World of Warcraft DDOSed for expansion launch

Warlordsofdraenor

Warlords of Draenor has launched. In fact, we might have a fun giveaway for you as a result, so keep an eye out in the coming days. However, the launch hasn’t been easy for Blizzard as people tried to attack them when they were most vulnerable.

Community manager Micah “Bashiok” Whiple wrote on the Warcraft forums an apology and explanation of why the experience hasn’t been ideal for people as Warlords of Draenor launched:

Europe was our first region to launch, and we encountered a few issues due to the sheer number of players attempting to enter Draenor from a single location. We worked to add multiple new ways to access Draenor, and this helped ease some of the initial rush into the new expansion as players were able to access it from their capital cities, as well as from the shrines in Pandaria.

While that solution helped a ton for our North American launch, we ran into a few other issues, including a distributed denial of service attack, that resulted in increased latency.

What a shame for WoW. It still hasn’t dampened their success, with more people playing since the latest update than they’ve seen in years. However, I really don’t understand why people do this. What is the point of a DDOS? To prove it can be done? There was no claim, no demand, just random acts of irritation.

Here’s hoping that Warlords of Draenor isn’t brought down by the experience. Hopefully, all the WoW fans out there will be able to play all weekend. And can we please just tell everyone to stop with these stupid hacks and DDOSes?

I think a few people have something against Blizz as they get DDOS’d REALLY often, and it affects ALL their games. Nothing worse than a lag spike in a dungeon at a boss, or a rift at the guardian.

What I don’t get is why even bother with a DDoS? The hordes (haha) of WoW players all trying to log in at the same time ammount to the same damn thing as a DDoS anyway. I mean, the first week of a WoW expansion is always a bloody nightmare of queues and disconnects, I’m surprised they’d even *notice* a deliberate attack.

I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if they are using the DDoS excuse due to their infrastructure not being able to handle the load.

Let me guess in a week the DDoS threat will be resolved once they upgraded infrastructure.

Yeah I also think the DDoS thing is just an excuse. The thing is this morning I could play no problem, as soon as the kiddies got home from school the servers started lagging and everything just crashed.

Whoever are doing these DDOS attacks better beware of the nerd rage, they would be ripped to shreds if found!
