Why do so many people want new IP’s to fail?

4 min read

There seems to be a new theme doing the rounds in the gaming community at the moment and that is that there is a large, and vocal, crowd of people who appear to just want new IP’s to fail.

For years we screamed out that we want the industry to be more original, try new things and bring us something new and exciting, and for years the industry ignored us and made billions just repeating the same game over and over again. However with the arrival of a new generation a few publishers have taken the plunge and piled money into some brand new IP’s and without fail every single one of them has been preceded by a tsunami of articles and forum posts predicting and even hoping for failure.

The most recently released title which suffered, and is suffering, through this is Destiny. The game is not perfect by any stretch but its shooting mechanics, public world events, raids and strikes are all fantastic and with the game laying out an expansive world there really is time for it to perfect the story and loot grinding.

Yes it could have been better but the amount of hate we see for this game is mind-boggling.

And now we have Sunset Overdrive, a free-roaming sandbox shooter with a crazy storyline, artistic layout and insane characters. Only a few people in the world have actually had more than a few hours with the game and yet forums like Neogaf are choc full of people saying how it sucks.

I mean look at this comment (emphasis mine)

That’s not the worst of it.

Rumour has it that MS are in salvage mode with this project. Focus testing, now backed up by early reviews is painting a very negative picture of the game. Claims of repetitive, dull, lacking in polish, lacking in appeal, inconsistent, lacks direction are often heard in hushed tones when Sunset Overdrive is mentioned.

MS have distanced themselves completely from Insomniac, their only interest now is to try and recoup the money they invested into development as well as money for their contractual obligation to market the game.

It’s not all one sided, Insomniac are apparently very distraught of having backed the wrong horse with the Xbox One. They were hoping for a five million seller, but with the Xbox One install base in dire straits and the market’s complete rejection of the Xbox brand, well, you get the picture.

That’s why Insomniac allowed Sony to use the font for their recent sale. It was a reconciliatory measure to get back in Sony’s good graces, so they’d allow them to make more games after the Ratchet and Clank reboot.

It’s pretty much a disaster from any perspective. Insomniac weeping, MS ruing, critical backlash, market on course to reject the IP.

It’s perhaps the biggest disaster we’ll see in gaming, rivalling that of ET. There will be documentaries about this game for years to come…

The biggest disaster since ET? This is coming from someone who has no insight into the game and has not played it. The ET disaster was more linked to an industry virtually failing than how awful the game was, but even so this game is nowhere near that bad even if you hate it.

It won’t sink Insomniac and could still well make them a profit – if the angry gaming community doesn’t sink it for no reason.

As for Insomniac allowing Sony to use their font, that shows you how little knowledge is actually behind this comment.

To me this current phenomenon is simply yet another example of the gaming communities self-loathing. We’ve worked for years at being accepted as a normal community and treated as such and as soon as gaming actually hit mainstream we start attacking ourselves.

It reminds me of the nerds in school, they all stuck together and were happy until one of them started being accepted by the cool group. That one then turned on his fellow nerds to show the popular kids how they were like them.

Just stop it people, there is nothing embarrassing about being a gamer. It doesn’t change your social standing one iota or define who you are. I for one hope that Sunset Overdrive sells well over 10 million copies because that would be good for the industry. I also hope Destiny’s story faults and other issues are resolved and it goes on to be one of the most successful IP’s ever introduced. Again because this will be good for the industry.

I LOVE new IPs actually. New ideas, new lore, new everything 😀

Was really sad when Titan got cancelled by Blizzard 🙁

I want sequels on the awesome games (like Witcher), but new games (like Cyberpunk 2077) get me super excited! o/

Cyberpunk is not technically a new IP.

Evolve however is. Also Dying Light.

      Both I want to succeed.

Ah you got me! Dammit… I forgot it wasn’t new. Mainly because I never played the first one.

I am pretty amped for any new game that is written well and coded well. Also Evolve and Dying Light definitely have caught my eye.

Now Fail all you new IP’s fail, in a sense I want Sunset Overdrive to fail on the Xbone so insomniac will release it on the PC.

If it fails they might just abandon it, but if it doesn’t fail then they might think there’s no need to port it to PC.
I honestly can’t decide if it’s better for a console excl*sive to fail or succeed.

You’re actually making quite a point there. I think there are a lot of people that express hate over a new IP just because it’s exclusive or because it’s not coming to their platform of choice. In a way, I understand the anger, but there have always been games that aren’t available everywhere, you just picked something else.

It is part of who we as a race have become and it is getting worse and worse by the day!! I say give a guy credit for what he did, even if it isn’t 100% it still took long hours and a lot of money to try something!! If you don’t like it then good on you, but there will be people who does and they aren’t wrong!!

You really can’t use Destiny as the benchmark here.

I will let you in on a little well known secret. The MMO gamer wants every other MMO that they are not playing to fail. The reason is psychological. I spent years of my life playing WoW and I don’t want my friends to switch to another game forcing me to switch as well. That would make all that time I played WoW a complete and utter waste. At least that is the mentality I noticed in many MMO players. As for single player games most people want stuff like Alien Isolation to be a success but things like Aliens: Colonial Marines make it difficult to believe in. OH wait that’s not really a new IP. Uhm … new IP new IP ah got it. Who wants Evolve to fail? Not many people.

tl;dr I have no idea what I am talking about.

I honestly can’t understand any of this. Things are insane at the moment with GG and everything else going on. People boycotting games because its 30fps….God, when did we fall so far? Personally, I’m kinda sick of it all. I’ve found my Zen recently by disconnecting myself from all the toxic. The gaming communities out there that are causing all of this are destroying the one thing I really love. Right now, all I want to do is play a game, and enjoy it. I hardly dabble in gaming conversations anymore because it will either be ruined by fanboyism, inability to accept different opinions, factions(Yes, factions, we all know they exist. PC VS Consoles etc) and now Gamergate issues as well. Fok….People are horrible.

Hit the nail on the head there buddy. If you look at the production houses implicated in GG and the new IP’s that are being bashed you will see correlation. Since “free” press are not interested in tackling the GG issue, the gamers are speaking by wrecking the corps fronting GG and their corrupt money grabbing ways. I’d go so far as to speculate that the BF4 lawsuit was bought also. If any listed company had to straight up lie about their return on investment they would loose the suit, yet magically EA get off scot free with costs. I say down with big gaming. Rise Indies rise.

Because if they can’t show loyalty to their customers by giving them what is meant to be in the game in the first place, then how can they expect loyalty from their customers?

That’s not the Devs fault though.

I mean, between submitting the game for licensing and actual release there’s a 6 to 8 week window. The Devs need to stay busy, so the best way is to have them work on DLC.

Day one DLC is fine, but When it’s ON the freaking Disc, that’s where the problem creeps in… at leastm that’s my 2c….

I can’t support day one DLC. And for people who buy on Steam it technically IS on the “disc”, since you download it with the game on day one, it just activates when you buy it.
Things were never like this before and it worked perfectly fine. It completely puts me off a game. If they bring some big DLC out that they thought would add value to the game along the line, it’s great, but don’t lock things so you can sell it back to me.
I do understand that it’s not the dev’s fault though, you’ve got a point there.

Herd mentality in action methinks,w e love hearing bad news, however, I do think Gaming Journalism has to accept at least some of the responsibility for this societal meme.

People love reading about drama and failure, hence journalists prioritize this in their reporting. In the case of Sunset Overdrive, only a few journalists had played the game, out of that, some “reckoned” the thing could be repetitive and dull. From that, users following that journalist adopted that same negative view and then exaggerated and over-extrapolated that negativity and then that is the overall view people can extract from the gaming society as a whole.

But I do also think that our ears are more attuned to negative news, so that’s all we end up hearing when listening to society as a whole. I mean thousands of people love and play BF4 and Destiny, but listen to opinions of the game and you’d think these games were broken unplayable messes, which is not the case.

I love to play new IP games. But I will not stand for these new games of today going online only.

Destiny had Bungie fans behind it. I wanted Bungie to do well with Destiny but Destiny didn’t deliver. It’s as simple as that. And now that we know Bungie is over goin gto be doing Destiny games for the next 10 years. Yeah. Fuck Bungie and it’s Destiny. Bungie, single player story driven game, offline with no DRM. But no Bungie wanted to hate and they deserve the hate.

Sunset Overdrive and Evolve. They not really good story driven type of games. Evolve is online only. Microsoft wanted to turn the Xbox One into an online only DRM machine and now a days games being released with huge updates. So it’s not about hating new IP’s, it’s more about hating Microsoft and the direction they wanting to take games into, online only with massive updates and no decent story driven games.

If you want to speak about new a new IP that will get some love. Bloodborne.

I’ve never really played an MMO that I really got into.
Tried Marvel Online, was terribly boring and repetitive. Tried Neverwinter, fails to connect all the time or just drops. Tried Path of Exile, laggy at the best of times. And tried TESO, which was just a disappointment.

            October 23, 2014 at 16:02

Because it’s just such a hassle. You get an unexpected connection drop and you lose progress (on most anyway). When it’s an SP game it just doesn’t even make sense and then sometimes the games even have lag. Then I lose my shit.

          • Guild

            October 23, 2014 at 18:02

I don’t find it hassle most the time. Most of my games are online anyway. But that is probably just a difference with who the IP is and what your connection is like. But I agree 100% SP to have always online is bullshit. There is no point except to try prevent piracy

It’s funny how those with stable internet and that has been using Steam and other DRM products, can’t fathom those many people with no internet who wants to buy PC games but can’t. You never hear from these sorts of people on the internet because they don’t have internet. But people like that, fuck em. They mean nothing. Their money is worthless. Get with the times. But Telkom says no. Get with the mobile but costs are so high. Oh what to do. But so long as those who use and support internet based DRM are happy.

I know the story of Destiny from start to finish. I know all the planets and how they look. I know all the different type of enemies in the game. I know how the guns shoot. I know the boring dialog in the game. ect.
I’m a big fan of 1st person shooters and I can compare games to one another. Destiny has nothing new to experience worth finding out.

Like the time when I said the driving in Watch dogs sucks and I was asked how I knew if I never played the game. I can see it’s shit from my knowledge of other games.

Don’t assume I don’t know anything about the game just because I haven’t played it.

Evolve on the other hand is trying something ‘new’ or rare at a much higher risk. I don’t care what fails or not. But we can’t simply drop standards because its ‘new’.

I completely agree with you. I don’t mind generic games at all. What I disagree with is that somehow Destiny is a ‘new’ game or taken a lot of risk on it, which in my view is simply not true. It has all the mechanics we are used to from other games. Its a very mature formula packaged into a new ip. I can’t comment on Sunset Overdrive because I don’t know anything about it.

Evolve with its game mode is something different which few people have encountered in other games. I don’t think a publisher can predict how much people will enjoy it or how long they will play it. Same with games like say Portal.

The Gaming industry has NOT grown up with the original gamer. They are still stuck catering for the teens.

Also feel a lot of hate is created when the corporate BS interferes with the gaming experience, like when a traditionally cross-platform game series switches to an exclusive or when a exclusive gaming series switches platform/consoles or when a big developer buys out a gaming series and milk it for every last drop essentially killing it. People are pissed at Destiny because it’s obvious how only a shadow of the whole game was released. XBOX fanboys are also pissed because how dare Bungie betray them. PS fans are pissed because the same goes for insomniac. So each camp disses the games for no other reason but to be assholes.

Then I think that the established shooter fanbase may feel threatened by Destiny. I mean if COD:AW bombs(unlikely) and Hardlines as well (more likely) then everybody will run back to Destiny. People are loyal to their brand and will fight tooth and nail for it even if there’s issues like with BF4 and in turn they will act toxic to anything different or new.

Maybe people are just tired with the AAA modus operandi? I know I am. It seem’s like I can’t go and buy a game off-the-shelf anymore without having to do a major update, before suffering from DLC/Connectivity issues. Not in this case with Destiny, but there are still studios out there that think they can charge hefty monthly fees for you to play. So you go through that hassle, and then you get something thats not quite as good as the marketing or paid-for reviews led you to believe it would be. That only has to happen a couple of times for people to become very wary about new IP’s and new HYPE – people know not to believe that anymore, and are much for cautious.

Yet the deployment of said concept has gone wrong somewhere… but that doesn’t mean that we should be dissing new IP’s in any way… new IP’s is exactly what the industry needs, constructive criticism is more whats needed… and i think a lot of these “people in the know” have forgotten that…

Probably because we have different expectations for both. When you’ve dropped $60 on a so-called AAA release with a $100 million budget that you’ve been hearing about for months you have high expectations for the game and it’s quality. Indies, for me anyway, are more often than not impulse buys when seeing something that looks interesting – so there’s not really much risk for you & that high level of expectation is not there.

So when the same Big Dev offers us a new IP, we remember how dejected we were previously and reject the new IP even before we play it because we’ve been burned too many times?

“We want innovation!” cry gamers, even though most don’t really know what innovation is beyond being a 4 syllable word, and even that they get wrong because they suck at counting and don’t know what a syllable is.
“Okay, here’s a new IP!” said the publishers & developers.
“We hate it, it’s not like game X that we’ve played to death.” shout the masses.
I assume it’s because they say innovation but mean improvement.

And then of course there’s the flip side – how goddamn overhyped are games these days? Nothing will EVER live up to the insane marketing promises and constant media bombardment. DA:I awesome super amazing strategic combat – it’s bloody real time with pause, nothing really new is it.

It’s not one thing. It’s many things. And everything feeds off the other with every little tit-bit of information, good or bad, being shoved into the vast internet echo chamber which is what you aid too Gavin. How many Sunset Overdrive things has LG posted in the last week? It’s DA:I, it’s Destiny, it’s Witcher 3, it’s GTAV, it’s Titanfall, article after article, building anticipation.

I don’t want any new IP or game to fail. But I’m not surprised when the most negative voices are the loudest, and I’m not surprised that people are negative when a good game doesn’t turn out to be the best game EVAR and then rush off to bitch about it as the worst thing they’ve ever experienced. Because that’s what people do.

You make a good point. Perhaps if games were less “aggressively” marketed as the best next-gen experience that will have your eyes bleeding from joy….

I think gamers are just getting bored of the being presented with the same safe, market-proven, guaranteed-to-sell-10-million-copies games that the shareholders at EA or Activision are looking for. New or old IP has really nothing to do with it other than, perhaps, the hope and expectation that a new IP will bring real innovation and not just a reskin of the same old thing.

Disinterest or pointing out flaws or voicing a concern somehow gets interpreted as wishing death and brimstone on the game and devs.

Sunset Overdrive looks like Tony Hawk with Saints Row weaponry; I have no interest in it and thus its failure or success is irrelevant.

Just like Destiny is another vault hunter game; for now I’m all Borderlands out thanks.

I’m not going to blindly support all games and devs if they do not cater for me THAT will be even WORSE for the industry.

Unfortunately, the mass unwashed of the gaming proletariat have grown up on a diet of franchises, console convenience and sequel-mania. Original ideas are scary, and (in some cases literally) likened to witchcraft.

What we’re left with is a mess of confused vitriol. No one knows what they want but they’re ruddy well going to let you know why they don’t like it!

Nah. People have forgotten what games they used to play when they were younger because everything it rose tinted with nostalgia. They forget that they used to play with ‘characters’ that were made from two blocks and two colours and now when you offer them something like Assassin’s Creed they moan that the protagonist is as 3 dimensional as a reflection.

The more things change the more things stay the same. I have to admit that I have found a new breath of fresh air in this stagnating hobby. Im looking for all those under the radar Japanese games that the West would never understand.

Viva Le Vita. Proves that it does not need annual AAA titles like Uncharted to survive. Just some crazy Japanese Golf, Cooking, Stripping, Cards, Interactive Visual Novels, Ettchi, Manga fighting games to cure that boredom.

I think if you spend 35 years playing the same genre you are GUARANTEED to at some point get bored of it. That is just the case here. You think people who critique art don;t get bored, or people who start a job loving it hate it at some later stage? That is exactly what I think is the reason for people hating on new IPs. There are only so many ideas that can be fresh, and not one of those would be an idea that hasn’t at some stage been touched on, even if only slightly.

Well you do get the pure, outright negative folk who just want anything that doesn’t have a “3” attached to it fail (HL3 CONFIRMED!)

But perhaps, as so many have said, it’s because of gamers have grown up and those are the most vocal? We attach more value to games as a grown person. Spending R500 while in school on a game would have you jumping with excitement because… NEW GAME OMW!!!!!….. Whereas now it’s…. This game better be made of gold or I am gonna be pissed…..

Our mindset on value vs entertainment has changed.

I am one of those who are very sceptical about forking out money for a new AAA title simply because we often get half finished products. But saying that I want new IP’s to fail? I don’t know if it’s quite that.

Heck, I want Splatoon to become a massive thing. I think it’s fun and would be worth my cash if I was a Wii-U player.

The bit I saw of Sunset Overdrive at rAge? It didn’t have me captivated. It honestly didn’t. Should I feel guilty for not caring if Sunset Overdrive makes it or not? No. I shouldn’t. Do I want it to fail outright? No. I can see how it could be very cool to play for many folk. But it’s just not for me.

That being said, the younger generation of gamer isn’t completely innocent here either. It’s not CoD, BF or DoTA. So why should they play it? It’s not realistic enough bla bla bla and whatever current gen gamers go on about.

Make a good new IP with a good narrative that grips me and I am in! I am on it and I will enjoy it. But it’s not fair to say we want to see new IP’s fail simply because we say a game doesn’t grab us.

Sorry, I am not saying you are pointing fingers at anyone Gavin and I get what your article is trying to say but I can’t help but feel part of the article is trying to tell us to stop saying when we don’t like a game and stating we feel it’s repetitive or whatever the case may be when it’s a new IP.

Also I feel most of these “attacks” on new IP’s are from a vocal few.

If the majority are saying a game is crap however… then it probably is?

    Anyway. I think I’ve written enough…..

I wouldn’t read too much into that comment, comments on message boards are a dime a dozen. The one quoted, in particular, talks about Insomniac ‘letting’ Sony use a font that they made freely available for anyone to use, and claims to have an awful lot of detail about a range of stuff no-one is likely to know.

I do agree there’s a lot of hate going around – human tendencies here, I think. We all complain about everything being the same, then we’re threatened by something new and complain about that instead. Driven by poor self confidence in many cases.

As someone who reviewed Destiny with a group of gamers for our channel and website, I can still quite happily say that Destiny is still the biggest failure this year. The trouble is that your asking us to give new IP’s a bigger unfair chance over series that have been going for years. That isn’t fair. If a game in a series or as a new IP doesn’t stand up on its own, it isn’t worth playing, raving about and getting a sequel for.

A perfect example of this is Shadows Of Mordor, a game that’s been overshadowed by other big names in this bankrupting time of the year, (including Destiny,), yet in my books it is the best game this year not to mention the best new IP this year.

New IP’s can succeed but they shouldn’t be following the likes of COD, by recycling bad ideas that have been overused and giving it a new paint job. If a new IP wants to succeed it must be unique, fresh and most importantly, not overhype itself. Overhype can kill a game and it’s down to the publishers to keep this in check.

It would also be nice to be able to play a game without knowing what half of the game looks like already. Aka, todays 16 minute gameplay video of Quantum Break, the leaked details of the latest COD, new sex scenes for Dragon Age: Inquisition. Can we please leave some surprises for gamers when picking up our new titles. We don’t need to know every little detail of game before it comes out. Often for me a couple minutes of a let’s play is enough to give me an idea of whether I want it or not. If not I’ll wait for reviews but there is nothing worse then playing a game that holds no surprises for you due to them all being leaked.
