What happened at Saturday's COD: Ghosts LAN tournament?

Last week, I told you about a COD: Ghosts LAN tournament to take place on Saturday. We were unable to attend and report back to you because of our amazingly fun community get together (yes, I’m organizing another one, don’t worry). I received the results from them today, including a dodgy press release.

Gavin has told you before about the glory of the MSSA press releases – that’s where we had the joy of “Ape Town” – and it appears that Afrihost and Ivents were determined to do way better. However, this still has to be one of the most awkwardly worded press releases I’ve read in a long time:

Once the players were accorded their time to setup and greet and cajole with their friends and competitors and put their additional togs in a secure room, the spectators were permitted entry. They immediately went to greet their friends and players whom they wanted to see and meet in person.

[…] Overall the local teams were treated to an awesome display of lan, which is more common place in the Western Cape for this Console and game.

[…] Team Adept had their metal tested

Okay, so the press release isn’t great, but let’s not judge the event based solely on that – it appears that for the most part the tournament went well and the prizes were certainly worthwhile:

  • First, second and third places: prizes from Afrihost of R10 000, R6 000 and R4 000 respectively
  • First, second, third and fourth placed teams: four Afrihost mifi devices per team, each mifi device with 50GB data bundles
  • First, second, and third place: BarkieUK sponsored return air tickets to the next tournament
  • First, second, third and fourth placed teams: four Microsoft gift cards per team compliments of Evopoints

That’s a very nice cash prize! I’m sure the competitors will definitely take part in the next tournament if they think prizes will be comparable. For those who are interested, check out the table to see who came out on top:

Afrihost invitational

All in all, I’m glad to see another player organizing tournaments. It’s important for the eSports scene in South Africa, and our local teams need all the opportunities (and prizes) that they can get. Hopefully we can see bigger and better events from them in the future.

They even have a mountain to play on and have a sea to wash in when they played with too much poo. There are even ones who eat too much amarula fruit and sour grapes they live high in the mountains and they known as “Bergies”

No that is Monkey Village, 54 Sauer Street Johannesburg.

Ape Town, is populated by their slightly more intelligent cousins on the 2nd floor of Theba Hosken House on the corner of Breda and Mill street in Cape Town.

The “Master” in Master race is pretty much the same as Masters of the universe. We had huge men with swords on tigers fighting them off. Also if you don’t get the reference I weep for you.

It’s nice that they got some time to cajole. Not nearly enough cajoling going on. What were the results of the metal testing? Did anyone have dangerous levels of mercury or lead?

FPS competitions on console is like asking Ryk Neetling to swim in a pool of mud.
I’ll never support it no matter how much cash is involved.

I need some opinions for online gaming and streaming.. I am on the Mweb 2mb Premium at the moment using about 130gb a month. But my line is inconsistent the last couple of weeks. How are your experiences with Afrihost? Anybody on their 4mb line? Or even Telkom? How bad is the throttling?

People say Afrihost is good.. I had good experience with Telkom too, but currently there is something wrong on their network.. On my 4mb account, I was never throttled and my usages were usually 200GB..
