Thief is going to have some ‘purist’ options

Since the last time that we didn’t see Garrett make off with our CGC 7.8 graded first issue of Daredevil (YOU BASTARD!), gaming has changed. Regenerative health is the norm now, and you need an extra dollar or two to unlock some premium main menu content. But it looks like the upcoming Thief may have some more classic elements to it.

Speaking on the Eidos Montreal blog via SiliconEra, Thief director Nicolas Cantin explained how Thief would ship with an option that would enable players to switch off Garrett’s Focus ability, a skill which allows him to highlight items in his environment, making missions a touch easier.

“All I can say now is that Thief purists will have options – those types of players will definitely be pleased,” Cantin said.

Players will also have the chance to do more than just crank up the difficulty. They’ll get a chance to make their own rules in the game as well, which ties further into the use of Focus.

Presently, it’s the completely the players choice to use Focus or not. If players want to challenge themselves to stick to Garrett’s basic abilities, they can.

As a player you will have to manage it wisely when you accumulate it, and really think hard about when the best time is to use it.

It depends on how you decided to use it, but for example some things like combat, marksmanship, lock picking and pickpocketing have the ability to be enhanced by Garrett’s Focus – if you choose.

One thing that Focus won’t do for gamers though? Point gamers in the right direction and tell them where to go during a level. “It is a tool that can help the player, but it’s certainly not something that will hold your hand or guide you through the world,” Cantin said.

Thief is due out sometime next year.

Hipsters. Their order is a fading light in the dark…corrupt and arrogant. They must be punished. The hipsters shall fall!
