Two thirds of Kickstarter games failed in 2012

1001

Time to get mathematical! Kickstarter took off in 2012, as thousands of games were pitched in order to get a slice of that sweet crowdsourcing pie. While Double Fine and a few others were big success stories, plenty of smaller games also managed to garner enough pledges to see dreams become reality.

According to Kickstarter, 2796 games were launched on their platform (Including tabletop games), a total number of which 911 were successful. Technically, that’s a success rate of only 32.58%, or more than two thirds of failure right there.

Of those games, a total of $83, 144, 565 was pledged. That makes gaming the second most popular category on Kickstarter, behind art.

Yes, gaming got beaten by those barefoot hippies who don’t dig nuclear power stations. (I keed) (No I don’t, I still hate fine art students.)

Some of the big name successes so far include Double Fine setting the bar with their adventure project, the Ouya console bringing in some mad cash, VR gaming making a comeback with the Oculus Rift and even Peter Molyneux crying enough crocodile tears for Project Godus.

Here’s to a 2013 season of new projects and games then.
