I’d say yes, but then I’ll be fast asleep by then. Also, I hate it when they drag these things out and while you’re chewing your fingernails, they’re still happily torturing you with the “remember when” videos. I’d rather just get the facts during the day from reputable news sources….

It seems like they kept some cards close to their chest. Didn’t see the console unveiled. We know it exists, we saw the controller. We know PS Move isn’t dead, We also know now that it’s definitely coming November THIS YEAR, but more importantly a few unexpected additions – Bungie and Blizzard? Who would have thought? Bungie… Destiny… PS4… pinch me now….

Also, I’m amazed that EA didn’t reveal Battlefield 4…

(Yeah, Lag was pretty bad at the end, and I missed Shinji’s presentation. Will see if it’s better on the repeat broadcast. Should be, with the ability to buffer…)

Yeah they definitely didn’t show everything, that’s for sure. But what I’ve seen thus far is massively impressive. I dare say that Sony not only learned the lessons from the PS3, but acted on virtually every single one of them in the design process of the PS4 (and more). Developers genuinely seemed enthusiastic about it.

It’s very intriguing that EA wasn’t there, though, it might be because Activision was, they’re like Fire and Ice, afterall.

Yeah I’ll rewatch the presentation to ensure I caught everything and post any additional details that I missed. Hope this helped those of you in SA who were watching/trying to watch. Even here in the States the stream was unwatchable at times….many an expletive was uttered in the past couple hours.

I’ve been thinking, and maybe this is just me dreaming for more, but…with Microsoft set to talk about their machine at some point soon. What’re the odds that Sony saved it’s biggest announcements for shortly after Microsoft’s reveal? How much thunder do you think they could steal, if they announce GT6, or a new Uncharted, or that long awaited FF Game…or the last guardian, or hell, a FFVII Remake, shortly after Microsoft’s announcement lol.

Or more likely that they hold onto it until one of the games shows coming up later this year. Either way, it’s going to be fun watching Microsoft and Sony unleash their best.

PC architecture and PC GPU. Sweet. So it’s pretty much a streamlined PC now that’s dedicated to gaming.

But why the x86 architecture? Why not move away from 32-bit and move to 64-bit? Surely if it’s using an enhanced PC architecture it wouldn’t have been impossible to do?

Lol I know. Just curios. Especially since 32-bit architexture can only address 4GB of RAM at any giving time (2^32 = 4GB)

I know the memory address can simply be swopped out when needed but as far I know this is a pretty redundant way of memory handling.

It’s like owning 50 cars but only having a 4 car garage. The rest you would need to store offsite. Makes it a bit complex to handle.

Same then goes for developers who need to code their games to do this kind of memory handling. That or most devs are just going to make sure their games don’t need more than 4GB at any given time (in theory)

Well, at least Sony has shot down the rumor of 2nd hand sales being restricted. At least there’s some control they haven’t exerted. It’s not all doom and gloom my friend, at least the new crop of hardware is bringing consoles to current standards, so the industry can start moving forward again.

This is why Im disgruntled about the new PS4 and 720

            http://www.digitallydownloaded.net/2013/02/the-playstation-4-is-incredible-but-are.html

the real power behind this console will reside on Sony’s own servers,
rather than the box people will buy (though there is a power increase
            there too, of course).

They have total control. Im old school. I want the brick next to the TV to be all end all. Give me games that are COMPLETE, FIXED and invisioned 100%.

Not going to happen anymore 🙁 Its all a service provider now.

It’s pointless, man. They have no arguments, but they will defend this new thing as if it’s the best thing in the world.

          • mornelithe

            February 21, 2013 at 11:37

No, Mathias, in this particular case OVG has not actually provided me with anything to argue with. He says they have full control, yet clearly they do not, since they shot down the rumor of denying 2nd hand games to function (total control, would be denial of 2nd hand games. The lack of that, means, not Total). So, the burden then rests upon him to provide ME with an argument, worthy of actually responding to with serious thought and logic. This isn’t a war, we’re not throwing down, we’re discussing an announcement that occurred last night. We’re truly sorry if gaming related discussions bother you, then again, you’re probably on the wrong site to be pissing and moaning about it.

Nobody here, in any of the comments posted on ANY of the PS4 topics since last nights show, has said ‘It’s the best in the world’, I know, I’ve read them all, and responded to most. I said it looks beast, there’s an extra vowel in there. You know, the letter A, it actually changes the meaning of the entire word, and sentence for that matter.

So, tell me exactly, where total (but not quite total) control has been taken. Exactly how, does what we currently know about the PS4 denote Sony taking control over you? What further lengths have they gone to, to increase control?

I’m really sorry that broadband in some countries sucks, hell, once upon a time, broadband wasn’t available here either. The US Government, however, contracted with telecommunications companies to provide broadband to as many, as fast as they could. So, who’s really to blame here? Sony, or your Governments?

And if it’s as simple as you not wanting the internet, what the hell are you doing on the internet?

          • Mathias

            February 21, 2013 at 12:46

Dude, I already know what YOU think about it, because I think you and Banana Jim (even if in this case we didn’t even argue) are the only ones that at least reply and try to start or keep a discussion going, without only downvoting like children. Even if I still think it was a stupid, dull conference, I respect that you liked it, because at least you’re telling me why. I’m not talking about you.

Besides, who told console devs that gamers need to be SO FUCKiNG SOCIAL? I find it stupid and a waste of time and resources. Put a party system on it to talk with your friends and that’s it. But, no, they have to give me the great opportunity for everyone to see how Im fucking up in a game live. Or even better, imagine how many new YT channels will be created now that everyone will be able to upload their CoD or whatever game’s finest moments. Sorry not to find that compelling.

          • mornelithe

            February 21, 2013 at 12:57

Sorry Mathias, some of that was directed at you, and some at OVG, as I simply found his response odd…and his lack of clarification well…not like him.

Ok, look, I know it’s hard for us to understand (us being people who couldn’t give a flying fuck about social networking…I still don’t have a Facebook or Twitter account), but we aren’t the only 3 people on the planet. There actually are people out there who enjoy this kind of stuff….and unfortunately, they vastly outnumber us.

The good thing however, is this machine is actually built to play games first (and do it well it would seem), and social functionality second. You don’t need 8g of GDDR5 to peruse Facespace, or Mybook or Twatter… Ya know?

It’s fine that you were underwhelmed, I have to respect that opinion even though I really don’t understand it. I guess I’m confused as to what it is you’re actually looking for in a console. Either way, I hope you find it, if not the PS4, than Durango, or Steam’s thing etc… Tons of options in the pipeline, so at least this isn’t the only game in town.

There are certain examples of videos that I would _keep_ as part of a collection, but no, I wouldn’t post them to youtube, if there was something I did particularly well and wanted to show a friend…sure. But a bunch of total strangers? Kinda presumptuous to think anyone gives a damn lol.

They reason they let the 2nd hand thing slide is because everyone was freaking out, the rest of the console is total control I will list 2 points that makes alarm bells go off.

            1. Cloud Gaming.

            2. Digital only sales.

Both is quite a worry in my eyes due to the fact that ms and sony is already abusing some countries in the world, Australia comes to mind thats got to pay much more for games than any other country. South Africa is going down the router as well with games now releasing for R999 because they “took allot of effort” to produce it. Lets face it they are a corporate out to make money I cant see them playing nice.

I am sure there is allot that they dont mention either and will just be sneaking it in with the console release.

Im a PC gamer and dont give a rats ass for consoles but just quickly reading through some articles and checking some news here and there about the event its quite clear what they aim for. I am sure I will find more problems if I actually look for any but cant be bothered.

          • mornelithe

            February 25, 2013 at 16:29

*rolls eyes* Because there are no digital only sales right now? There’s absolutely no cloud gaming right now, is there? Everything you play on Steam is installed via disc, right? Origin? Blizzard? Gamer’s in general could NEVER have encouraged this, right?

Yes, it’s Sony’s fault, completely. Delivering exactly what’s become more and more popular over the last 7-8 years. It could have absolutely nothing to do with our own personal purchasing choices.

          • OVG

            February 21, 2013 at 13:53

I dont want to burst their bubbles with negativity as my most memorable times were before a console release, but I fucking hate the Internet and social this and social that. Games that are not complete anymore because they can make more money by providing a service rather than shipping a finished product.

Fuck… this gen is bad enough, I placed 80hours into Skyrim then decided to give it another go. I was at a friends and on-line when I placed the disc in, It had an update. The game is totally different, I can see textures and read road signs now, I even have slow mo arrow shots that are spine chillingly bad ass. WHY THE FCUK WAS THAT NOT ON THE GOLD DISC?

Next gen is going to be even worse IF ONE IS NOT ON THE MATRIX.

I understand the ideas, its all great and SONY can do whatever they want now 6 months after the console is released. TOTAL CONTROL. You watched how much this gen changed from year to year. For the better but mostley the worst.

The Golden Age died with the PS2. Im to old for all this PC stuff.

Runs out of room to look at patterns on rugs in Skyrim THAT COULD AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN ON THE DISK 😛

Can’t hate on the internet, and then piss and moan about not having it for your console hehe.

Just a few comments, I’m streaming it via the PS3 (like a boss) while lying in bed. Awesomesauce.

*The DS4 looks awesome. The pictures really didn’t do this thing justice.

*Knack actually looks like a cool little platformer.

    * It really seems like SONY has taken developer responses to the PS3 to heart, and it seems like they’ve really worked with developers (both first party and third party). Very exciting.

*And holy cow, the PS4 is GOING TO BE A BEAST!!!

    * Not too won over by the Cloud service, but we’ll see how that pans out.

    Exciting stuff so far!

I love what they’re doing, the PS4’s unveiling is actually less about the PS4, but rather about the individual developers and their teams. That’s a nice touch. It’s almost as if they’re acknowledging that they made a mistake with the PS3, by making it a swamp to develop for and now, they’re allowing devs to be strange and oddball…

Well, I won’t say that there have never been questions of validity regarding videos shown at games conferences. That would be a stupid lie. However, as I said below, it’s extremely unlikely that 8+ developers/publishers, both internal and 3rd party would have done this across the board, live, for Sony.

Plus, we’re also talking a behemoth of a machine here. 8 Core CPU, with 8g of GDDR5 in a unified architecture? I mean, seriously, that’s going to blow the doors off of what many people have become accustomed to seeing their consoles (and some PC’s for that matter) produce.

Well, at least we got to see how pretty are the PC generated trailers our favorite devs can create! What a let down.

Watch_Dogs stole the show. And maybe Killzone (I’m still recovering from the dullness of 3).

And no console was shown. Great. Downvote all you want, this was a letdown.

All those devs showed was their new engines, and the power next gen will have… Bear in mind that some of those (Bungie, Capcom, Square, Ubisoft) aren’t even exclusive to Sony, so, really, besides the impressive Quantic Dream tech demo, the Killzone demo and the inFamous Second Son CGI trailer, what was shown that makes my statement of the conference being a letdown wrong?

And sorry, but I can’t feel excited about Diablo III.

Oh, I’m sorry, had you seen the new Capcom game already? No? Ubisofts? No? Sorry if you don’t actually like games, not my problem. You made a blanket statement questioning the validity of the demos, and specifically asked for down votes. I granted your wish.

And it’s called a business strategy, you don’t release every piece of information all at once. You hand out tid bits here and there, allow each announcement to continuously build hype. Drop it all at once, and you’ve got nothing left to keep people thinking/talking about it. You’ve blown your load too soon, and with Microsoft’s presentation coming shortly, it’s a good idea to have a store of hype to keep people thinking about your product also.

Sony started the ball yesterday, and the coming electronics shows between now and launch in late 2013, should have plenty more information.

EAnd sorry, I stopped paying you attention when you stated in other post you were a PC gamer… Seeing you here taking side on a console war or whatever the hell you’re doing just got pointless. I’ll be as critic with MS as I’m with Sony if they give a boring conference like they did on last year’s E3, or just like Sony did last night, can you say the same? Will you be as objetive?

But, whatever, man, you enjoyed yet? Great. I’m glad people still get easily impressed. Me? I’m sticking to PC on this one, at least for the first few years, when everything will be raw, and stupid decisions will be made. Same thing I did with last gen, and I didn’t miss shit.

I’m taking a stand here, but if for some diabolic reason GTA V has to jump to the next gen, I’ll be buying one of these bad boys without even thinking it 😛

In the end I (and I think most of us) only really care about the games…

          • mornelithe

            February 23, 2013 at 11:08

Given what I’ve seen of GTAV, I would not be surprised. Some of the view distances didn’t seem possible on current hardware, given what we’ve seen of them this gen and given how much is going on in GTA games. We’ll see though.

          • mornelithe

            February 21, 2013 at 13:18

Pointless and silly, why exactly? Do you think there’s some law in America that states a man can only purchase a PC OR a Playstation 3? Because, I think you’re making assumptions here. I own a launch 60g PS3 and a Gaming Rig. I worked, and saved for them both.

And this isn’t a ‘stance’ I’m taking for either console…especially considering Microsoft hasn’t announced theirs yet. I’m excited, because regardless of whether the PS4 or Durango is a success, PC Gaming is finally going to see some love, because hardware capabilities in the consoles have been jacked up pretty high.

I also love Gran Turismo, so every other game that Sony comes out with aside, I have to have that game…so I buy Sony consoles. If GT came out on PC, I wouldn’t need to, and maybe have to find another IP on console to convince me to buy it.

Impressed? Sure, why not. I think Sony managed to turn things around for themselves last night, or at least, put their best foot forward. I think I’ll stick to whatever platform, I feel like playing, since I have so many options here in the house. I like variety, I’m not just stuck on one platform, I do prefer PC for most things, but racing and fighting games I largely play on console. Although, Mugen for PC is probably one of the greatest fighting games ever.

With the current economy the price better be cheap if not this will suffer the same fate as the vita.

Good luck Sony… you’re going to need it..

Well, sorry you feel that way, but it’s important to note that it’s simply a ‘feeling’. Not truth. The truth is, there is no PC you can buy with 8G of GDDR5 as the system memory. And there’s actually no GPU’s out there that have 8G on-board either.

Additionally, they didn’t reveal the specs of the GPU either, and given that there are no games currently running the UE4 engine…. Obviously, one could build a higher-end PC, without a doubt. SLI/Crossfire, mobo’s that can handle 16g+ of RAM etc… But, this is pretty competitive _right_ now.

And lastly, were you expecting Sony to have them put the brand new GTX Titan in their machine? That’s simply unrealistic.

To each their own, but thought I should clarify a few things.

Sony didn’t have much of a choice. They have to blow people out of the water otherwise the company is done for. This is their last chance basically.

One of the most impressive features for me is the self-publishing for indie developers. Almost seems to me to go the Android route. That to me could make a huge difference for them.
