Who will you meet on Assassin’s Creed Unity side missions?

ACU 3

We learned earlier today a bit more about the story for Assassin’s Creed Unity. However, some of the best experiences in Assassin’s Creed games are found in the side missions – you can meet some interesting characters and go on cool adventures. The new iteration in the franchise is no exception.

In a short history lesson from Ubisoft, Assassin’s Creed historian Maxime Durand explains, “Some of the side missions in the game let you play with characters that are relevant to the French Revolution, but are less linked to the fight between the Assassins and the Templars”. This will involve:

Solving murder mysteries and investigating cults and myths, as well as meeting historical figures that played important roles during the revolution.

So, who will you meet and what will you investigate? Here is a short list of confirmed elements in the game:

  • Dr Guillotin
  • Marquis de Sade
  • Madame Tussaud
  • Antoine Lavoisier
  • The Red Ghost of Tuileries Palace
  • To the Lamp Post!
  • The Cult of Baphomet
  • Eugene Francois Vidocq

Missions will range from helping Vidocq atone for his sins and investigate crime to stringing up nobles using lamp posts. The Chemical Revolution is a mission involving Lavoisier – I wonder if he’ll replace da Vinci as the scientist of the period for this game. I like that there is also investigation into cults and myths – there was so much happening during the French Revolution and I’m glad these side missions will explore the real events that aren’t being woven into the tale of Assassins versus Templars.

How many side missions do you tend to do in Assassin’s Creed games? I usually do a whole bunch of the interesting ones, and skip the random “can you run here really fast” missions. Are you an absolute completionist, or do you just use side missions when you’re tired of doing the main story?

Most of their audience aren’t going to know who those people are. I guess it feels good for this French company to get around to the French history they’ve so longed to tell, but… it’s going to resonate less with the gamers who are used to British and/or American history dominating their hearts and minds.
