The Xbox One won’t work if you import it early

As you probably already know by now, Microsoft’s Xbox One will not be available in South Africa when it launches in much of the rest of the world in November this year. It’s home to some really great games (like Dead Rising 3, which is one of my top games from E3) – which has some planning to import the console before its local launch. Unfortunately, that might not be a good plan.

It seems that the new Xbox One, which has Xbox Live and that goddamned nearly always online DRM nonsense so intrinsically interwoven in to it won’t work at all in regions where the console is unavailable. At launch, the list of countries where it will work is not especially large. Here are the countries that will get support at launch, according to a disclaimer on the Xbox One site.

Australia
Austria
Belgium
Brazil
Canada
Denmark
Finland
France
Germany
Ireland
Italy
Mexico
Netherlands
New Zealand
Norway
Russia
Spain
Sweden
Switzerland
United Kingdom
United States

“Xbox One games are for activation and distribution only in specified geographic regions. See game package and/or retailer product information, for each game’s specific geographic regions,” says the disclaimer.

What that means is that the system will actively block you from activating games if you fall without the supported territories. And if you take a look at those regions on Microsoft’s own map detailing said regions, we don’t even feature. At all.

xboxregions

You might think I was jumping to conclusions based on semantics – but the lock has  was confirmed by Xbox support.

xbonereqqdj

It’s a bit of a slap in the face to the local Xbox 360 die-hards, who imported that console well before local launch – and were in fact pivotal in getting the system launched here in the first place. So yeah – even if you wanted to get the Xbox One before everybody else (and by all accounts, you don’t) you wouldn’t be able to use it. Sure , there are probably ways around this silly geo-fencing, but you shouldn’t have to jump through hoops just to play video games.

Honestly, the way this is all going, I’m not even sure it’s worth Microsoft even launching the thing here. And that’s bad for everyone. But it’s ok. You could always just get an Xbox 360.

Thanks, neoGAF

How are you covered? I really don’t think this thing will see SA for quite some time!! So will you wait a year? I’m still on the fence when it comes to whether I will buy a next gen console before Christmas 2014, but MS has pissed me off so much that I want to buy a PS4 just to make my money talk for me!!!

Hahahaha!! They really see us as part of Africa!! The guys in SA fighting for them really need to wake up and smell the roses, they don’t give a shit about you!! You are nothing to them, they want to own America and they see that as big enough a market share for them… And I have owned a Xbox 360 from 2004, and only bought a PS3 last year…

Well, we can only hope that, seeing as they haven’t said anything about Japan, and that they have stressed how important that market is to them, maybe they have a few countries pending announcement for early next year, but haven’t pegged a timeframe as yet.

Because Im not from the SA…
So yes I will be able to get it on launch date.
The only reason not all regions are available from launch date is because they want to have a smooth launch without any technical issues and places where there is good internet reception.
Saying that MS pisses on ya’ll is just bullshit, they made some policies to give the consumer better experience. I give a flying crap about I have to connect, I am always connected (whenever I can) as much as possible, and its fine for me that I can lend my game once to a friend, and then even do it digitally so I dont have to meet him with a physical disc.
Ofc. there are some restrictions but those are to make better open-world games with more living persistent worlds, people just think MS are doing this cause they want to, they are doing this to make a greater experience..
And pls whoever is reading this, if u dont believe me then dont, just dont pull all that Go Stick it Up Microsofts Ass bullshit pleasee!.

            Listen to this dude.

X1 is designed for the privileged. For the top countries where internet is common factor in everyday life.

It is our own decision that we life where we life. It is our decision to be born where we are born. Its the same as hungry children in the rest of Africa. If they are hungry why don’t they just move somewhere where there is food.

Same as why don’t we just get better internet. It is so easy.

PS. I which there was something like a sarcastic font. Cause I’m afraid some ppl might take me seriously.

On the note of murica. Think there is more money for them there. As we don’t buy any FNL games here.

        • X1 will Dominate

          June 13, 2013 at 11:12

Not to talk about that I better like playing multiplayer/online, which the X1 is almost handmade cutout and designed to do. Nothing wrong with the PS4, but its cloud service and architecture isn’t designed as good for multiplayer gaming as the X1. And to play multiplayer you gotta have internet, so it all adds up for me 🙂

I was wondering earlier this year if it will even release here…now it seems it may…but who would want one?

All games will be server hosted. Including COD. That means no more locals only. So unless the setup servers in Jozi and Cape Town , cod will be a lagfest of note. So there goes the ‘but what about cod esports argument.

    Words have escaped me.

    So let’s recap:
    1) You need to be online once every 24hours or you get locked out of all games.
    2) You cannot resell your disks as you please. You must use the system that Microsoft has built in to its own system therefore cutting out the local game distributers completely.
    3) Now you cannot play with the bloody thing if it isn’t released in your country yet?

So let’s look at it this way:
    1) So only those who have proper internet. Most of the gaming world cut out
    2) Trying to destroy brick and mortar local game shops. Again, less sales
    3) again, cutting out vast numbers of gamers and again, cutting out sales.

Are they trying to sell the least amount of consoles possible? What are they even thinking!?

I was quite excited for it all, especially Monolith’s new game. plus windwaker looks awesome and am very excited to to see when they finally release a new Zelda. I still feel bad for them but I think they getting back on track now and now’s the perfect time to pump out games. when Xbox is failing then the best thing to do is go ps4 and WiiU, which is what I will be doing. What was your take

            June 13, 2013 at 11:21

Personally, I will be going PS4 & PC (+PSVita), this is the best generation to own a PC. I almost bought a WiiU, thinking Nintendo would amaze at E3. I just missed out on the R999 deals.
That said, I wasn’t impressed with their overall showing, but Mario Kart 8 looks fantastic. That was a smart choice to develop, they really pulled it off.
Windwaker was detailed a bit more and looked beautiful, but it wasn’t new.

Overall, I think they might have more to speak of at TGS.

            June 13, 2013 at 11:29

They didn’t have a strong showing but it did enough to get me excited. I tend to always lean towards Ninty because they always have a wide range of Jrpg’s which is my favorite genre. but agreed, Gonna be a good Generation for PC … but alas, my wallet will never hold enough money 🙁

            June 13, 2013 at 11:31

Ja, I will agree there. In the last 3 years, Nintendo seem to have picked up the JRPG torch that Microsoft dropped.

      So why pre-order in SA?

Customs duties? As in, when it arrives at the local airport, you get a phone call and a letter asking for amount X, for SA Customs.

That has caught me out once or twice, buy a piece of electronics from Europe and end up paying, say, R300 more to get it released from customs.

Well one issue is that Amazon have sold out of ‘launch day’ consoles. But no one is sure how many more launch consoles they will get.

Second issue is warranty. It’s risky getting launch consoles because of potential issues (RROD). Amazon require you to send the console back at your own cost – which might not be worth the risk.

Yes, I have considered that as well but you must admit with a potential R 6 500-00 investment it is a very scary thought considering that it has happened in the past even though the process was different. Microsoft has said that there will be no problems this time but if you take into account that they do not know if they are coming or going, I am taking it with a pinch of salt. Besides this thing will have a whole new version of the RROD that can cry havok on any entertainment.

Also, we were racist, instantly, as being White and from South Africa to people with a little bit more knowledge. Say 1 or 2 out of the 20 or so people we spoke to for more than a few minutes.

They are making it seem to be a privilege to have one. What happens the moment you put something out of someone’s reach and make it seem the best thing in the world? Like a Ferrari for example? Everyone now suddenly wants one and people will do their utmost to get one.

Bad example, but I think it is the type of marketing they are aiming for.

In the long run it might not flop beause someone has to wake up and stop the insanity. Besides a console as strong as the xbox brand will not be wiped out in one generation alone no matter how hard Microsoft tries to get that achievement.

But yes I agree with you. I want the thing to flop just to stop future hardware makers and publishers from making the same DRM and “Internet always On” mistakes. As it stands now, it is a joke.

    Ah, man.

My wife and I were looking at cheaper baby formula and using cloth nappies for like six months to finance the Xbox One. Man, will we be disappointed now! So what now? So this really puts a crimp on the plans, right? (Before i get lambasted, I am a responsible man in his thirties who would never, ever, comprise care and love for another human being, let alone my child to be)

Ah, millennium Shrimp and Bug`rup! Is that a duck on your head?

I am not sure about most other people, but this news does not really effect me. But it may result in us actually buying one, when we can see the reviews of other people actually using and see the actual in-game effect. Plus, the beta-testers (North America) might just convince MS to drop a lot of the fun and silly ideas they seem bent on.

So, this could be win all the way.

No market which is profitable can afford to be ignored by any company. SA in relative terms is the gaming capital of Africa. Which makes this approach by MS even more perplexing. Why would you WANT to deliberately prevent your product from being sold in a profitable market – for a profit. Microsoft’s cost of doing business in gaming SA doesn’t exceed their profit from those same gamers and MBA 101 tells you if you can make money off of something even if its a small amount, do it, because not doing it is just plain stupid… I’m beginning to think the picture somebody posted on LG a few days ago of the MS board meetings being held by a bunch of chimpanzee’s is correct, but even chimps are not that stupid!!!

Its more complex than that, they probly want to ensure there is enough stock for their main markets, so rather have plenty of stock for Europe, America ect at lauch and have a successful launch in key markets, than try launch everywhere at once and have shortages and kids screaming at them for no stock.

There’s a simple explanation for this. They probably determined that the minority of 360 owners in this country have stable connections, or keep their consoles online regularly.

This might just be what Sony needs to stop it from being split up and Microsoft is actually trying to help them. Lets all support Microsoft’s efforts by buying the PS4 and ignore the Xbox One. What other company will go out of their way to help a competitor like this. Congrats Microsoft on your generosity. I think Sony will send you guys a bunch of flowers and a thank you card.

This is the only thing that explains Microsoft’s stupidity alternatively Microsoft execs are just idiots.

This is really sad, and I feel bad for the Xbros who are still clinging to this console with the idea that MS know what they’re doing, so the TV features or online functionality will completely justify all of this. The TV aspect is a gimmick, and not an evolution of the medium. The online features alone do not justify the business practices and consumer abuse. If you really hate Sony, get a WiiU, or better yet, upgrade your PC. Most of the best exclusives this gen are on PC also, or will be sooner or later. This is the PS4 or PC generation.

I want to know, if you have a US or UK XBL account, will that then work? I understand there won’t be region-locking, but I was just curious. But even if it works with an imported console, I take it there won’t be any games available, as the console won’t in official in SA. Is that right?

Anyone else thinking that Microsoft is trying to sink their own gaming division? Surely no company can be this dof! We all know Africa isn’t a gaming powerhouse, but here in South Africa, there’s a dedicated gaming following. To not even allow people to import games, or to not allow collectors to import and play their imported games, is low. It’s… LOOOOOOWWW!!

If we still have South Africans defending this abortion of a console, then they must be paid employees from Microsoft SA.

I seriously think this as well. I have a theory there’s some sort of internal power struggle at MS. What with XNA being discontinued, the confusion around DirectX, the weird decisions and then flip flops with some of the features in VS 2012 and now this XBone palava I really think there’s some weird shit going on at MS with regards to the gaming/dev sections.

They released so late because they didn’t have the infrastructure in place to implement Live worldwide at once AND they thought the SA market was low priority. They should know now how many consumers are in SA, and I can only assume that SA has a lower yield of online consoles which would make launching here early a waste for them.

IIRC Live launched in SA years later, not months. 2010, I think.

I don’t think it will though, there is a lot of positivity surrounding the console from people who aren’t 100% clued up on how it works.

But I cannot see myself getting a XBox 1. Even if one is given to me. Just to much slep to go through to play a game.
