Not long ago, 2K Games hushed up all the media pertaining to the XCOM first person shooter, by making all the YouTube videos private, and killing the game’s site. And then yesterday, Darryn received a strange package (well, stranger than the other packages he receives, and I’m led to believe he *ahem* receives…*ahem*…packages all the time), pretty much convincing us that the XCOM FPS was set to make a grand return. 2K Games has now confirmed our suspicions.
“The XCOM universe is expanding,” 2K says in a blog post titled “2K Marin’s [redacted] is coming soon”
“In the coming days the world will get a fresh look at the long-awaited squad-based tactical shooter in development at 2K Marin. Announced back in 2010, the game has undergone an evolution since we last showed it to you at E3 2011. Firaxis’ critically acclaimed turn-based strategy title, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, has reignited the classic franchise and we feel that the time is right to deliver a new experience within the world of XCOM.
The creative development of this game has been a collaborative process of discovery and iteration. 2K’s culture allows our studios the freedom to refine their visions, to explore new ideas, and to deliver the best possible experiences for players. Through this exploration, 2K Marin has refined their vision, and as a result the game has evolved into a high-stakes narrative experience imbued with core XCOM concepts.
The wait is nearly over and we can’t wait to share more details with you about the game in only a matter of days.”
No word on whether it’ll actually still carry the “XCOM” name, or as looks likely, be a spinoff called “The Bureau.”
I guess we’ll find out soon.

Brilliant game Xcom: enemy unknown…. but it sucks when you lose one of your favourite characters…

Good game, just felt a bit short and too linearly scripted. Still good fun…and I only lost a few rookies. I got the achievement of one guy doing ALL my missions on my second play-through while 2 guys only missed one each!

I actually really need to get this game. I have bravely challenged Andre116 to a game, and I need to learn how to play it first, I think. Either way, I’ll turn him into paste… Very interested to see how a FP will re-invent the IP.

The FPS was still being made so they gave us the strat game as filler but the sales showed that we are hungry for something different so they kept the FPS version under the carpet.

Yawn, yawn. Again with the little threats. Just because you think you are some sort of a pro at My Little Pony, doesn’t mean that you would even able to comprehend this game. But go waste your money if you really have to….biiiaaaaatch!

Funny thing is… It was never dead. But apparently that’s not enough for game journalists… So now we have news about a subject that only was speculation since day one…
