Mortal Kombat X is out in April this year, and I’m growing increasingly excited at the prospect of handing Darryn his ass as my vengeful hell-demon avatar sends a chained spear through his sternum and my own childish cries of “GET OVER HERE” gleefully echo the ones from the game. Right now though, we’re engaged in a different battle; we’re fighting over who we think the big bad guy in Mortal Kombat X will be.
We actually know very little about Mortal Kombat X’s story right now. We do know that it won’t be linear, and will in, chronologically, jump around a bit.
“It’s a direct continuation, but the timespan it crosses is 25 years in length,” Boon explained regarding Mortal Kombat X’s storyline. “There are periods that are directly after MK9, then there are periods that are five, ten, 15 and 20 years out. A lot of the events take place 25 years after where we see older versions of the characters, like Cassie Cage and all that. But it does jump around in time; it’s not a linear thing.”
According to Boon, the end boss will be a “surprising” return character.
Darryn’s pretty convinced it’ll be Shinnok. If you’re unaware, Shinnok is the fallen Elder God who served as the big bad boss at the end of the series’ first foray in to 3D, Mortal Kombat 4.His reasoning is pretty sound. Mortal Kombat 9 was a ret-conned retelling of the first 3 Mortal Kombat games – with the obvious conclusion being that this next game, which follows on, will move to Mortal Kombat 4. He’s forgetting though, that Raiden changed the history. There is of course, this bit of the ending that more than just suggests we’ll be seeing the Shinnok-devout Brotherhood of the Shadow play a large role – and we already know Quan Chi will be in the game.
Me? I think the end boss will be the series usual protagonist, Liu Kang. Now before you call me crazy, hear me out. At the end of Mortal Kombat 9, Liu Kang reckoned Raiden – the usual protector of Earth realm – failed to do his job properly, and challenged his status as a god. He destroyed the lightning god in Mortal Kombat, and was reborn as a fiery god himself. Absolute power, as the cliché goes, corrupts absolutely, and my guess is that Liu Kang – believing he’s doing things for the greater good – actually becomes an evil bastard.
Of course, the big bad this time could be a shunned Raiden instead – but as he was one of the first characters revealed, he’d hardly be “surprising.”
It’s actually not too removed plot wise from the story presented in Injustice; Superman goes a little loco, and delusional superbeing that he is, ends up controlling the entire world. Right now, I’m pretty convinced that that’s what’ll end up happening – and if it does, it’ll have earned me another fifty bucks from Darryn.
Who do you think we’ll come up against as the last boss in Mortal Kombat X? Who would you like it to be?

Well Geoff has me convinced and i can see how they implement it in the game, its similar to the YouTube series, Liu is a type of Anti-Hero in there, it wont surprise me if Shinnok uses Liu for his evil plans, but Liu sure seems pissed about something.

It’s not really appropriate for a fast-paced game like this, watching someone wither to death from pining would take too long. #foreverSP

Could be another deadly alliance between Onaga and Shinnok. Now that Shao Kahn is out of the way its basically a free for all though.

I don’t see Lui being too far fetched, in Legacy he is suggested to be recruited by Shang Tsung.
Shinnok makes a lot more sense but there are other options:
Reiko – in mk4 he dons khans mask… albeit a disappointing boss
Onaga – this can play into resurrecting the dead characters.
Quan – Nah

I’m gonna take a shot in the dark here and say Blaze. Don’t ask me how or why… just think he’s making a comeback.

Blaze would be great to have as a final boss in Mortal Kombat X. His visuals would be unreal. I see it being between Blaze, Onaga or Shinnok.

If you follow the MK story then you would know it is absolutely not Blaze.

I say it’s Shinnok. It could be Havok or Reiko though, which would be kind of cool.

I was thinking Reiko as he is a self – proclaimed successor to shao kahn.

I am also hoping for Liu Kang, but Raiden killed him in Story Mode when the monk tried to stop the Thunder God from allowing Shao Kahn to cross into Earth Realm, which was needed in order for the Elder Gods to take action against him. So if Liu Kang was in MKX as the final boss, he would be revived as the reboot’s view of what Raiden became in Deception, a dark, vengeful warrior who will kill anyone who endangers Earthrealm.

I still prefer Shao Kahn out of all the bosses in the MK Universe. The Shang Tsung from the very first MK game. To me it just seems Shao Kahn is more of a major last boss than any of the others. The others are good, but Shao Kahn just takes the lead a bit more.

Liu Kang (new evil god), Reiko (general of Kahn’s armies), Shinnok (Fallen elder god). These are the best candidates for a “surprise returning character”. Of course, all three will be heavily reimagined to fit the MK Boss standards.

It will either be Shinnok, Reiko, or Daegon and they’ll be possessed by the Blood God.

They need to give Shinnok his day in the sun. He is one of the beings that Shao Khan was terrified of and why he didn’t take Earthrealm by force. Elder Gods are by nature more powerful than any other species in the MK lore, including dragons (Onaga), and protector gods (Raiden, Fujin, Argus). I say give him his amulet and lets see what an Elder God looks like as a boss. If you’re reading the comics, it’s not entirely out of the question that it is Onaga. The Kamidogu are playing a prominent role so far which implies Onaga but they continuously refer to a “demon” which Onaga has never been referred as such. Daegon is another character mentioned a few times in the comics but that would be far too anticlimactic. Shang Tsung is a “demon sorcerer” but died in MK9. Raiden, Sub Zero, Fox, and several others have already been “possessed” to an extent so it isn’t going to be one of them. It almost certainly has got to be Shinnok based on everything I mentioned. Ed led us to believe otherwise for a reason as in the story traiker we see him sucked into the amulet and then it is referred to as “a talisman with a sentient jewel” which is clearly referring to Shinnok. I believe he will be “beaten” in the intro to the game only to plot and return wielding his amulet near the end of the story of the game. Another moment in the trailer that leads me to believe this is when Raiden says “If this talisman is what I suspect it to be, we may ALL pay a price,” knowing that it contains the fallen Elder God. Food for thought.
