Troll deletes 11-year-old Destiny player’s characters

Think of the children

Destiny had so much potential, much like a child – it could have grown up to be anything, but thanks to some early disappointments, it just doesn’t have the same support it once did. I have no idea where I’m going with this metaphor, but this story includes Destiny, a child, and great disappointment and heartbreak.

Henry was an avid Destiny player, despite the 16/Teen rating. Obviously his parents thought he was mature enough to handle the game’s content and violence. Unfortunately, he wasn’t mature enough to know about trolls on the internet. Henry had not one but three Destiny characters, one for each of the game’s character classes; ranked level 23, 26 and 31, it’s clear that he cared a great deal about the game and his various creations. Of course, it’s all about leveling up and getting cool gear, something that often includes glitches or “cheesing” to move up in Destiny.

So when Henry heard about a new glitch, he was eager to see it in action. He told his Twitch viewers that he was giving control of his game to a friend – PSN user KirmitTHEfrog. This was someone that had contacted Henry in the past, an online friend of a real-life friend that Henry had played with and who had earned his trust. Such is the way Destiny friends are added.

Here is a video that is about as interesting as you might imagine an 11-year-old’s Destiny stream would be. He is mostly silent as he figures out how to let his “friend” use Share Play on his account. Of course, things get far worse for the kid. The consequences of talking to strangers are all too devastating as he watches his so-called friend delete his gear and characters. Upon restarting his PS4 he is able to assess the damage and see his characters are gone. All we are left with at the end of the video is the sound of a child sobbing.

Unfortunately, Bungie can’t help on this matter. They have an established policy that they don’t want to break – because the troll was legitimately given control of Henry’s console, technically no wrongdoing was done. Of course this is an awful situation and Bungie has reminded people to be careful who they Share Play with – even the PSN user KirmitTHEfrog who did this to poor Henry might have been a victim himself.

It’s all a rather distressing situation for the boy, although he is still playing Destiny with his friends and building himself back up. Still, it’s simply despicable that someone would troll a child (or anyone naive enough to Share Play with a stranger) to this degree. This goes far beyond having a good time and is a blight on the gaming community. Of course, like phishing scams and other activities, it’s here to stay. I suppose this is yet another reason for parental guidance when children are playing, especially if they’re playing with strangers online.

Bwahahahahaaaaa! This is bad yes, but first of all too young for the game, second of all if you deem yourself “mature” enough and fall for this it is your own damn fault! Yes, shame on the troll, but bwahahahahahaaa!

You’re one mean asshole, you know that? As much as I troll, a lot. I couldn’t do this to someone. It’s just fucking cruel. And here you are laughing at an 11 year old kid’s torment. Because why? Asshole.

I don’t troll in games, never mind “I couldn’t do this to someone”. The reason I am laughing, is because the kid is NOT SUPPOSED to even be playing the game. He and his parents deem him “mature” enough to play the game, yet he is so naïve that this happens? THAT is why I am laughing. Is it a deplorable thing to do? YES! Is it funny to me – yes. At least I don’t have to resort to name calling and swearing hey? You probably feel this strongly about it because you are a young immature little troll yourself?

No, because I have a heart. Because I don’t revel in the cruelty towards others. Regardless of whether or not this kid was meant to be playing the game, nobody deserves to have their hard work just obliterated. Imagine you work hard, buy your home, and you ask someone to house sit. Then oops, they just broke all the windows and doors. And your TV. And all your shit. But left your clothes. THAT is what the kid just went through. And you’re laughing at it. The severity, regardless of the situation, remains the same. To that kid, those characters were his world. His home. And that was just destroyed. Because someone was an asshole. NOT because he played the game, NOT because he asked to have his work destroyed, and NOT because he wanted to see what the exploit was. It was because SOMEONE was an ASSHOLE.

Fucking asshole. It’s not name calling. It’s the truth. And you’re an asshole for laughing at that kid.

Yes, small mind. Because I care. What a sad world we live in when caring enough to be angry about people being assholes is considered having a small mind.

Go die. Please. The world would be better off.

You are not getting why I am still on here “trolling” you now. I do see where you are coming from with your opinion – it is totally valid and I respect that. Perhaps if I actually watched the video, I would have more sympathy for an entitled little naïve brat. But caring about something bad that happened does not give you the right to go on a swearing and insulting “rampage”. Telling someone to go die? That is WORSE than “just” laughing at someone else’s misfortune. There are BETTER, more MATURE ways to say the things you are trying to say which would give cause to think about my initial reaction. But it seems internet anonymity has taken away your common sense and decency. May you live in interesting times hehe 😛

Go watch the video. Get some perspective. Then come back and maybe you’ll understand why I’m so mad. And I am mad.

You do also realise, part of what I find funny about the situation, is that the kid wanted to exploit a glitch, right? “So when Henry heard about a new glitch, he was eager to see it in action”. Any case, good on you for being confident you would say it in real life too – respect, sort of.

I remember I once exploited a glitch in an earlier iteration of GTA. I could teleport through a building somehow and get to its roof (something to do with some weird double jumping trick). Someone should have totally deleted all my saves if I asked them to show me that one. I totally would have deserved it.

Irrespective of the reason he relinquished control of his account, it was the other guy who was cruel. He destroyed that kid. For what? A laugh I suspect, much like yours. Your laughter is the same as the guy who deleted the characters and shat all over a kid’s hard work. There’s nothing funny about it. I sincerely hope you experience that one day for yourself, so you can understand what that feels like. Laugh then.

You know what, screw this kid.
You want to cheat, I don’t have respect for you.
You want to illicit the help of a stranger on the internet, by giving him access to your system, to help you cheat, to then have him screw you over…. good riddance.
why do the rules of the internet/games have to be different to the rules of life?
if you want to for example buy an iPhone through a “fall off the truck connection”, give him the money etc and you get screwed over by this guy, must I now feel sorry for you? No, you are getting what you deserved.
or if you are the idiot, rushing in the emergency lane, to try and cut past the queue, so you can squeeze in front of all the other cars at the off-ramp, because for some reason your time is more important than anyone else’s, and someone scratches your car/you damage your car, should I feel bad for you? No, you are an arsehole and deserve what you got.

This is hilarious. For one, it’s always great to see someone attack your intelligence while being unable to use Engrish-linguish. Two, it provides irrefutable evidence of the aforementioned “tiny small mind hahaha :P” – but just not the way he intended.

            February 24, 2015 at 10:02

I am “trolling” him about that because of his swearing and name calling. I do not know his real level in intelligence – he might be smarter than us all in real life. Had he just stated his dissatisfaction about me laughing without resorting to that, I would possibly have just seen his point of view (which I actually do), and acknowledged that my laughing as I did might have been inappropriate. In stead we have what we have here now 🙂

People over 30, over 40, over 50, over 60 are deceived on a day-to-day basis by strangers (friends and family too) who do horrible things to their bank accounts, etc. I guess you’d laugh at their expense too? Not really funny. Next time your card gets swiped/cloned and you lose a few grand, be sure to have a little chuckle at how naive you were and how you could have avoided it all if you were just such a an immature child.

When someone “used” my card to do fraudulent transactions I did have a chuckle. They did it in a country where I have never been and were caught out, and I got my money back. Plus, remember, the kid wanted to exploit a glitch – “when Henry heard about a new glitch, he was eager to see it in action”. So that is different from the normal day-to-day things that happen. I would also laugh at a guy who downloads a torrent and gets a virus that wipes his drive 🙂

You’ve got to laugh about things in life, lest you be “immature” once again and believe that trusting people might actually be worth the trouble. 🙂 Indeed, malicious acts of the illegal nature should happen to people who are naive, right? Let’s just stop mucking about. If a criminal cons you, he should just be legally allowed to blow your head away. It was YOUR fault, anyway.

          • SargonTheGreatPandaOfAkkad

            February 24, 2015 at 10:08

No mate. No. Not only did you see the funny side, but you said “it is your own damn fault”. That is what I take issue with. You know who else says that? Generally? Society. When talking about women who get raped. No one ever deserves anything horrible happening to them. Ever. There are horrible people out there that do horrible shit. And you never, ever deserve it.

But again, wp. You said “this is bad yes” and “shame on the troll but bwahahahahaha”. You totally covered your bases. Now let’s continue laughing at other peoples misfortune. Because our lives are so bloody entertaining we need the misfortune of children to entertain us.

I was not drawing a direct comparison. Only highlighting that this sort of mentality is alive and well in other aspects of society. That is a part of our societies psyche. And that it is just plain wrong. At no point did I say that A is like B. There is a difference.

          • Lardus-Resident Perve

            February 24, 2015 at 10:22

True, you did not say “A is like B”, and no direct comparison is made. But you still draw slight a comparison between them here. You are right that there is a problem in society regarding this, however when someone is physically harmed I would not laugh at it.

          • SargonTheGreatPandaOfAkkad

            February 24, 2015 at 10:28

Emotional scars often take significantly longer to heal than physical ones. And they may even leave lasting life long imprints on individuals who suffer traumatic events. Listening to that child sobbing, there is a part of his brain which will forever have this event imprinted on his psyche, I promise you. And if you ask any psychologist just how damaging it could be, I think you’d very quickly realise why this event (and others like it) cause significantly more damage than bumps, bruises, and broken bones.

Look before I say anything I want to just say that I feel bad for the kid. Something like that seems far worse for a kid because let’s face it. Their responsibilities don’t revolve around things like maintaining a car and keeping a house going… But anyway moving swiftly along and skipping past the part where he is tecnically too young to be playing the game.

Regardless of how bad I feel for the kid, this is a good lesson learned. The parents could use this as a perfect example and time to drive home the reality that one should be mindful of strangers and not to trust them too easily.

I’m not saying the kid should become synical and not trust anyone, but it’s a good life lesson to learn that the real world can be tough. It can also be a fantastic time to teach the kid that life goes on and even a fall like this can be turned around in to something better.

As for the guy who deleted the kid’s characters?

I feel really bad for the kid – irrespective of whether he should/shouldn’t be playing it. And what lessons can an 11 year old perhaps take from this (most adults don’t learn their lessons otherwise we wouldn’t have drink/drive campaigns as an example)? I hope the troll gets a bad case of extreme infection in his/her you know what!!!

But I do agree with the aspect that parents need to consider online gaming. I do not allow my son to play online at all. The games he plays are “innocent” as far as possible and don’t require others to enjoy unless they friends coming over and they play on the couch.

Back in the day, when LAN parties were just starting to become popular, it was obscenely difficult to get everyone’s pc connected at a LAN on our win95/98 systems. There was internet, but it wasn’t even remotely as easy as it is today to look up the solution to a network problem. So each of our lan parties usually began with a couple of hours (sometimes a whole day) of trying anything and everything to get everyone connected.

On one particularly long trying-to-get-everyone-connected exercise, I gave up my pc to a very good friend of mine, who knew about 100x more about computers, in the hope that he could get me connected. If memory serves he asked me, after battling with my pc for an hour or two, whether or not he could reinstall windows on my system. “Sure,” I said, “do what you have to do.”
About an hour later I realised that my drive had been formatted in the process, and that I had lost something incredibly precious and hard-fought for (which makes this kid’s loss look like a mild inconvenience):

my ‘Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines’ game folder and save files, all of them up to the 19th and 2nd from last mission in which you have to destroy the V2 rockets. It took about 12 years before I scraped together the courage to play that far again, but luckily that time I managed to beat all 20 missions :’D Next: beyond the call of duty…

Bhawhahaha! He shouldn’t have been playing the game to start with. Then it also sounds as if this is a big flaw in the shareplay functionality! Surely it’s not suppose to allow you to delete things?
