Triad Wars won’t nickel and dime you

Just about every game these days is packing some kind of micro-payment system underneath its hood. All those little transactions add up at the end of the day, resulting in the usual pay-to-win model that gamers aren’t exactly fond of. Triad Wars is one game that will feature monetised content, but according to its developer United Front games, this dip into the Hong Kong underworld will focus on fun first.

In a recent Reddit AMA event, the development team was quizzed on whether or not Triad Wars would resort to pay-to-win game mechanics. After all, it might be completely worthwhile to drop $10.99 on outfitting your gang with a small thermonuclear device. “Our guiding principle is that gamers should be having fun, first and foremost,” producer Justin Bullard wrote. “We live and die by that at United Front Games.

We aren’t interested in nickel and diming people, but instead want to build a game that players will keep coming back to, because they love it. How we monetise is something we’ll be testing and tuning based on what we learn in our beta tests. Our guiding principle is that you shouldn’t ever have to pay in order to enjoy the game.

I genuinely don’t mind dropping some cash in a F2P title. What usually gets my goat however, is when a game that is worth the RRP of let’s say $50 manages to screw a $100 out of you. That’s something that I detest, and hope that I won’t see in Triad Wars. So how about the game then? According to design director Steve Ferreira, Triad Wars is all about action and strategy. But don’t call it an RTS:

You’ll be playing against real players online asynchronously. There’s a strong strategy and RPG component but we think of this as an action strategy game. Definitely not an RTS. All the great action mechanics from Sleeping Dogs are at the heart of Triad Wars but we’ve expanded on that with strategy based empire building components, which really changes it up.

I’m quite keen on Triad Wars. I have a massive love for Sleeping Dogs, as I won’t shut up about that game and its pork buns. And the last time a game tried mixing sandbox, action and strategy elements, must have been in the second Godfather game that was released way back in 2006. And I’m pretty certain that I can run a decent racket. Just ask the tennis players that I had my goons hobble.

Header win, such a movie! As for paying for in-game-content, screw that. Won’t be seeing a penny from me.

Talking about nickel and dime. Before you can play Triad Wars, you will have to give Telkom about R330 for the basic adsl option and then you will have to give a ISP about R200 for uncapped internet. That’s R530 before you can even play the game with a big chance of not playing the game before 5pm.

And like a lot of South Africans who can’t get Telkom to install adsl lines to the house, there is an option of R150 per gig mobile. So you looking at R150 every 2-3 days.

Then you can buy the game for R450. So you looking at R980 to get the game working for the adsl option.

Don’t support DRM. The Witcher 3 is coming.

The Witcher 3 = R500 to play the game for the rest of your life.

Pretty sure it’ll go for more than R500 😛 So looking forward to Witcher III!

I think that your logic may be flawed on a number of counts. Firstly there is no DRM with this game it is an online multiplayer game. Without the online how exactly are you going to play with other people. You don’t have to connect to the internet to play the single player mode, because there is no single player mode. Next you will be saying Stop netflix because it is DRM.

Also previously you supported piracy, but seeing that it comes from the internet according to your logic it should be classified as DRM because clearly internet = DRM for you.

Also if you are not interested in playing online games go play something else.

Yes DRM sucks but not as much as trolls who clearly don’t know DRM from their own arse.

Triad Wars will most likely be associated with Steam. So there is your DRM right there.

Netflix is a streaming service. I’m not sure if you can buy digital movies off Netflix. But when you buy a dvd or blu ray movie disc and you have to connect to Netflix over the internet before you can watch that disc then … DRM.

I don’t support piracy but I do speak out against certain notions that a lot of people have. Piracy is used a lot for when DRM gets implemented and for the lose of sales argument. I speak against those notions.

My post didn’t link online and DRM. I just mentioned the costs involved before the game can be played. Don’t support DRM, is the phase I say a lot. And The Witcher 3 will also be in a lot of my posts, until 24th Feb 2015 that is. Then it’s Cyberpunk 2077 time.

But I do see your troll post trying to make out that I don’t know what DRM is. DRM = internet lol. CD Projekt RED says no DRM and then people ask on The Witcher 3 forum if there will be a code in the box. I guess I don’t know what DRM is. lol.

Nice deflect, except likely means that you have jumped the gun in condemning. Also if you solely use internet for this one game and play for one month your argument about costs is relevant only to that instance. If you have internet for any other reason the argument does not hold any water. Also you are looking at this from a SA pint of view. It is a global game and as a SA consumer sadly we don’t even make a blip on that radar. But internet infrastructure is relatively cheap in other countries. I am talking about buying power and not pure exchange rate ratios.

And my trolling was purposefully idiotic as it was written in the same vein as yours.

Oh and by the way I don’t support DRM and yes Projekt RED is awesome but your comments are tiresome. Empty vessels make the most noise as the saying goes.

trolls who clearly don’t know DRM from their own arse.I don’t know how to respond.

Should I mention South Africa. Should I mention South Africa + Lazygamer. Should I mention South Africa + Titanfall. Well, all of that doesn’t matter. Not even a blip on the radar. Don’t mean nothing. Yet my comments …

I know. I should pretend that I am an American with the fastest bestest internet in the world and everything is so cheap and made in china. Oh the Africans would love that. Obama.

Your feeling about my comments being tiresome is all about you. Your personal feelings. You can skip my comments and down vote if need be. Makes no difference to my feelings.

What I will say though. I can say whatever I want to say. I will comment whatever I want to comment about. I’m glad that you took the time to inform me how tiresome I have became, just like how DRM…

All of this just to say – Don’t support DRM. The Witcher 3 is coming. tiresome. No DRM you support. Better I wonder.

Just to add. My 1st post I was not speaking to this guy. My reply post tried to speak to him. This post just talking to myself.
I did not call him stupid or an idiot or a troll. I guess only smart people do that.

Yip I am having a shit day and yip I was taking it out on you. Why? Well you see for some reason your posts annoy me. It comes across as self entitled, whiny bullshit. Yes I can see the Irony. As to skipping your comments, well I think that is quite an insightful plan and I will do so in the future. As to down voting I don’t do that, because it serves no purpose because If I don’t like what you said I will tell you and to why I didn’t like it.

I never said that you could not say what you wanted, in fact I encourage you to say what you want. But here is just my 2c say it in a manner that brings meaning and relevance to what you believe. Saying “don’t support DRM” does not bring anything meaningful to the table. Say why and what are the implications. And then give solutions, real world solutions not pie in the sky stuff.

I have been doing Don’t Support DRM for a very long time now. I have said so much and explained so much about DRM. I even used racial segregation to explain DRM. I can’t be expected to explain DRM in every post. These posts are just filler posts till the good stuff. Don’t Support DRM is more like a banner at the bottom of my posts.

If you know anything about the way I post, meaningful and relevance, is not something I do. I like to talk shit and be silly and post stupid comments. If everybody is looking in one direction, I will look the other way. I like it when I can do my stupid stuff and someone will post all the facts and lay out all the events. I don’t like doing the googling thing. I comment off the top of my head.

I like when people fight the topic and points made. I don’t like when people fight the person. You stupid and don’t know shit. That doesn’t lead to good dialog and debate.

I have very little beef with Free to Play titles when they are exactly that. One of the best imo is Blizzards Hearthstone, there is nothing you can’t get in that game by earning it the hardway. Some may argue it’s still play to win because people with more cash can buy more boosters but that’s crap, my deck runs exactly one legendary and apart from that costs under 1600 dust to craft and I’ve made into the top 10 ranks.

The mighty quest for epic loot is another great example of a free to play game, there is nothing in there that people can buy that feels like it gives them an unfair advantage over people who don’t want to pay. It’s all just extra fluff that really is not important to the core game.

Biggest problem with the free to play market is it is flooded with badly made, unbalanced, broken ass games that make it basically impossible to get past the starter stages with out forking out cash *cough Dungeon Keeper on mobile cough*.

As long as United Front don’t start throwing in broken crap and just make the stuff you can buy things like outfits, skins, cars & bikes you can’t use in street races etc…. I think it could be a very cool game.

I am just glad it’s not some social crap you play in your browser on facebook.
