more in the beginning.
      I love both though!

Like I said. I loved F3 for the location. It just felt way more depressing, which it should. New Vegas was definitely more polished, no doubt. I’ve spent way more time on New Vegas than I have F3 though.

I agree about 3 being better with atmosphere. Dunwich Building anyone?

Fallout 3 does atmosphere better than New Vegas ever could hope. That’s why Fallout 3 is better. Obsidian pulls this “upgrade”shit all the time. They get handed tech and rules, install a handful of mods and have JE Sawyer inject his bloated ego into it. They did it with KOTOR, they did it with Baldur’s gate and they did it with Fallout.
Yet all Obsidian games suffer the same flaw, poor world design. If you get down to brass tacks it’s actually New Vegas that does theost hand-holding, beating the player over the head with a ham-fisted, sausage-elbowed story, failing totally to have a meaningful world to explore and discover on your own terms.

And what the fuck is this about New Vegas being more polished? Fallout 3 never wiped my saves, but New Vegas did three times before I figured out it was the fucking Novac delivery box doing it. NV only had more features, it wasn’t more polished, it was woefully under polished at launch.

I will say that Dead Money was a sublime expansion, best part of the NV journey. Everyone hates Dead Money for some reason though, maybe The headpop collars are too much?

I played on Xbox 360 and New Vegas was better to play, seemed more polished, but Fallout 3 world was just better, more memorable

Word. Then the fanbois that are too young to remember the release of Fallout or FO2 queue up for the “New Vegas was more true to the originals” sob-fest, when in fact it totally isn’t like the originals at ALL, and these kids never played them, so how would they know?

The only thing New Vegas has in common with Fallout is bugs, and the NCR.

So New Vegas was the better game then for sure? And you don’t understand why FO3 got beter reviews and a better MetaCritic rating, and better sales? Or did you mean “I liked New Vegas better”…which would be more accurate. Those (many) people who preferred FO3 aren’t wrong just because you reached a different conclsion.

Yeah basically. I think they’re both great games, but New Vegas just felt a lot less memorable. Especially it’s wasted potential on the setting.

Knowing my luck, I will wander into one of those dynamic skirmishes, shoot at both sides and have both sides hating me equal. Oh to be me!

I will kill members of all of them, thus creating a common enemy of me. Through me their petty differences will be resolved and the wasteland will see peace.

Wouldn’t it be cool if you could go and kill one of the faction guys… Steal his clothing and wear it, Run to another faction and kill their people in broad daylight but they go for the faction you were wearing. Starting wars without any bother at all.

When you crack the sky, scrapers fill the air.
Will you keep on building higher
’til there’s no more room up there?
Will you make us laugh, will you make us cry?
Will you tell us when to live, will you tell us when to die?

    I know we’ve come a long way,
    We’re changing day to day,
But tell me, where do the children play?

Yeah, was not specifically thinking of that. Hmm. Thanks. Yeah. Great 🙂

Essentially, I think the lyrics match Fallout very well.
