[Updated] Wait to update your PS3!

collaborate and listen, in the name of love or because it's hammer time?

Warning one and all – there appears to be a problem with the update to 4.45.  It’s not universal, yet for some people it has led to their PS3 being bricked!

The console seems to get stuck at the boot-up screen and becomes completely unresponsive.  Users reported that they couldn’t even power down properly, they were forced to unplug the system.  So, give it a few days for Sony to sort out before you update your PS3.  For some, this means playing offline, or not watching Netflix.

Anyone need any good book recommendations?

Your other option is to use your trusty old Xbox 360 which doesn’t update automatically and has never bricked itself by updating. I’ve lost track of how many times something like this has happened to the big black box from Sony.

Their new UI looks like a huge leap forward but can we really be sure it’s going to be as solid as it looks when they are still unable to safely release patches out into the wild?

[Update]  It seems the update is mostly affecting consoles with drives larger than 500GB, and system with user-installed drives. Further to that, Sony has taken the update offline, so you can play your PS3 without worry. If, however, you have bricked your PS3, all is not lost – you can still fix it through recovery mode, but you’ll have to wait until sony releases a newer, updated firmware.

  • Martin du preez

It seems to be affecting mostly those who upgraded their HDD.

    • Admiral Chief Groot Wors

      Really?

      • Haunted99

I read it was a problem for people with a 500GB Hdd and up. I don’t know if my ps was updated but it worked fine this morning.

        • Jonah Cash

Same here, updated yesterday and have no problems….

          • Hammersteyn

            Here’s hoping then.

    • Johan du Preez

Just a quick question from a non console gamer, can you slap in any external drive or does the PS3 only support specific hard drives.

      • Marc O Polo

it takes the smaller hdd, same ones used in laptop etc, not sure if it can take solid state hdds thou

      • http://www.twitter.com/WobblyOnion Exalted Overlord Geoffrey Tim

It takes any 2.5 inch. SSD, platter-based drive. whatevs.

  • Jakster

LOL… I feel sorry for the dudes that have to cough out R2k for a refurbed PS3. Sony can’t release a AAA title without a humongous update, neither can they release proper firmware. This is the irony of PS fanbois constantly talking about the X1 bricking after 24 internet-less hour. Seems to affect those who DIY’d a HDD upgrade for that PSN+ freebies, lol.

    • Daniel Keevy

      Wow.

  • Anon A Mouse

Luckily I don’t have innernetz at da home so I’m still on whatever my PS3 came out with that many moons ago. Still going strong without any problems so I don’t see why it’s needed.

    • Rinceyouropinion

But if you don’t have the internet, how the hell are you going to play the Xbox ONE!? Trololol ;)

  • Jakster

    Tehehehe….

    • Hammersteyn

At least your day has been made knowing
other people might have problems with the update, I’m glad you’re happy.

      • Jakster

My day is made knowing history repeats itself.

        • Hammersteyn

So you won’t mind when the RROD comes back?

          • Jakster

Nope. I more worried about the costs associated with a YLOD.

          • Hammersteyn

So then you have a PS and not a XBOX?

      • Daniel Keevy

My day is made by crushing my enemies and hearing the lamentations of their women.

        • Skyblue

          Respect for the Conan quote

  • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

Is it just me or is the quality of work for the entire industry just going down the drain?

Bad servers, bricked devices, huge launch day updates etc. Sad time to be a gamer

    • FoxOneZA – X-Therminator

There’s no excuse for quality control.

      • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

No there isn’t. But that’s what floors me. Things that are so obviously broken/unfinished/untested etc are being released to the public. Not just by Sony, but everywhere. Nintendo had their little 5GB update nonsense, games come out buggy and incomplete etc.

The entire industry is releasing poor quality and it’s not a good thing at all.

        • Double-O-Six and a half

I couldn’t agree more, I sometimes yearn for the days of the good ole PS2 where developers HAD to get it right, none of this login, patch, update, rinse and repeat nonsense!!! If you published a buggy game back in PS2 days it didn’t get bought, but nowadays the online world has created lazy developers who believe its okay to release sub-standard crap onto the market with the attitude of “we’ll fix it with a patch…”

“If debugging is the process of removing bugs from a system, then surely developing is the process of putting them in…”

          • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

            So very true.
The worst of it? As gamers we are allowing this to happen. We shouldn’t be ok with having to download patches to fix things that should never have been broken.

        • Trevor Davies

It works just fine on their dev rigs #dealwithit ;)

          • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

hahaha. What’s the bet it doesn’t actually and that they release whatever they have when the promised release date rolls round?

        • FoxOneZA – X-Therminator

Have to say, the largest patch I’ve had on an Xbox title was 180mb. I remember when Burnout Paradise got it’s first patch, It was like 800mb but that added like 75% more to the game. These dev’s should gives us more for in return for being their glorified testers.

I purchased a Wii U few weeks back and the mandatory update set me back 1gb of data. Not as bad as previously stated.

    • Reboot

The problem is… There are too many features. With so many
features, no matter how much QA you do, you will always have something
breaking. This is one of the reasons why the PS1 and XBOX original were
successful, they were simplistic, there were no updates/fixes required to work
      with so many feature.

  • Hammersteyn

And I read this before my first coffee….

    • Admiral Chief Groot Wors

      Mmmmmm, coffeeeeeeee

      • Hammersteyn

Fist cup is gone time for a second.

        • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

I give you the fist cup:

          • Admiral Chief Groot Wors

            HAHAHA

*LC rolls for effective troll…..Rolls 20 AUTOMATIC HIT*

          • Hammersteyn

            LOL

        • Admiral Chief Groot Wors

I cannot wait to see your response to the below trolling :P

          • Hammersteyn

Can’t really be bothered with @a1aaf814879cad51e3b2540c5bb93781:disqus or certain Foxes who only pops out when the troll feed has been poured in the trough.

You see the same thing on Sports24. Every time they post something on say the Stormers just as an example people come out guns blazing about how their team is the best and how they are going to win. Come Saturday after the game. 0 Comments.

Troll if you want to,it’s all fun and games, but don’t be a chicken shit and have nothing to say when the news is not in your favor

          • Admiral Chief Groot Wors

            No man, Llew’s trolling :)

          • Hammersteyn

Great, so now I rant wile missing the point completely. Great day so far….

          • Admiral Chief Groot Wors

Points for the rant though :)

          • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

Hahahaha. It’s ok man :) Just one of those days. Kudos to your rant though. Have an upvote :)

          • Rinceyouropinion

Coffee? Or can I help with Le Sigh?

  • Happy Hamster

That Sucks Monkeys Balls if anyone has updated

but “Your other option is to use your trusty old Xbox 360 which doesn’t update automatically and has never bricked itself by updating” Xbox has had a update issue in the past where they were screwed at the startup as well

    • Argentil

Auto-update on PS Plus downloads the patch, but doesn’t install it until you click the ok.

  • nicksimp101

    You mean…”Their new UI looks…”

    • Trevor Davies

Field Marshall Pat has made my morning :D

  • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew
    • Admiral Chief Groot Wors

      HAHAHAHHAHA LC FTW

    • Rinceyouropinion

      Well done sir, well done!

  • Melasco

Oh shit, mine will probably auto update while I’m not there….. :’( Can you somehow undo it? Mine is still that standard 160Gb Slim…. If I can’t play The Last Of Us tonight there shall be k@k….

    • Admiral Chief Groot Wors

Yes, sell it and buy a PC

      :P

    • Admiral Chief Groot Wors

Ag toe nou, downvote for a joke? Nooit dude. Lighten up

      • Melasco

It wasn’t me :( I have a PC, Just like console more hehe.

        • Argentil

It won’t apply the patch, it should only download it. Rest easy.

  • Skyblue

One step forward, two steps back
    oh Sony

  • Jonah Cash

I ran the update yesterday and there doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with mine!! Playing Rugby Challenge 2 on it and it runs perfectly….. Maybe someone just did something wrong with their hardware and now their software doesn’t like it???? Mine is stock standard…..

  • Rinceyouropinion

Hahahaha! The Xbox 360 never bricked itself, I’d call the RRO fucking DEATH bricking on a scale that only Titans should know about!

    • ElimiNathan

      haha

    • Jakster

      Haha!

At least M$ made right with a 3yr warranty. 1yr for each replacement.

      • Rinceyouropinion

This is true! They were good with that, my boet’s died and he had a new one in 2 days. Still, that’s 2 days of watching Days of our Lives…

      • Argentil

Ouch. I really don’t see them making the same mistake again. Way too costly.

    • Mathias

God, people will never stop with the RROD… I’m over consoles, now, but as a system, the PS3 always gave me a lot of more trouble than my Xbox. And I have my Elite since 2009 and never had an issue. Meanwhile, in 2013, Sony releases a patch that fucks things up. Way to go.

      • Rinceyouropinion

Agreed. Was just saying. I’ve had my Xbox360 for 5 years and it hasn’t flashed me any red yet…

  • Daniel Keevy

Is this the update that came with The Last of Us? If so, then poop!

    • Zoe

Doesn’t seem like it – I installed that one without any issues. :)

      • Daniel Keevy

Whew! Because I haven’t been able to touch my PS since installing Last of Us. Thanks!

  • RMKennySA

okay enough is enough…. HOW DO I GET NETFLIX!!!

    • http://www.twitter.com/WobblyOnion Exalted Overlord Geoffrey Tim

      http://www.lazygamer.net/xbox-360/unotelly-reviewed-get-the-digital-content-you-want/

then just sign up. You’ll need a US or UK account on Xbox or Ps3 to sign up and download the netflix app.

      • Zoe

damn you geoff, quicker on the draw than me!

      • RMKennySA

Thanking you! There is light at the end of the tunnel! Will give it a shot tonight.

        • Argentil

Welcome to the world of on-demand television. It’s glorious. Enjoy!

      • Happy Hamster

        unotelly = $4.99 (R49.91) + Netflix $7.99 (R79.92) Paying a Total R129.33 for 2500 movies series and access to channels ABC , CBS = PRICELESS
For everything else theres being ripped off by DSTV for crap at R750

  • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

Awesome thanks, I’ll keep the old girl offline for now.

  • Skyblue

Booting up now, “just say no”. Off to fetch a copy of Last of Us this arvie.
Not asking to update, assuming Sony must have pulled it after reports. PS Store is still working, XCOM, here I come.

  • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

Technically, it’s not “bricked”. since you can still go into recovery mode and fix it by formatting your drive. For a device to be bricked, the name actually says it all, you can’t use it any further. It’s become… “a brick”.

    • Jakster

I see what you did there…

      • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

And I see what you’re doing!

        • Jakster

Drag and Clown is not the same. Not the same.

          • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

            hehehe

  • Marc O Polo

Ps3 doesn’t update automatically unless you set it to…

  • https://twitter.com/Firehawk305 iPrimal

Now I’m afraid to turn on my ps3. I’m a PS+ user, and have auto-update.

  • Vampyre Squirrel

LOL! so Sony’s still sending out PS3 upgrades that brick the consoles? Things obviously haven’t changed in the last year since I stopped working at their call center in JHB.
