Unity could never reach 1080p on PS4

Ubisoft has come under a ton of fire after trying to avoid the entire resolutiongate debate last week. Fans claimed that the Ps4 version in particular had suffered a downgrade in order to keep parity between both current-gen consoles. That may not be true, as one Ubisoft developer claims the game could never reach 1080p on Sony’s console.

During the latest GiantBomb podcast an email was sent to the crew and read out during the recording. The email in question seems to have come from an anonymous Ubisoft developer, although the credentials have not been completely confirmed yet. The email in questions addressed all of the fuss that has been kicked up over the last week over frame rate and resolution, with the developer in question saying 1080p was just never possible on either console.

I’m happy to enlighten you guys because way too much bullshit about 1080p making a difference is being thrown around. If the game is as pretty and fun as ours will be, who cares? Getting this game to 900p was a BITCH. The game is so huge in terms of rendering that it took months to get it to 720p at 30fps. The game was 9fps 9 months ago. We only achieved 900p at 30fps weeks ago. The PS4 couldn’t handle 1080p 30fps for our game, whatever people, or Sony and Microsoft say. Yes, we have a deal with Microsoft, and yes we don’t want people fighting over it, but with all the recent concessions from Microsoft, backing out of CPU reservations not once, but twice, you’re talking about a 1 or 2 fps difference between the two consoles. So yes, locking the framerate is a conscious decision to keep people bullshiting, but that doesn’t seem to have worked in the end.

Now some of that makes a lot of sense. I have no doubt that both versions could in fact reach 1080p, if you just chuck frame rate out of the window. At that resolution there were most probably differences between the two consoles, but I’m assuming Ubisoft couldn’t lock wither of them to 30FPS. Considering that’s pretty important, a drop in resolution makes sense.

The developer also claims that Sony and Microsoft both pushed for a visually stunning game over anything else, which is why so much has gone into making Unity look and feel like a next-gen experience.

Consider this, they started this game so early for next gen, MS and Sony wanted to push graphics first, so that’s what we did. I believe 50% of the CPU is dedicated to helping the rendering by processing pre-packaged information, and in our case, much like Unreal 4, baked global illumination lighting. The result is amazing graphically, the depth of field and lighting effects are beyond anything you’ve seen on the market, and even may surpass Infamous and others.

But again, does the lock at 1080p/60FPS really matter? I’ve been playing Shadow of Mordor on and off on PC lately, and while I’m able to hit 1080p I chose to lock the frame rate at 30FPS. Not because I couldn’t reach 60, but rather because at 30 I experienced no fluctuations (Ed’s note: fluck you, too!)  at all. That’s far more important than hitting double the frame rate half of the time, and I think a similar concession has been made with Unity.

Regardless, I’m really looking forward to Unity. I had the chance to give it a go at rAge, and I thoroughly enjoyed my time with it. That, in the end, is what matters most.

  1. Off subject, but is it really worth getting the Tomb Raider GOTY? Or should I just get the base game.

Most of the stuff is MP related & skins, so if you’re not interested in that don’t bother. Can just pick up the main game and SP DLC like Tomb of the Lost Adventurer and skills.

I disagree. If it fluctuates then the framerate is all over the place. Really messes with immersion. A locked framerate is always a better option, in my opinion.

It’s why games like Second Son and Shadow of Mordor include it as an option. It’s also why a lot of open-world games lock it at 30, because maintaining 60 is way too difficult.

We’ll have to agree to disagree. In my view when the rate exceeds 30fps then any fluctuations become very subtle to the eye and negligible.

urm… But didn’t I say they need to cut the crap about being more “cinematic” and just admit that it’s physical hardware limitations? Now if this had been the standpoint of Ubi from the get go there wouldn’t have been so much hate thrown at them. Sheesh. I wish people would listen to me.

And to everyone who thinks that fluctuating framerate isn’t an issue on PC if it’s still higher than 30 I have news for you. It’s horrible. If I can’t keep my frames above 50FPS all the time I will drop the res to make sure I do. A drop of more than 10 frames from 60 to sub 50 is very jarring and noticeable.

On average, liars used more swear words than did truth tellers. Using words like bullshit, bitch and bullshiting are signs of this. They also speak in more complex sentences. Plus he admitted they have a deal with MS and Ubisoft will never be 100% transparent about it.

I myself will rather turn some graphics down to get a smooth 60fps experience but then again im running it at 4k at 60fps.

    Let me interpret his message.

9 months ago the game was running at 720p 9fps. Took them months to get to 900p 30fps. Pushing the game passed 720p they found out that the Xbox One maxes out at 900p 30fps. The deal that’s in places with Microsoft means that they can not push the PS4 farther than what they achieved with the Xbox One. No downgrade. Just no farther upgrading.

Anyway. The Witcher 3 is coming.

I actually don’t mind 900p/30fps, but this seems like BS to me. The PS4 has a considerably more powerful GPU, with most of its specs being 50%+ more powerful than the Xbox GPU. That along with the PS4’s faster RAM should result in a hell of a lot more than “1 or 2 fps” at the same resolution. To put in t in context, if you replaced the GPU in your PC with a different one that was 50% more powerful I think you’d be scratching your head if you for no big performance increase.

Again we have a very weird response from Ubisoft that does not make logical sense. They now claim the game could NEVER reach 1080p 30fps on PS4 due to the CPU being overloaded. But as I have claimed all along, the PS4 GPU allows spare capacity to be used to preform CPU tasks via the asynchronous compute feature. The PS4 GPU is a third larger than the XB1 GPU, so there is spare capacity that could have been used to clear the CPU blockage and achieve 1080p.

I would have had more respect for them if they had said that using asynchronous compute right now was not an option because it requires a few more years research how best to implement it. But the claim NEVER just beggars belief. Are they NEVER going to use asynchronous compute then and NEVER fully utilise the power inside the PS4? Not even trying in order to keep it the same as the XB1 is gimping. That is a waste of resources and morally wrong.
