I often think that WWII gets way more attention than it should in gaming, I suppose because no one feels bad about killing Nazis. However, there were so many other interesting wars in history – I’m excited about this new game from Ubisoft that’s based on actual letters from WWI.
Telling the stories of five unique characters from different sides of the trenches, Valiant Hearts: The Great War is a downloadable 2D platformer set during WWI. Oh, and like all games of the new generation, there’s a dog! I really like the look of this game, though – it seems to be taking a page from the indie gaming book and is focused on story telling and game design. As explained on the Ubisoft blog,
Solve puzzles and sneak through enemy lines while doing your best to stay alive. Each of the five playable characters (including the lovelorn German soldier) work alongside the same faithful canine companion at different times, all trying to survive in the trenches while doing their best to hold onto their humanity in the face of loss and tragedy. Though it’s set during a dark time in history, there are lighthearted (and even comical) moments spread throughout the game.
I think the game looks pretty cool. I like the aesthetic and the story shown in the launch trailer seems intriguing. Valiant Hearts: The Great War is coming next year to PC, PS3 and PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Check out the trailer and screenshots:

Wow ! …this looks awesome 🙂 … great to see something fresh, different and clearly not a big-budget profit-seeker coming out from a big game developer

I think there should be a game that covers all wars between 1800-1900. Right across the globe! Just think how cool that would be! Also…Anglo Boer War!

You have mentioned a grand total of 0 game mechanics, not even as much as a genre, and then say to imagine the game and how cool it would be… that assignment is too hard to imagine 😛

Unless if it can drive in your vehicle with you, because then it’s a GTAV clone… 😛

Send a memo to Square Enix please. So they can see how one can make games without blowing millions on a budget.

Send a memo to SEGA & Capcom so they can see platformers are not dead… and that the world would accept a new Mega Man and Sonic in traditional 2D format with open arms and cash-filled fists ! 🙂
