There’s an Inferno coming to Destiny next week

Inferno

Destiny is pretty much several games in one package. On the one hand, you’ve got the pseudo-RPG mechanics intertwined with the shoot ‘em up nature of this beast. On the other hand, you’ve got an arena shooter in the Crucible, a mode that is home to some deadly-skilled players. And on the third hand derived from a terrible mutation, you’ve got the waiting game, as Destiny will be changing once again with the latest playlist update.

Inferno playlists will strip the game to the bare minimum in the crucible from March 3, as this mode will focus on “basic gunplay”. It’ll last a week, and kick out any superfluous features such as radar, while giving Blade Dancers a slight debuffing. Basically, you’re going to need to use your good ol’ peepers in order to spot a target. Other changes include:

  • No Tracker
  • Simplified Scoring
  • Fast objective capture
  • Less Heavy Ammo

“We’re hoping this change will provoke players to rely even more on certain skills like map knowledge, teamwork, good positioning, successfully flanking opponents, using jumps to set up ambushes, catching audio cues like footsteps, and using friendly nameplate UI as clues toward enemy position,” senior designer Leif Johansen wrote in a Bungie weekly update.

Lack of Tracker should also indirectly reduce the effectiveness of Supers and Heavies, and make the mode more about basic gunplay.

This also means that smaller maps will be in play, which include:

  • The Anomaly
  • Firebase Delphi
  • Twilight Gap
  • Rusted Lands
  • Shores of Time
  • Blind Watch
  • Asylum
  • The Burning Shrine
  • The Cauldron
  • Pantheon

Sounds kind of fun. Destiny has the DNA of Bungie’s older Halo games in it. Maybe offering a pseudo-stripped down version of that iconic game is the way to go, seeing as how the current Master Chief Collection on Xbox One is an absolute mess right now, after 100 days and counting.

Can’t this be a permanent option? I’d play the crap out of this. I don’t favor supers or the stupid radar. I want a basic match.
