The Xbox One won’t work if you import it early

Mattrick

As you probably already know by now, Microsoft’s Xbox One will not be available in South Africa when it launches in much of the rest of the world in November this year. It’s home to some really great games (like Dead Rising 3, which is one of my top games from E3) – which has some planning to import the console before its local launch. Unfortunately, that might not be a good plan.

It seems that the new Xbox One, which has Xbox Live and that goddamned nearly always online DRM nonsense so intrinsically interwoven in to it won’t work at all in regions where the console is unavailable. At launch, the list of countries where it will work is not especially large. Here are the countries that will get support at launch, according to a disclaimer on the Xbox One site.

Australia
Austria
Belgium
Brazil
Canada
Denmark
Finland
France
Germany
Ireland
Italy
Mexico
Netherlands
New Zealand
Norway
Russia
Spain
Sweden
Switzerland
United Kingdom
United States

“Xbox One games are for activation and distribution only in specified geographic regions. See game package and/or retailer product information, for each game’s specific geographic regions,” says the disclaimer.

What that means is that the system will actively block you from activating games if you fall without the supported territories. And if you take a look at those regions on Microsoft’s own map detailing said regions, we don’t even feature. At all.

xboxregions

You might think I was jumping to conclusions based on semantics – but the lock has  was confirmed by Xbox support.

xbonereqqdj

It’s a bit of a slap in the face to the local Xbox 360 die-hards, who imported that console well before local launch – and were in fact pivotal in getting the system launched here in the first place. So yeah – even if you wanted to get the Xbox One before everybody else (and by all accounts, you don’t) you wouldn’t be able to use it. Sure , there are probably ways around this silly geo-fencing, but you shouldn’t have to jump through hoops just to play video games.

Honestly, the way this is all going, I’m not even sure it’s worth Microsoft even launching the thing here. And that’s bad for everyone. But it’s ok. You could always just get an Xbox 360.

Thanks, neoGAF

Microsoft…… The gift that keeps on giving!!!

    • X1 will Dominate

Well for those who want an X1, this doesn’t matter as we luckily are covered :)

      • Jonah Cash

How are you covered? I really don’t think this thing will see SA for quite some time!! So will you wait a year? I’m still on the fence when it comes to whether I will buy a next gen console before Christmas 2014, but MS has pissed me off so much that I want to buy a PS4 just to make my money talk for me!!!

        • Argentil

If Asia is announced as an estimated November 2014, we will probably be even lower priority.

          • Jonah Cash

Hahahaha!! They really see us as part of Africa!! The guys in SA fighting for them really need to wake up and smell the roses, they don’t give a shit about you!! You are nothing to them, they want to own America and they see that as big enough a market share for them… And I have owned a Xbox 360 from 2004, and only bought a PS3 last year…

          • Argentil

Well, we can only hope that, seeing as they haven’t said anything about Japan, and that they have stressed how important that market is to them, maybe they have a few countries pending announcement for early next year, but haven’t pegged a timeframe as yet.

        • X1 will Dominate

Because Im not from the SA…
So yes I will be able to get it on launch date.
The only reason not all regions are available from launch date is because they want to have a smooth launch without any technical issues and places where there is good internet reception.
Saying that MS pisses on ya’ll is just bullshit, they made some policies to give the consumer better experience. I give a flying crap about I have to connect, I am always connected (whenever I can) as much as possible, and its fine for me that I can lend my game once to a friend, and then even do it digitally so I dont have to meet him with a physical disc.
Ofc. there are some restrictions but those are to make better open-world games with more living persistent worlds, people just think MS are doing this cause they want to, they are doing this to make a greater experience..
And pls whoever is reading this, if u dont believe me then dont, just dont pull all that Go Stick it Up Microsofts Ass bullshit pleasee!.

          • rennos

“I can lend my game once to a friend, and then even do it digitally so I dont have to meet him with a physical disc”………….i dont think u understand.. you will NOT be able to Play second hand games.

And MS is doing this for MONEY!! Not to “make a greater experience”

          • http://www.codescrawls.co.za/ Edwin le Roux

            Listen to this dude.

X1 is designed for the privileged. For the top countries where internet is common factor in everyday life.

It is our own decision that we life where we life. It is our decision to be born where we are born. Its the same as hungry children in the rest of Africa. If they are hungry why don’t they just move somewhere where there is food.

Same as why don’t we just get better internet. It is so easy.

PS. I which there was something like a sarcastic font. Cause I’m afraid some ppl might take me seriously.

On the note of murica. Think there is more money for them there. As we don’t buy any FNL games here.

        • X1 will Dominate

Not to talk about that I better like playing multiplayer/online, which the X1 is almost handmade cutout and designed to do. Nothing wrong with the PS4, but its cloud service and architecture isn’t designed as good for multiplayer gaming as the X1. And to play multiplayer you gotta have internet, so it all adds up for me :)

          • Ultimo_Cleric N7

Lucky you. Us RSA plebs are going to have to wait a very VERY long time. Hence why PS4 is looking more and more like an option for us.

          • rennos

Lol.. please do some research before you make such statements..hahaha

  • Martin du preez

    Die hard South African Xbots be all like;

    • Mossel

      hahaha!

    • Argentil

1 downvote from our zealous troll I can only imagine.

  • Hammersteyn

They would want to wait? What does that even mean? If you wait till it’s available in your country do you get a surprise?

Typical US. Still thinks most of Africa doesn’t even have electricity if that map is anything to go by.

    • LordCaptainAwesomeness

      Yes…..

    • Rinceyouropinion

We have electricity, it’s a stable internet we do not. Perhaps they know it…

      • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

With Eskom I wouldn’t say our electricity is very stable either 😛

        • Rinceyouropinion

Oh it can be… Just give them 35%MOAR MONEY each year! And to think my granddad helped establish them. Rolling in his flipping grave

        • Hammersteyn

          LOL

        • Brady miaau

compared to the rest of Africa?

I have not had a power failure at my house for about a year and the last one was a very short time, say 18:00 to 20:00.

          Lagos, in particular.

          • Johan du Preez

So how is your internet in lagos what speeds are you getting ?

        • Argentil

I wonder if handheld systems sell better in markets with less reliable infrastructure. When compared to consoles or pcs, I mean.

          • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

Would be interesting to see the stats on that

  • Johann

I wouldn’t be surprised if they never even release the damn thing here. Seeing as how US of A once stated that Piracy in Africa is too rampant.

    • Hammersteyn

But Russia gets a release O_O

      • LordCaptainAwesomeness

Would you Tell Putin he cannot get a XBONE?

Are you crazy? That guy rides wild bears in the outdoors like it has a horse.

Haha, agreed! And would judo/karate your arse in a heartbeat!

          • LordCaptainAwesomeness

Hell even Chuck Norris goes to bed in Putin Pajamas

          • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

Did you see when Putin was in South Africa, Jacob gave him the keys to Nkandla (Jacob went to stay with friends in the neighbouring village). You don’t mess with Putin. He rides bears!

        • Ultimo_Cleric N7

I hear he once liquified a man’s liver just by staring at him…..

          • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

When Chuck Norris makes love to a woman, she says “Putin… Putin”

      • Argentil

I get the logic behind the Russia launch. Russia are a massive market. If they can convince people to buy the console, and they are confident that their piracy measures are foolproof (which they are), then Russia could be good for Microsoft. That said, I don’t think it will work out that way. Someone will crack the console soon after release. I doubt Russia’s internet is in the top 20 worldwide.

    • http://www.facebook.com/pages/Wesley-Fick/184346154999538 Wesley Fick

But this also completely ignores the Japanese and Chinese, who almost exclusively rely on Microsoft software to get things done because of better Mandarin and Japanese font support. And the Asia launch only happens in LATE 2014.

  • Uberutang

I was wondering earlier this year if it will even release here…now it seems it may…but who would want one?

All games will be server hosted. Including COD. That means no more locals only. So unless the setup servers in Jozi and Cape Town , cod will be a lagfest of note. So there goes the ‘but what about cod esports argument.

    • Hammersteyn

Like I said. All their games are essentially running as Diablo3 and Simcity does on PC

      • LordCaptainAwesomeness

        You Mean not?

        • Hammersteyn

Well both are on PC but Simcity and Diablo 3 does not need DRM to play.

          • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

You missed the joke. I think @LordCaptainAwesomeness:disqus meant the games don’t run because error37 and all that

  • matthurstrsa

But its releasing in Brazil and not here?! Why would you want to PUNISH early adopters?

    • Trevor Davies

But we’re not on the list of punishable early adopters 😉

  • Rinceyouropinion

FOXHOUND! where are you?! Screw you MS. Totally destroyed your good rep with me.

    • Hammersteyn

Yeah, I would like to see him try and convince us to even consider buying XBOX One.

      • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

He’d probably say something along the lines of “Just the lower class whiners who known nothing about anything will moan because anyone who wants this will know how to spoof an IP”

or something like that just with a lot more grammatical errors and all that

        • Hammersteyn

He does seem like a one handed typist……

          • Rinceyouropinion

Ya, his other hand is so far up his arse hes rubbing his nose.

        • Trevor Davies

            Haha! Well done!

        • Ultimo_Cleric N7

Geez I lost my temper yesterday after I saw that.. wow. What a clown.

      • Rinceyouropinion

Africa has a billion people with crap access to the internet (via non cellphone means) and MS just cut them all . What part of anything they are doing makes sense to us? I don’t mean US as in the blind fanboys like foxhound and foxone, I’m talking about us adults who can logically think…

        • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

Apparently, emerging markets are not in their sights. The funny thing is, African economies have seen immense growth in the last few years (excluding South Africa of course, we’re currently the lame son of Africa). That generally means a growing middle class, and with a rise in the middle class comes the desire to own luxury goods.

Even if it’s only 10% of Africa’s billion that crosses that economic divide, that’s still 100 million people. Now given that the vast majority of Africa’s population is between the ages of 0 – 25, that’s essentially your prime gaming demographic.

Any company that ignores such a huge number of possible consumers is retarded. There I said it, Microsoft is retarded.

          • Rinceyouropinion

Absolutely. I am a Communications Officer for a very large NGO in Africa, and I know what you say is true. Nigeria for example (Please send monies to mine account and you will win R1trillion) has seen a huge growth in cellphone usage in the past 5 years. China knows what the emerging market is like in Africa which is why they are trying to get their greedy paws on everything! Microsoft? Yeah, soft in the HEAD.

Number 1 on the MS Top 40 Music Hits

  • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

    Words have escaped me.

    So let’s recap:
    1) You need to be online once every 24hours or you get locked out of all games.
    2) You cannot resell your disks as you please. You must use the system that Microsoft has built in to its own system therefore cutting out the local game distributers completely.
    3) Now you cannot play with the bloody thing if it isn’t released in your country yet?

So let’s look at it this way:
    1) So only those who have proper internet. Most of the gaming world cut out
    2) Trying to destroy brick and mortar local game shops. Again, less sales
    3) again, cutting out vast numbers of gamers and again, cutting out sales.

Are they trying to sell the least amount of consoles possible? What are they even thinking!?

    • http://www.twitter.com/WobblyOnion Exalted Overlord Geoffrey Tim

They felt sorry for Nintendo and the Wii U. 😀

      • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

        Bwhahahahahaha

      • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

Nintenty is looking lakker good though. Really excited now for a WiiU..

        • Argentil

What did you think of Nintendo’s E3 Direct? Smash Bros. and Mario Kart were very well received, but no one asked for another Donkey Kong. Also, Ubisoft’s Yves Guillemot said that they will not develop WiiU exclusives until hardware sales are up.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

I was quite excited for it all, especially Monolith’s new game. plus windwaker looks awesome and am very excited to to see when they finally release a new Zelda. I still feel bad for them but I think they getting back on track now and now’s the perfect time to pump out games. when Xbox is failing then the best thing to do is go ps4 and WiiU, which is what I will be doing. What was your take

          • Argentil

Personally, I will be going PS4 & PC (+PSVita), this is the best generation to own a PC. I almost bought a WiiU, thinking Nintendo would amaze at E3. I just missed out on the R999 deals.
That said, I wasn’t impressed with their overall showing, but Mario Kart 8 looks fantastic. That was a smart choice to develop, they really pulled it off.
Windwaker was detailed a bit more and looked beautiful, but it wasn’t new.

Overall, I think they might have more to speak of at TGS.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

They didn’t have a strong showing but it did enough to get me excited. I tend to always lean towards Ninty because they always have a wide range of Jrpg’s which is my favorite genre. but agreed, Gonna be a good Generation for PC … but alas, my wallet will never hold enough money :(

          • Argentil

Ja, I will agree there. In the last 3 years, Nintendo seem to have picked up the JRPG torch that Microsoft dropped.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

What ever happened though there hey…So sad, I remember when 360 launched with Blue Dragon I was like hellz yeah, Next gen JRPGS, but that was a short lived excitement. But hey, there is a fair share of JRPG’s on 360 that I really enjoyed

          • Argentil

They had a lot of support from Mistwalker, who seem to be working on Mobile games at the moment. Not 100% sure though.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

Yeah they are focusing on smaller titles for now, hopefully they will get back to AAA games, because hot damn are they good

          • Argentil

I wonder if the Tales of series will go multiplatform again. They have been dominating on PS3 lately.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

Yeah, really excited for Xillia. Hideo Baba isn’t going next gen anytime soon though

      • Vampyre Squirrel

Wii U sales are probably going to go through the roof because of this… lets hope everyone that doesn’t get a PS4 gets a Wii U.

MS is trying to encourage literacy in 3rd world countries by getting people to read a book instead of playing games :/

        • Trevor Davies

          No, no I didn’t :(

  • Reboot

I imported the XB360 when it was launched, and it was absolutely great being able to play before the rest of SA.

But you now what.. MicroLimp can keep their XBone. I will stick to my XB 360 for now and later move to the PS4.

    • e1ace

What happened when/if the launch console failed? How did the warranty work?

      • Reboot

Some of the people I knew got the RRD and those consoles were replaced without any hassles. The warranty is still valid even though I am in a different continent then where it was purchased.

        • e1ace

Yeah but who did they return the console to? Who paid for shipping? My understanding is that since there would be no local distributor yet, the customer will pay for shipping back to the company where you purchased it from.

  • Umar Kiiroi Senk?
    • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

      Whahahahahaha!

    • Hammersteyn

Still find the lack of seat belts with all that technology hilarious.

  • CaptainNemo42

    Header advert banner win!

  • e1ace

In other news – You can purchase and ship the console from America to South Africa for $480 total. That includes taxes and shipping and the PS4 of course!

    • Brady miaau

      So why pre-order in SA?

Customs duties? As in, when it arrives at the local airport, you get a phone call and a letter asking for amount X, for SA Customs.

That has caught me out once or twice, buy a piece of electronics from Europe and end up paying, say, R300 more to get it released from customs.

      • e1ace

Well one issue is that Amazon have sold out of ‘launch day’ consoles. But no one is sure how many more launch consoles they will get.

Second issue is warranty. It’s risky getting launch consoles because of potential issues (RROD). Amazon require you to send the console back at your own cost – which might not be worth the risk.

        • silverscorpio

Another reason why the Xbox One is very scary. That RROD fried my Xbox 360 within 1 year. Microsoft always had inferior quality products when it came to the quality of hardware. No problem with my ps3

          • e1ace

I think with the fact that the new consoles are x86 and aren’t really new techs with new architecture and new factories that this console generation should be somewhat problem free.

          • Argentil

I did hear that the eSRAM they are using is causing overheating problems. There were even rumours of lowering performance to fix it.

          • e1ace

The eSRAM was causing yield problems in the die (or something like that). But @MajorNelson ‘confirmed’ that this was false.

          • Argentil

I assume you put apostrophes around confirmed BECAUSE it’s Major Nelson, right? 😛

          • e1ace

            Exactly.

He’s not really giving concrete info there. Ignoring the comment below querying the actual clock speeds of the GPU.

          • silverscorpio

Yes, I have considered that as well but you must admit with a potential R 6 500-00 investment it is a very scary thought considering that it has happened in the past even though the process was different. Microsoft has said that there will be no problems this time but if you take into account that they do not know if they are coming or going, I am taking it with a pinch of salt. Besides this thing will have a whole new version of the RROD that can cry havok on any entertainment.

    • http://www.facebook.com/lj.roos LJ Roos

OK sure, I could do that, I know im going to sound like a d**s now, but I want to support the local shops, even though their owners probably chill in Strand and drink Klippies Premium, I think it’s important to support my local supply chain no matter what.

    • Brady miaau

When I was in the states in 1987, a lot of people thought South Africa was a region in Africa, the concept of actual countries escaped them. And asked if we are using the food aid wisely. And did not believe that we grew our own vegetables. Seriously.

Also, we were racist, instantly, as being White and from South Africa to people with a little bit more knowledge. Say 1 or 2 out of the 20 or so people we spoke to for more than a few minutes.

      • Vampyre Squirrel

In 1999 I had someone in the states believe that I was chatting from the back of my Elephant on top of a hill to get signal for my satellite internet connection….

      • HvR

Well my experience is it depends “the type of people” you speak to, if you talk to properly educated people who works in multi-nationals (at least tech based multi-nationals and universities knows where South Africa is and have worked/talked/consulted with South Africans.

        • Brady miaau

Now, yes, I will agree with you. Have worked with several American consultants and so forth, that are very educated and liberal. A bit arrogant about America and its place in the world, but that is to be expected.

Also worked with ones that are not very “outward looking” from their narrow world view.

  • Tbone187

I seriously hope this console flops…Why makes MS think the console is sooo great that people should bend over backwards to have the privilege of having one…It’s a joke really…

    • Zubayr Bhyat

Far as I remember XBL was slow to come here too. I’m adopting the wait and see approach but am leaning very much to the PS4 side.

      • Vampyre Squirrel

XBL was extremely slow on getting to SA, and I still can’t get all the arcade games I’ve seen that I want on the US and UK XBL’s :(

    • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

Actually I think you just hit the nail on the head.

They are making it seem to be a privilege to have one. What happens the moment you put something out of someone’s reach and make it seem the best thing in the world? Like a Ferrari for example? Everyone now suddenly wants one and people will do their utmost to get one.

Bad example, but I think it is the type of marketing they are aiming for.

      • Brady miaau

        yip

        • Brady miaau

and is uncomfortable to drive, bad for the back? (So I understand)

    • silverscorpio

In the long run it might not flop beause someone has to wake up and stop the insanity. Besides a console as strong as the xbox brand will not be wiped out in one generation alone no matter how hard Microsoft tries to get that achievement.

But yes I agree with you. I want the thing to flop just to stop future hardware makers and publishers from making the same DRM and “Internet always On” mistakes. As it stands now, it is a joke.

  • Brady miaau

    Ah, man.

My wife and I were looking at cheaper baby formula and using cloth nappies for like six months to finance the Xbox One. Man, will we be disappointed now! So what now? So this really puts a crimp on the plans, right? (Before i get lambasted, I am a responsible man in his thirties who would never, ever, comprise care and love for another human being, let alone my child to be)

Ah, millennium Shrimp and Bug`rup! Is that a duck on your head?

I am not sure about most other people, but this news does not really effect me. But it may result in us actually buying one, when we can see the reviews of other people actually using and see the actual in-game effect. Plus, the beta-testers (North America) might just convince MS to drop a lot of the fun and silly ideas they seem bent on.

So, this could be win all the way.

You are stupid to purchase any product without local support. Absolute hot air over nothing this is.

Gamers are foolish though, they’ll still purchase the damned thing and phone MS for support when Kinect no answer back……. *is this thing on?*

Just use a free VPN / DNS routings setup behind your xbox – there are many out there that will easily make it think its not in SA…

I think the point being driven across is that people shouldn’t be forced to jump through hoops. While you can spoof your IP and “fake” your location it’s not really up everyone’s alley or capability to do so.

  • DadGamer

Seriously, as I said in another comment this week, Microsoft just handed the SA market (among others) to sony on a golden platter.

    • Deano

As bad as it is, SA is such a small market for MS I dont really think it worries them one bit.
I think they launching in all the countries that matter to their bank account and to hell with the rest of us.

      • Double-O-Six and a half

No market which is profitable can afford to be ignored by any company. SA in relative terms is the gaming capital of Africa. Which makes this approach by MS even more perplexing. Why would you WANT to deliberately prevent your product from being sold in a profitable market – for a profit. Microsoft’s cost of doing business in gaming SA doesn’t exceed their profit from those same gamers and MBA 101 tells you if you can make money off of something even if its a small amount, do it, because not doing it is just plain stupid… I’m beginning to think the picture somebody posted on LG a few days ago of the MS board meetings being held by a bunch of chimpanzee’s is correct, but even chimps are not that stupid!!!

        • Deano

Its more complex than that, they probly want to ensure there is enough stock for their main markets, so rather have plenty of stock for Europe, America ect at lauch and have a successful launch in key markets, than try launch everywhere at once and have shortages and kids screaming at them for no stock.

        • Argentil

There’s a simple explanation for this. They probably determined that the minority of 360 owners in this country have stable connections, or keep their consoles online regularly.

Bill Gates needs to definitely put his dogs on a leash, wait anther fews years before Xbox One is approved for your country in the mean time while you waiting my advise suck it & just buy a gamer’s dream console the PS4, 😉

What … some people still consider the One as an option after everything we heard this week . A less powerful console that costs more. You have to be a serious fan of MS to get one.

  • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

But hey….we get killer instinct right and it’s free to play…right…..*Bitch Slap*! WRONG! killer Instinct comes with one character…yes on Xbox One you get ONE character!

    • Ultimo_Cleric N7

Wow Really!?!?! a Whole Character….Oh the Microsoft Overlords have been so generous!

      • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

One whole character and you have to pay for more …. I guess they being generous

  • http://xelusprime.wix.com/ettiennev Xelus

To be honest, I’m glad to see that sh** doesn’t get released here yet. We’re already importing enough left overs from other countries, we don’t need another one on the pile. >_>

  • silverscorpio

You know what. Microsoft is not that bad. They are trying to help Sony recover from their finincial concerns. This might just be what Sony needs to stop it from being split up and Microsoft is actually trying to help them. Lets all support Microsoft’s efforts by buying the PS4 and ignore the Xbox One. What other company will go out of their way to help a competitor like this. Congrats Microsoft on your generosity. I think Sony will send you guys a bunch of flowers and a thank you card.

This is the only thing that explains Microsoft’s stupidity alternatively Microsoft execs are just idiots.

    • Brady miaau

      Savannah?

  • Ultimo_Cleric N7

Wow…..just wow. What a bunch of muppets. Really, MS must have not even THOUGHT about chatting to gamers in the market to check their concerms before deciding on this.

  • http://lazygamer.net/ OVG

AFRICA? HAS ELECTRICITY? But I thought…

    • silverscorpio

Americans still think we have wild animals on our airport runways and we live in straw huts. I can remember when the Backstreet Boys visited South Africa long ago they thought that they would see wild animals waliking in our cities. Now Microsoft obvioulsly thinks the same.

    New update

    • Argentil

This is really sad, and I feel bad for the Xbros who are still clinging to this console with the idea that MS know what they’re doing, so the TV features or online functionality will completely justify all of this. The TV aspect is a gimmick, and not an evolution of the medium. The online features alone do not justify the business practices and consumer abuse. If you really hate Sony, get a WiiU, or better yet, upgrade your PC. Most of the best exclusives this gen are on PC also, or will be sooner or later. This is the PS4 or PC generation.

  • http://lazygamer.net/ OVG

I thought some ass muppet from MicroBS just stated that JAPAN is going to be on the top of the list

  • http://www.itnewsafrica.com/ Charlie Fripp

I want to know, if you have a US or UK XBL account, will that then work? I understand there won’t be region-locking, but I was just curious. But even if it works with an imported console, I take it there won’t be any games available, as the console won’t in official in SA. Is that right?

    • Argentil

Supposedly; you will not be able to verify games online if you are not in the supported countries. There is a ping check of some sort.

  • Tidycpc

I will get the PS4 when it release here, and if/when the xbox gets released here will pick that up aswell.

  • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

Anyone else thinking that Microsoft is trying to sink their own gaming division? Surely no company can be this dof! We all know Africa isn’t a gaming powerhouse, but here in South Africa, there’s a dedicated gaming following. To not even allow people to import games, or to not allow collectors to import and play their imported games, is low. It’s… LOOOOOOWWW!!

If we still have South Africans defending this abortion of a console, then they must be paid employees from Microsoft SA.

    • Nicholas Rowan

I seriously think this as well. I have a theory there’s some sort of internal power struggle at MS. What with XNA being discontinued, the confusion around DirectX, the weird decisions and then flip flops with some of the features in VS 2012 and now this XBone palava I really think there’s some weird shit going on at MS with regards to the gaming/dev sections.

      • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

I can actually see Don Mattrick wielding his favourite jacket against Jabba Balmer….

  • Smuroh

I dont think everyone realizes that the 360 was the same in SA came out months after the launch in the rest of the world, i dont think its MS this time i think its our rather retarded rating system.

    • Argentil

They released so late because they didn’t have the infrastructure in place to implement Live worldwide at once AND they thought the SA market was low priority. They should know now how many consumers are in SA, and I can only assume that SA has a lower yield of online consoles which would make launching here early a waste for them.

IIRC Live launched in SA years later, not months. 2010, I think.

  • RMKennySA

I think this is a good thing. I had a lot of friends with 360’s and it screwed up multilayer. If South Africans can all just stick to the damn same console! (Preferably may we all stick to ps4. My pocket would be so happy)

  • Happy Hamster

Ok i actually got a answer on my tweet as to why is SA not amoungst the 21 Country story and there reply is *Drum Roll Please*

    • Argentil

“Why would you want to live there?”

  • Thats_how_I_Troll

This lets me thinks that the MS product we will get will be different to the 1st one to the 21 countries… All those countries have good internet solutions… Making me think once again, the second wave of countries will be different to the first wave of countries… Maybe a more relaxed approach to DRM and Internet connection, or even an offline mode… Best we will have to wait and see…

    • Argentil

If sales of the console are devastatingly bad, then yes. Only then would they loosen the noose. You better hope it does poorly in the first 21 countries if you want this to happen.
I don’t think it will though, there is a lot of positivity surrounding the console from people who aren’t 100% clued up on how it works.

  • Scratchy

You know, I was starting to consider the xbone. Always on isn’t such a big deal if you think about it and I can live with the used games thing. No problems. But now this? It’s like MS doesn’t want anyone to buy their console and I certainly am not. If the PS4 is available first in SA, that’s what I’ll be getting. End of.

Thanks Microsoft for caring… you shit flavoured cock lollipop

  • Aussious

Don Mattrick is a real dush, this guy sat idly by as Spielberg and Lucas insulted gaming and the audience that plays video games. Doubt that either Spielberg or Lucas have ever picked up a controller and neither has Don apparently.
    http://www.fangirlconfessions.com/lucas-spielberg-insult-video-games/

  • http://www.codescrawls.co.za/ Edwin le Roux

First and foremost I’m a PC gamer. But I do have a 360. And I love it. I love the controller. So much more than the PS3 controller. Don’t like the PS controller that much. Doesn’t fit nicely into my hands.

But I cannot see myself getting a XBox 1. Even if one is given to me. Just to much slep to go through to play a game.

As I am a PC gamer. Im not used to paying R600+ for a game. So I usually buy second hand, or borrow from friends.
