Last generation, the Xbox 360 with its easier to program architecture ended up being the primary development platform for most multiplatform games. It meant that Xbox 360 games looked a little better than their PlayStation 3 counterparts. for much of the last gen, it made a lot of sense. The 360 dominated in the first half of the cycle and its player-base was the largest. Tables look to be turning this time around.
According to the rumour mill, Sony’s console is set to become the dominant development platform for multiplatform games – even usurping the Xbox platform’s throne when it comes to Call of Duty development; a series that’s traditionally been tied to Microsoft’s console.
According to serial inside-information leak specialist Pete Dodd – known on the internet as FamousMortimer – Activision’s switching to the PS4 as the lead platform on future Call of Duty titles.
“I’m not ready to jump on the XB1 is doomed train yet. Titanfall, or really any game, can turn the fortunes, but as of now – yes, good start but valid concerns. The PS4 is above and beyond all projections and publishers are re-calibrating to this. I heard that activision is going to make a public announcement about COD changing to the PS4 as lead platform. I have no idea if this means DLC (I assume MS locked that down for multiple years) but COD was a XBOX 360 game that happened to be on the ps3 last gen. That will be a hugely symbolic move… and don’t discount what that means to the masses, “ he said on internet gaming stomping ground NeoGAF.
That the PlayStation 4 has performed beyond expectation certainly seems true. Right now, it’s ahead of the Xbox One even in that system’s North American stronghold. Europe, which has traditionally been Sony territory seems to have embraced the PS4, largely turning away from the Xbox platform, which last generation grabbed a significant slice of the gaming market share.
In Germany, for example – which got the Xbox One on time, I might add – not a single Xbox One game has sold more than 100 000 copies. Not even FIFA. Reports say the PS4 version of the football simulator has sold in excess of 200 000 copies.
Could developers be switching allegiances towards the PlayStation 4? It’s becoming increasingly likely. Activision’s been showing off bungie’s new shooter Destiny almost exclusively on the PS4. It’s come to light that EA – much like the rest of the industry – expected the Xbox One to dominate which is one the reasons for Titanfall’s exclusivity. Respawn has since said its future endeavours wouldn’t be bound to any single platform.
What difference does any of this make to you as the consumer? Honestly, very little – but it’s worth remembering that games tend to perform better on the systems they’re primarily designed to run on. I’m also still not quite on board the “Xbox One is doomed” ship just yet – but I certainly do think that Microsoft has got far, far more to prove to get the masses back on its side.

As much as I’ve argued for pc’s awesomeness over the last few weeks, I think its really sad that the cost of consoles – including the games – is so high this generation. I think consoles have a lot to offer, but they’re just not worth the money any more.
Also, dig the new avatar.
TiMsTeR1033
March 19, 2014 at 11:58
Yeah it is sad but true. I mean sure I can afford to get a PS4 after some time but will I even be able to purchase more than 2 or 3 full price titles a year. I would have to only buy preplayed or if a classics comes out for ps4 games.
Thanks been playing around with avatars lol
Alien Emperor Trevor
March 19, 2014 at 11:59
It’s still worth it if you’re prepared to wait for the games to come down in price. But if you can’t, dan moet jy maar kak en betaal.
I think the worst thing they’ve done is remove most of what really differentiated a console from a PC, which is ease of use.
TiMsTeR1033
March 19, 2014 at 12:01
They still easy to use.. Just now gotta install games, but I see what you saying. No longer simply put in and play, but as with everything people must evolve with the technology.
Alien Emperor Trevor
March 19, 2014 at 12:04
But that’s not evolution. That’s putting back all the “features” people used to complain about when using a PC like installing, updating, patching, etc. Removing those things was the real (r)evolution.
ToshZA
March 19, 2014 at 12:07
The only things PC’s still have that’s more technical than a console is the choice of hardware and the ability to manually change and upgrade it.
TiMsTeR1033
March 19, 2014 at 12:10
Yes patching games on console is not cool, hated doing it on Xbox 360, but updates are a good thing to have even know they can be annoying. In a perfect world the PS4 would be exactly like the PS2 just more powerful, but the catch is having a console online makes it have to “deal” with all the issues that come with it.
ToshZA
March 19, 2014 at 12:02
See, yeah I do agree that the games drop in price over time, but the lowest I’ve seen a console game go is around R200 – which is comparitively fantastic if you don’t include how low the games can get on Steam during their ridiculous sales. Idk, I love my xbox 360 (still do) but I don’t have may games for it, for a reason. Meh. Poor consoles.
As for your 2nd point, 100% agree. I can’t connect my console to the internet for the updates and crap, and beyond that why should I install a frikkin game on my console?!! So sad what they’ve done.

Actually, the correct term would be noticing that the Canadian dollar has slid in valuation against the American dollar, and that American’s were buying PS4’s from Canada (At $360) and selling them for profit in America (At $400).

MS is behind in market share, so they are taking the further 15% loss.
Probably affect any price cuts in the future.
Brian Murphy
March 19, 2014 at 18:09
Canadian dollar has fallen in valuation, American’s were buying the PS4 in Canada for the equivalent of $360 American, and selling them for profit in the US.
TiMsTeR1033
March 19, 2014 at 11:56
I certainly think that the PS4 will win this Console War hands down. Xbone will have some great games but will slowly fall away and live in the shadow the Ps4 casts. Overall I see PC gaming seeing a boom in number of people joining the Master Race for the sole reason prices of Next gen games are becoming so expensive and for the price of 1 Ps4 game one can get a host of games via steam.
ToshZA
March 19, 2014 at 12:05
Do you also think the Steam Machine will have an impact on the transition to more pc players? It might be a good first buy for previous console owners who want to move to PC.
TiMsTeR1033
March 19, 2014 at 12:16
I dunno depends. Would be a good stepping stone to make the transition easier. For myself I rather go back to PC. I left Pc Gaming due to costs of upgrading and having 1 new game force you to upgrade unless you prepared to play on sub par Graphics, but with the cost of R800 or more a game I could rather save up that cash and put towards building better pc and buying through steam being most affordable.
ToshZA
March 19, 2014 at 12:21
Yeah, for you it makes sense just to get a new PC. You’re no stranger to hardware configurations. But the average console gamer would probably be lost in all the choice, and I’ve seen some sales people give some terrible advice, purely from lack of knowledge on their side. Steam Machine will remove both of those factors for people who know nothing about building a pc.
Also, something I think needs to be mentioned – if you’re on capped internet, Steam’s cost should also include bandwidth for downloading games as well. This is one of those hidden costs that nobody thinks about. If you’re on uncapped it means nothing, but capped – yeah it matters.
Alien Emperor Trevor
March 19, 2014 at 12:25
I think the idea of Steam machines is good, but the current implementation is bad, and won’t encourage many people to use one.
ToshZA
March 19, 2014 at 12:28
Well as a pc user for now 20-something years (386 was my first beauty) I think its stupid for me. I’d never buy one, not now, not ever. Not in any iteration. But from a console gamer’s perspective – one who’s not used a PC before. One who doesn’t know how to put a gaming rig together, one who doesn’t realise that an i3 with a GT640 isn’t going to get you great results. I think the Steam Machine might be a good buy. The only important thing to them is “Can it play the games?”
CAE9872
March 19, 2014 at 17:31
Sure won’t encourage me – too many options! Sounds like a PC if you ask me – and I don’t like choice in my gaming! Narrow the parameters, make it have some level of “default” and we can talk further.
Right now – no chance for me.
