Who was that cheering in the Xbox One press conference

AudienceApplauseBnWSo the Xbox One was revealed last night in a flashy event in Redmond and one thing that was noticeable throughout the event was the spontaneous applause and cheers throughout the event. But was this American exuberance or something more sinister?

The first signs of discontent came when Adam Sessler tweeted the following

The cheering in the audience is not coming from the press…

And instantly the conspiracy theories start their engines and point to canned applause and a faked reception.

Now I’ve been to a bunch of press conferences and I have to say I have never thought it’s a good idea for the media to applaud when covering an event. It appears to take away the unbiased opinion and shows favouritism.

But even saying that I’ve been to a few American press conferences and events and seriously these guys clap at everything and you do get caught up in it. It starts becoming more of a show than a press event and it’s a really fun experience. Which is why we try to avoid covering any events from the actual location. It’s easy to get swept up in the excitement with all the glitz and glamour but being forced to sit in a small unlit room back at home base covering the facts gives you a different perspective.

Also let’s not forget that the tent was filled with a lot more than simply media. There would be the Microsoft execs, important partners, retailers, friends of the dude with the hair. In fact I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if the majority of the audience has some part of their career on the line with the Xbox One. Of course you would clap then wouldn’t you?

So in essence, there is no story here. Adam Sessler may not have clapped and the media around him may have remained silent but the awkward moments last night when Mattick expected applause and it didn’t arrive prove that the applause wasn’t canned.

Kotaku didn’t set the trend. They all were there (Journos) and all agree that the reveal was a little lackluster. Even Lazygamer said it should have been a much better reveal.

They missed out on having that real WOAH factor they usually have. It doesn’t mean the product is bad, it simply means MS slipped up on their release. A little bit of a PR mishap so to speak.

But everyone now thinks they are all claiming the device is crap. This is not the case.
No one can tell for sure yet until the devices are shown in action properly.

Everyone is simply trying to point out that they are bummed that MS didn’t put a little more effort in to the release.

Agreed, I noted that failed ‘clap here’ it was bloody awkward and had there been canned clapping, cheers, surely that would have been placed in there.

I’m actually a big fan of Adam Sessler. He’s been around since about 1998 if I’m correct, and he talks a lot of sense. He is like the boss on the Revision 3 and Rev3 Games channel on Youtube. It’s one of the few ‘Merican channels/ sites that really seems unbiased for me. And damn they’re entertaining.

I watched the reveal through their channel last night and their banter before and after was better then the actual reveal.
