Battlecry

We’ve known for a while that Bethesda’s got a new game that they’re going to be showing off at E3. We, like many of you, have been not-so-secretly have been hoping it would be Fallout 4. Sorry chaps, it’s not. In a press release sent yesterday, the company unveiled its brand new game – a stylish, stylised game set in an alternate universe’s  World War. Interestingly, it’s not a shooter. Nor is it an RPG. It’s a 32 player online, mostly-melee brawler. Well that sounds interesting. Oh, and it’s free to play.

“The BattleCry team is happy to unveil the game that bears our studio’s name,” read the press release.

“We have been hard at work to create a fresh experience for gamers that brings together multiplayer action with visually stunning combat and are excited to share details about the game and have people play Battlecry in Bethesda’s booth at E3.”

The game’s creative director is Viktor Antonov, you might recognise as being the chap who helped create the distinctive worlds for both Half-Life 2 and Bethesda’s Arkane-developed Dishonored. The game certainly has an unusual visual flair. It’s essentially Bethesda’s take on Team Fortress, though it’s focuses more on close-up encounters than shooting things in the face. It’s a close-quarters war between the Royal Marines and the Cossack Empire; each outfitted with its own classes, each of those in turn with its own unique abilities.

Here’s the reveal trailer. The game’s getting a beta next year, but we’ll get some hands-on with the thing next month. Tell us what you think.

        Oh my god
        Becky, look at her sword
        It’s so big
She looks like one of those anime guys girlfriends
        Who understands those anime guys
They only talk to her because she looks like a total elf
        I mean her sword
        It’s just so big
        I can’t believe it’s so huge
        It’s just out there
        I mean, it’s gross

I like big swords and I can not lie
        You other elves can’t deny
That when a girl walks in with an itty bitty hilt
And a huge thing in your face
        You get sprung

The more I hear of dedicated online games coupled with free to play (which obviously includes in-app purchases) pushes me one step closer to next gen gaming retirement.

You say that, but there are games that get f2p right. Dota, GW2 (while you have to buy the base game, its still f2p) are the 2 that I play almost daily.

I know that Dota and GW2 does it right, but if you look at the majority of games that try to implement this model. It mostly burns down to a play to win or some extreme grinding style of play. I dont mind grinding at times in an RPG, but dont slow down the game to such a point where you forced to pay just to get a bit further into the game.

Yes that’s fair, and in that case I wouldn’t touch the game (Neverwinter, looking at you) – but what I’m saying is give every f2p game a fair chance to prove that it isn’t p2w. Give them the rope to hang themselves with, that’s all. But give them a chance. f2p isn’t always p2w.

Thats what i usually do. I do give them a try. I dont mind paying for certain things. it just to be worth the purchase. Maybe im just negative cause of the bad experiences ive had.

Looks like Bethesda is trying to get onto the money wagon here by leaving their successful SP games behind. I don’t really see the sense in this.

Well, yes and no, I mean the 2 online games they’re publishing, TESO and now battlecry, had Studios Created To make them. leaving the other studios (id, machine games, Arkane, Bethesda softworks, etc. to work on their OWN projects.) So it’s more like Jumping on the money wagon to FUND the Development of the Single player games.

Its by Bethesda there is no chance this game will work. Hit boxes will be everywhere, bugs will be crawling out of the walls while characters run through them.

      It will fail…

LoL. Look, call me old school but I am still stuck on the idea that if you write for the press (Even if said press is online like Lagz) the spelling, grammar and so on and so forth must be in tip top shape. The inner reader in me cannot help but cry a bit when I see some of the glaring mistakes made by the staff here.
But I love them all, this bunch of Lazygamers. Oh, who am I kidding? I am not capable of love!

Wonder when people will comprehend that they have different studio’s working on different games, would it even be worth my time explaining that pulling people off of the fallout 4 development to fix ESO bugs is very inefficient and unproductive ?

Yes, different studios working on different titles. But as a consumer, I would rather have them take people off other developments to FIX what should have been released AFTER a full beta test.

Nowadays studios are releasing buggy, unfinished games more and more to cash in, only to fix the bugs after release. Maybe you think that’s okay, but I certainly don’t.

Oh no I would NEVER buy ESO. And not because of the bugs alone. I bought Skyrim and after the initial patch and I loved it. One of my top 10 games ever. But we aren’t talking about a Bethesda SP game. We are talking about an MMO. One where you first pay R650 for the game, then pay additional money every month for a game that has a potentially game breaking problem.

            http://www.gamesradar.com/has-elder-scrolls-onlines-duping-bug-doomed-its-economy/

I bought the original Guild Wars at launch and yes, there were tons of annoying little issues. My mate was around for the WoW launch and told me the same thing. But they were easily fixed. But this is not the first time Bethesda have launch a buggy game (PS3 save issues for Skyrim) and their games are more buggy than the norm. To charge monthly fees on top of an already inflated initial purchase price is unacceptable in my opinion.

So, now you tell me, how long have you been playing ESO for? Enjoying it? Worth every cent?
Also, are you happy that games like Rome: Total War 2 and Alien: Colonial Marines getting released in the state they were in?

Sounds like its not a big deal to you.
