Witcher-3

Are you enjoying a game, but feeling like there’s something missing, a hole that needs to be filled? Well good news guy, because nothing fills that void better than money. Especially if you’re in need of attack pants. The Witcher 3 is a game that could easily be mined for extra coin. But when it arrives next year, you’ll be getting a ton of content for free instead.

16 pieces of DLC to be exact. The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt will release it’s first two DLC packs on February 25, which includes the Temerian Armor Set (horse armor included) and a Beard and Hairstyle Set for Geralt, the titular Witcher of the game. From that point on, a DLC bundle of two more pieces of content will arrive every week for free as well.

The DLC will also be available regardless of when the game is bought pre or post launch.

Witcher DLC

“We love games. We love collecting them, playing them, and everything connected to that experience,” co-founder and Joint CEO of CD Projekt RED Marcin Iwinski said in an open letter that I’m just copying and pasting below for you to peruse.

Every time we reach out for a new release, we expect to be taken care of. We expect support if we encounter any problems, we love updates constantly improving the experience, and we feel really special when we receive free content that gives us more than we initially paid for. It doesn’t have to be huge, it can be an awesome skin for a character, or an extra sword, or armor.

Unfortunately this treatment is quite rare these days. As gamers, we nowadays have to hold on tight to our wallets, as surprisingly right after release, lots of tiny pieces of tempting content materialize with a steep price tag attached. Haven’t we just paid a lot of cash for a brand new game?

As CD Projekt RED, we strongly believe this is not the way it should work and, with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, we have decided to do it differently. Cutting to the chase, everyone who buys Wild Hunt will receive 16 specially prepared DLCs absolutely for free, regardless of platform. You don’t have to pre-order, you don’t have to buy any special edition to get them — if you own a copy of Wild Hunt, they’re yours. This is our way of saying thank you for buying our game.

At least this time, when the game arrives you can indeed have amazing horse armour to look at. Without paying for it.

  1. I know many people adore RED but…I mean….these are things that could’ve been in the game….Just seems like releasing content for free to make them look good.It worked though, the internet is singing praises for these FREE items…Like….Sorry if I sound like a jerk, but beard and hairstyle set?….How does these things even count as DLC , seems like it should and can easily be in the main game….
Just seems like Marketing really. RED is really good at connecting with gamers

That is exactly how I feel. Its not a bad thing though, at least they are on our side. No one can say if its purely a marketing thing, but I do believe they are honest in there approach to their games. But this DLC just feels too much like a marketing thing

Remeber these CDPR dont have the capital or marketing EA and those have, they have to find a way to get on the market so they can at least get a return on the game, and i dont think the witcher 3 was cheap to make.

I disagree.. Witcher 3 has been marketed pretty heavily. Just as much as any EA game.

But do they have the capital that EA has, remember still alot of gamers class CDPR as an “Indie” developer, hence the heavy marketing.

Not judging them at all. I still respect them. Just merely airing what I think this DLC thing is, and it just feels like pure marketing to boost image

LOL NOTHING….I’m not saying anything is wrong…I’m merely stating, its all just marketing in relation to how everyone keeps praising them for being ALL about the gamers. Nothing is wrong though

I love good will like this free DLC, but it seems fake when it comes along with a press release that bangs on about what nice people they are. And they’ve done this 3 or 4 times now in the build up to this release.

I sort of get what you are saying about the banging on about what good guys they are, how different they are and all that.

Comes a point where to blow your own trumpet (strumpet? I digress) just looks silly. They are already at the point where a lot of people (some zealots) will push their cause for them, so all they need to is just release a short, factual statement and the good guy bit will spread from other sources.

Yip, but the point of the DLC I fully get, you simply cannot put everything into a first release of any product, time = money and development is extremely expensive. Start to factor in “lost opportunity cost” from potential sales and it gets even more so

    • Brady miaau

      November 7, 2014 at 08:42

Project and product development works like that in most companies. Ask most of the developers here “We will add feature X in a later, 2nd phase release”. Time to market vs time to develop

Same thing, surely, that CDPR are doing?

All of it should be there initially….not DLC. But thats not my point really. Its just that this is all Marketing. I know we all love them and stuffs, but, I PERSONALLY just feel its a bit of a ploy to play on the current state of the industry…NOTHING bad or wrong with it though.

You’re correct. Of course it is a ploy, they run a million dollar company and they need to keep it that way. It’s clever marketing and it is working. I agree it could’ve/should’ve been there initially. But comparing it to the other evils, this one is not that bad. I mean Activision charges you $2 for a skin for your SMG in CoD.

Quick question LG: If I come across a juicy news tidbit, and I wish to share it with my favorite group of gamers, isn’t it better to email you at LG with the details? Instead of posting a link in the comments and getting violated? Like by a certain ZA individual? Whose name might or might not start with an R? (I make joke!)

But seriously, is it better that way? If I was a journo then linking articles from other news sources in the comments of an article I wrote might just quite possibly be construed as, you know, a slap in the face as they say… Maybe?

Smart move, great marketing. Maybe this starts a chain reaction and other companies start doing the same. Just imagine…a world where people can buy games and know that the DLC will be free, in-app purchases have gone to shit and EA….well hopefully they have gone extinct.

Ok let me do a proper comment. It’s The Witcher 3 so I just have to.

CD Projekt RED is playing a good marketing game. I was thinking that Witcher news was going to hit a dry spell till Jan next year and oh boy did they surprise us all. 16 free DLC.

November is known for when big AAA games are released. Call of Duty paid season pass for shitty DLC and expensive shitty DLC. Ubisoft just love to DLC the shit out of their games and those DLC comes at a cost. EA – no comment. Ok I will make one comment about EA, Fuck EA.

So CD Projekt RED announcing 16 free DLC now, is just to remind us and to remind the big corps and to get good press for The Witcher 3 all over the world. The sentiment all over the world among gamers is good and happy.

Now if we look at what the DLC is going to do. 1st of the DLC is released the day after The Witcher 3 game is launched. If we just look at gaming media only. There will be leading up to launch press, launch day and review press, and guaranteed day after launch press and guaranteed press every week for 2 months following the launch of The WItcher 3.

And then the DLC will also help with the launch of Galaxy, CD Projekt’s distribution Client.

So to me it seems that CD Projekt RED is playing a really good game. CD Projekt RED is setting up the perfect launch for The Witcher 3 and post launch. I am seeing that this game is going to sell really well.

Don’t Support DRM. The Witcher 3 is coming.
