Earlier this year Colleen Lachowicz, the Democratic candidate for district 25 of the Maine State Senate was targeted, publicly ridiculed and abused for being a gamer by her opponents in an effort to make her campaign fail. This however has backfired, as Lachowicz now won the election with some help from some awesome gamers and probably because she’s damn good at her job too. SUCK IT NONBELIEVERS!

I was rather appalled when Lachowicz’s Republican opponents started a smear campaign against this World of Warcraft playing lady, taking her hobby and using what she said as a gamer against her. They launched a website called “Colleen’s World” dedicated to her WoW character and outlining everything she said that they thought would put her in a bad light.

“In Colleen’s fantasy world, she gets away with crude, vicious and violent comments,” the site says. “Maine needs a State Senator that lives in the real world, not in Colleen’s fantasy world.”

Not long after the site went live, a group calling themselves “Friends of Santiaga” set up an account on fundraising site ActBlue and drew in over $6300 in donations from gamers across the states.

Colleen Lachowicz, a State Senate candidate in the state of Maineis under attack for playing World of Warcraft. The Maine Republican Party just sent a mail piece to every house in her district with a picture of her 85th level Orc Rogue, attacking her for spending time in a “make-believe world.” Says their page.

Arcane elections laws states that the money couldn’t go directly to Lachowicz’ campaign, but had to be donated to two political action committees dedicated to get her elected instead. This led to the Maine Republican Party to file an official complaint with the state ethics commission, accusing her of illegally encouraging visitors to her site to contribute to the ActBlue campaign. Long story short: The ethics commission unanimously ruled in favour of Lachowicz, voting 5-0 to decline an investigation into the case.

Five days down the road she won the election, celebrating with a link to the Final fantasy IV “Victory Fanfare”.

Here’s to gamers kicking ass!
