If you’re one of the seven (citation needed) South Africans who actually own a PlayStation Vita, go and do a system update, right now. Yup, Firmware 2.0 is live – and it’s actually a pretty good update.

It adds an email application, allows you to switch to the browser while in-game (without having to quit your game, making it actually useful), updates the maps application to include weather, gives
Near a slight upgrade and includes a speed enhancement or two.

Mostly though, it adds PlayStation Plus to the Vita – and that’s awesome. With Plus, you get 1Gb of online cloud storage, game updates download automatically and best of all, you get free games.

When the Playstation Store updates later, PS+ subscribers in European territories will be able to download two of the system’s very best games, for free; Uncharted: Golden Abyss and Gravity Rush. The PlayStation Blog says that you’ll also get Steampunk platformer Chronovault, and the ridiculous charming Tales From Space: Mutant Blobs Attack.

PS Plus subscribers in the US get an even better deal, with the following games added to their “instant game collection”

  • Uncharted: Golden Abyss
  • Gravity Rush
  • WipEout 2048
  • Tales From Space: Mutant Blobs Attack
  • Jet Set Radio
  • Final Fantasy Tactics
  • Dungeon Defenders

If you’re a PS3 owner already subscribed to PlayStation Plus, you’ll get the goods on your Vita for no extra cost. It’s probably not exactly going to help sell too many Vita’s right now – but it’s exactly the sort of thing Sony should be doing to make the system a little more appealing.
