Capcom’s Darkstalkers is one of those odd franchises. Its inception came about to capitalise on the immense popularity of fighting games in the nineties, but failed to really catch on anywhere other than Asia. It has, however, since become a bit of a cult hit, and many gamers have been waiting patiently for Darkstalkers 4. They could be waiting forever.

Though Capcom’s been teasing it for years now, the future of the Darkstalkers franchise was likely hinged on the success of the HD rerelease compilation, Darkstalkers Resurrection. It’s a really top-shelf project, adding a ton of features to the old games. Unfortunately, it hasn’t quite done as well as Capcom had hoped – and it could well put the series future in jeopardy.

"We’re working on promotions and the like to improve the situation. We’ve not given up. But I’m disappointed in the opening sales response relative to any other fighting title we’ve put out on the same platforms given the frequency and urgency of requests we’ve had here over the last several years and the quality of the execution,” says Capcom’s Christian Svensson. “It is the most fully featured and probably best project of this type we’ve done.

"And before people jump to the wrong conclusions, I’m not blaming fans who did buy it and supported the brand. I’m very thankful for those guys (thank you, to all of you). I’m more disappointed by my misread of the information in this particular case."

This all comes after Capcom’s said it’ll be slowing down on digital re-releases – though it does have a compendium rerelease of its excellent fantasy brawler Dungeons and Dragons coming soon.

If you were hoping Darkstalkers would be given new life, much in the way that Capcom has revitalised Street Fighter and Marvel vs Capcom, you’re probably in for a dose of disappointment. If you have even a remote interest in fighting games, you should probably take a look at Darkstalkers Resurrection, which is available right now on the Sony Entertainment Network and Xbox Live Arcade.

Or just have an appreciation for a decent fighting game and a love of classic horror movie monster tropes. Look beyond Felicia to the rest of the cast.

“hinged on the success of the HD rerelease compilation, Darkstalkers Resurrection” – peoples want new stuffs. They do not want CoD style “visual upgrades” and little extra do-dads. They want a brand spanking new thing! I for one have stopped purchasing rehashed/repolished games!
