New Prince of Persia teased

Yesterday, when we told you about Ubisoft’s biggest franchises, many of you expressed a yearning for a new Prince of Persia. That may well be coming soon; Drew James, a Ubisoft engineer teased about the future of the prince on Twitter. He may have said something he wasn’t supposed to though – because his tweet was summarily pulled. The internet, however, never forgets.

The tweet, of course, was saved for posterity.

It doesn’t give away very much, but it does suggest that Ubisoft is actively busy with a new Prince of Persia. Interestingly, rumours from last week suggest something similar – only that the next game will go back to the series roots a bit, by being a 2D platformer. A report on French website Portail du Jeu Video claims that the new Prince of Persia will be built using the UbiArt Framework that powers Rayman Origins, Legends and Child of Light.

The engine allows for all of the prince’s composite parts – legs, head, torso and arms – to be animated separately which will give the game some pretty lifelike animation. I’m okay with that. I’m not sure it’d really be possible for Ubisoft to continue with 3D Prince of Persia games – they’re too similar to Assassin’s Creed to avoid comparison.

Two years ago, a leaked shot that was purported to be Prince of Persia made the rounds, but Ubisoft last year said the franchise was on hold.

Same here. I enjoyed it’s unique approach to not just graphics but gameplay as well.

    1st : slow clap…
2nd : I like the direction in which this is going, I think. Is it really that similar to AC though? The emphasis of PoP have always been to navigate dungeons (ok fine palaces and rooftops as well) with oodles of death traps. Also, I’ve always found the games to have (at times) a strong horror/terror element of sorts. Perhaps not horror exactly, but some of those dungeons and underground locations could be terrifying.
    3d : anyone remember these? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-rZhUkAtlc

I’d love a modern 2D PoP game. I still have fond memories of playing the very first one.
