Turn 10 fixing Forza 5’s economy

2 min read

I'm not suggesting anything, but that is a boy, and that is a cot.

Forza 5, along with pretty much all of Microsoft’s first party launch titles are a bit of a microtransaction joke. In Forza 5, for example, you can pay real money to get the Forza accelerator, which grants you double XP. Instead of just earning cars, players have to use in-game tokens which can be earned by racing, or bought straight up. The most expensive car, the Lotus E21, if bought would cost £32.50, half the price of the game itself. It’s ludicrous – but it’s changing.

Microsoft recently said it was still figuring out this whole micro-transaction thing (ie: finding out how to bleed you dry without pissing you off at the same time) and they’ll be implementing a few changes to Forza 5 micro-transactions – and in the mean time, will be offering cars at a discount.

“We’re in the process of making some changes to the Forza Motorsport 5 economy. But, while we’re putting the final touches on that, we want to make sure everyone continues having a great time with Forza 5,” said Turn 10’s Brian Ekberg.

So here’s what they’ll be discounting,

  • 50 per cent off every car in the game between Friday 30th November at 8:01 a.m. GMT to Monday, 2nd December at 7:59 a.m. This includes purchasing them with credits or tokens.
  • Forza Motorsport 5 VIP members receive a free 2013 Lotus E21 grand prix car.
  • VIP members who already purchased the 2013 Lotus E21 will receive the 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO instead.
  • Those who have purchased the LaFerrari Car Pack or the Forza Motorsport 5 Car Pass will get the 2013 LaFerrari gifted directly into their garage.
  • Credit payouts for Forza Rewards – a loyalty program that rewards players for sticking with the series – will increase “dramatically” come December. Turn 10 noted, “The higher your Tier level reaches before December rolls around, the better the rewards you’ll be able to redeem, so get your play time in now and level up!”

This is just a quick fix as Turn 10 tries to sort out Forza 5’s silly, broken economy.

“Looking ahead, we’ll continue to make further adjustments to the Forza Motorsport 5 economy when they’re needed and I’ll be sure to keep you informed as these changes are made,” the developer added. “For now, take advantage of all the cool stuff coming your way and, as always, thanks for your patience and for being a member of the Forza Motorsport community.”

Disagree, if anything, it’s too low. You should pay a penalty for being a douche who can’t earn rewards in games.

Agreed. This is the stupid world of gaming these days where the kids with their parent’s credit cards (and douches) get to buy their XP and essentially their rank.

Kids fall under the douche category, it’s not their fault, they’re kids….but they’re still douches.

And I agree, this is what people have allowed gaming to become. I’ve said it tons of times, once you allow 1 game…just 1, to show any kind of sizeable profit through a previously unseen method, everyone else is going to mimic it.

its twice a month, and I stopped playing a little over a month ago. It’s boring man. You literally log on, do your dailies, farm your mats, do a boss fight or 3, maybe a dungeon, log off. Sometimes you go WvW, sometimes you fractal, but it just lost its fun aspect.

There’s…a slight difference there. Technically, you’re already paying the MMO charge if you have XBL Gold, or PS+. You’re paying for server maintenance and upkeep with that monthly fee.

It’d be real hard to sustain several thousand people on a server (like WoW does), if you were hosting it at home lol. Though, there are plenty of private (illegal) WoW servers you can play on, that require no monthly fee.

This is a lie. Here’s the strategy they have:

1: Publish games that have optional exorbitant “VIP Packs” and “Day One Packs”.
2: Deliberately include some dodgy glitches/microtransaction stuff
3: Publicly admit there’s some fixing to do.
4: Offer “bonuses” which only apply to owners of the packs in 1 above.

This is a meta-marketing scheme which tries to make people want these premium packs because “they get extra stuff if shit goes wrong”

I thought you were going to say the “Forza accelerator” is a part of the car you need to go faster. Double XP makes more sense, compared to that anyway.

If it can be earned by just playing the game that’s fine. I don’t mind them making money off those people who don’t want to earn it in game. It just appeals to people’s laziness. Kinda like fast food.

To be honest, buying cars way ahead of your experience will probably end with you kicking their ass. I can only imagine what any GT game would’ve been like had I started in a high-end supercar versus a more reasonable machine.

My problem is (along with what I said below), I view it as cheating, and along with the price tag, it should mark your Gamertag as a, cheater for life. And in a perfect world, you could view everyone’s game library and there’d be a mark next to each one where they cheated.

Yes, this is the scarlet letter of video games.

It’s why I’ve always been a massive proponent of the consoles using punkbuster. How amazing would it be, if you could add cheating douches (just like the PC douches…don’t get panties in a bunch) on console to the punkbuster master ban list and have it cross all platforms. PC, Wii U, PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, Xbox One, Steam Machine, Ouya, Tablet, Smartphone etc… all of them.

With that kind of threat, you’d see a bit less cheating I think. Though, you would have people going after punkbuster…but, with the weight of all the above companies behind them, you could bet your ass they’d have some tight security.

Agreed. (I’m a pc gamer, so agree on that too)
My first game on BF3 was on a server where a guy was cheating, put me off the game for half a year before I tried it again.

Dedicated server is a feature that really helps prevent that stuff as well. It’s impossible for Microsoft/Sony etc… to police every single server actively, and dedicated server let’s the end-user assume that authority.

We had 2 CoD servers (United Offensive and CoD 2) at the house for quite some time, still have 1, but we took the other down. Point is, I have the authority to ban and since I played on it a great deal, I was able to constantly oversee it. You just can’t get that with the model of Sony/MS/Activision/EA controlling the servers.

The same way we all (10% of vocal gamers) protested the horse armor DLC, the laymen casual gamers that buy games because they like the box, 90% of the gamers all voted with their wallets and it became the norm.
