Baldur's Gate making a return

Role-playing games aren’t what they used to be, for better and worse. I think that’s why Divinity: Original Sin was such a hit last year, with the emphasis on old, more traditional role-playing mechanics. But when you think of old-school RPGs, Baldur’s Gate is usually the one that springs to mind first – and now there’s a sequel in development.

Developers Beamdog, who were behind the enhanced edition of Icewind Dale, have revealed that their teased “Adventure Y” title is actually a new Baldur’s Gate game. This new entry into the loved franchise is apparently a bridging title, taking place between the first and second Baldur’s Gate titles.

There’s not much else on the project, other than the fact that it will make use of the original game’s Infinity Engine (which was also used for the Enhanced Icewind Dale). That’s an engine that powered the first Baldur’s Gate all the way back in 1998, so fans are in for a real nostalgic treat. More details will apparently be revealed in the coming months.

Does this mean a fully fledged Baldur’s Gate III is a possibility? Beamdog has expressed interest in the idea in the past, and yesterday’s blog post doesn’t change that. It seems like studio head Trent Oster really likes the idea, but stresses that nothing is actually in the works yet.

We’d be lying if we said we never think about doing a Baldur’s Gate 3 game, so we won’t say that. But we will say there’s nothing in the works yet regarding BG3 or a 5th edition [Dungeons & Dragons] game. That doesn’t mean the opportunity will never arise, though, so we’re preparing by starting a tabletop 5th edition Dungeons & Dragons game here in the office.

But hey, there’s a new Baldur’s Gate coming regardless, and that’s just fine with me. Who else is looking forward to some classic RPG goodness?

  1. Oh come on, this is a complete slap in the face to anyone that was ever waiting for a new Baldur’s Gate. Beamdog merely made patched versions of the previous Baldur’s Gate titles, and did half-hearted tacked-on new characters that were badly drawn and even worse was their dialogue.

How are we supposed to be excited for a completely new Baldur’s Gate from these guys? Baldur’s Gate is renowned for its depth and polish, on top of its brilliant writing and superb voice-acting. No, I don’t want a Baldur’s Gate title from Beamdog.

I thank them for patching BG1 and BG2 and charging us full-price for them. They were not part of BG’s design and writing; they can stay the hell away from the series from this point.

Yup its a good game cause Black Isle Studios was amazing, I like what Beamdog is trying to do and hey if they can pull it of great. But the magic of the Baldurs Gate games is not the engine but the characters dialogue and depth of the world. And that im afraid only Black Isle Studios really shines at it.

In a perfect world Obsidian would get the rights to make BG3.

Good points, although I am very curious as to how Obsidian’s Pillars of Eternity is going to turnout in a few months. 😉

Black Isle was just the publishers for BG III, Bioware was the developers and I wouldn’t mind if they have a go at it.

Bioware is no longer “Bioware”; it’s now EA’s RPG team working under the banner of Bioware. The founders have left, the designers have left and most of the writers have left.

I do not care it has the same engine as Baldurs Gate & Icewind Dale but creating a new RPG is something different then enhancing an old game. I wonder if Beamdog is capable of creating a great story since they’ve no real experience with that as far as I know.

To be brutally frank I agree that Beamdogs attempts at broadening the characters wasn’t great and it highlights just how good the originals were. That being said I loved all those isometric RPGs and have absolutely no qualms about a company trying to re-create them. I’d happily spend cash on similar games if I expected 30-40 hours of being an evil sorcerer or orc thief or whatever especially on a tablet. Practice makes perfect so the more they try the better they will become. And whilst the enhanced editions had problems when they were released they have been steadily improved and the problems dealt with so as a company they’ve exhibited a tendency to do, screw up, fix, revise and try again but better… I say bring it on.
    It couldn’t hurt.
