The Witcher 3 273

Most journalists and gamers love indies for their open responses to questions – hit them up on twitter and they will actually respond. Most AAA titles are far too big and part of the PR machine to do the same, but not The Witcher. Senior Game Designer at CD Projekt Red, Damien Monnier, was bored and naked in his Milan hotel room and decided to answer your most burning questions.

First up, let’s talk about the difference between PC and PS4. We’ve heard a lot about Xbox One, and the reason for that is probably exactly what you suspected.

Okay, so they can’t say much because of contracts, but we have nothing to worry about when it comes to The Witcher 3 on PS4. In fact, when asked which PC settings the PS4 version would be equivalent to, he replied saying probably high – he even goes so far as saying that he’s been known to confuse the PC and PS4 versions.

Of course, the reason it will be best on PC, and presumably better on PS4 than Xbox One, is because of how pretty the game looks. But that wasn’t the biggest technological hurdle that they had to overcome. Bonnier actually stated that it was all the unique NPCs doing their own things that used up a lot of thinking power.

As for the actual scale of the game, Monnier assured those asking questions that while it’s hard to say exactly how long the game is if you do all the side quests, it’s over 200 hours. Despite having cool combat of its own in the Witcher franchise, people asked about combat systems and got a rather cool insight into inspiration.

Finally, for those who are still wondering about Ciri, you will play as her in specific moments in her story. They aren’t all flashbacks, but they certainly might remind you of the flash:

I love that he took the time to answer the questions. The more I hear about the game, the more excited I get. I love that the game will be massive, with varied NPCs and quick responsive combat – particularly for Ciri. It’s sounding glorious and I can’t wait to get my hands on it.

I’m so scared that this game disappoints with the amount of hype we’re getting.. It’s like I’m getting flashbacks from ME 3 all over again…

By then Bioware was long gone over to the dark EA side.

CD Projekt Red deserves support. Support them. Even if the game sucks, you can sell it. It won’t suck. If you like stories and dialog. You will like The Witcher 3.

I have to be honest & say here that ME3 didn’t dissapoint me at all. I loved it, every second, even the original ending. It could have been “more”, certainly, but in the context of a continuing story I wasn’t too fussed. The Citadel DLC & expanded ending did a lot to build on what was originally released though, & made it better for the most part though, I’m happy to admit to that

Now, if ME4 *doesn’t* build on, and validate the ending of ME3? That’s when I’ll get annoyed……

Rage is not a story game. Rage is a shooting game. And I had fun shooting that ak47 and that shotgun and boomerang thing.

With Mass Effect I got tired of standing behind a box.

Nah not just that but Casey Hudson and Mac Walters both hyped ME3 too HELL!

Promised proper story archs for every supporting character, no way to beat the Reapers using conventional weapons, made it sound like “Priority Earth” was supposed to make the “Suicide Mission” look like a water gun fight ect ect ect… too many lies to mention…

We all know how devs over hype their products to make it sell better.. Just hope CD Red aren’t like the rest..

Knowing how I like to roam around and pretty much walk everywhere this will probably get closer to 300 for me. Not to mention replays.
Either way, I’ve got mine pre-ordered and now I cannot wait for it to be released.

          • Pariah

            March 30, 2015 at 11:58

Steam’s official policy is: “The minute you click download, the game is not returnable.” So when you buy, click cancel when it asks to install your game (which pops up automatically upon purchase.)

Either way, the huge price difference on Origin is what will get me to buy there, should I buy.

          • Spy Master Tokashi

            March 30, 2015 at 12:01

That makes Origin better than steam. Their policy is 24 hours after you started to play the game. I will have to read the whole policy to make 150% sure but that is what I have read.

Maybe one day it will be sold off say when Gaben decided to retire and even if they did run into problems I am sure that they would put in mitigation factors to ensure everyone gets their games once Steamworks has been removed from then

They say the side quests are well written and no fetch quests and side missions most of the time will tire up with the story. Even side quests can have a big outcome in the game. Consequences.

It’s the concept of shards. Quests keep being separated into pieces. It’s was horribly designed. Quests that could’ve been contained into 1 map was split into different pieces across multiple maps. It was artificial and felt unnatural at times.

was never a fan of custom weapons and armours etc.
i felt like the DLC/gotye filled in the gaps with the dragon bone bow and the other 2 or 3 armour packs.
i try to keep it as close to the vanilla game as possible, content wise atleast.

I agree. It’s off-putting. I have no desire to play any game that long. 1/10 of that is way more than enough. Anything longer surpasses my this-is-now-boring tolerance threshold. There are too many other great games out there that I’d miss out on if I have to dedicate that many hours to one single game. I’ll take a 300-page novel over a 3000-page one any day.

How can I possibly be the only one who’s positive about the 200 hours of gameplay?
The game is going to be a digital masterpiece and I’m looking forward to sinking that amount of hours into it. It’s not only about the quests and the story and the fighting. It’s about a living, breathing world that you get to be a part of.

Hmmm…. You see, it’s like golf, in a full length PGA tour weekend, the club touches the ball for a total of 13 seconds… the rest of the time is spent sight seeing, or chatting to your caddy or driving over pedestrians with a golf cart, or in the case of Tiger Woods…you know… It’s all about perceived enjoyment, if you enjoy 200 hrs of gameplay then you can do that, if you prefer 40 hrs of main story and not much else, well then that’s good too

That’s what good games are all about. Being a part of a different world and a different life.
I don’t want a 10 hour fun ride if I can instead immerse myself into something immense and instead of hunting a story or an end, enjoy the entire journey.

You see, this is where I also have to strike a balance, if I spent 200 hours in a game where everyone looks as if they were sculpted out of peanut butter, but I loved every moment of the story I’d not be dissapointed, where if they were greek gods/goddesses and I played through the story in 15 minutes, I’d want my money back… But here’s the catch, if that was the best 15 minutes I’ve ever experienced in a game (like it punched a whole in my groin bone) then I won’t mind it…

            I can agree with that.
A game like Valiant Hearts was quite short, but it left me so satisfied.
So I completely get your point, and it certainly depends on the game.
With open-world games like The Witcher though, I like to explore and roam. Otherwise they might as well have made it linear.

To put the 200 hours into perspective from what they have been saying.
If you follow the main quests you looking at 50 hours. I’m sure that includes some if not a lot of quick traveling.
The side quests should also give you about 50 hours. I’m sure quick travel is included in that.

So we looking at a 100 hours game. But the way I play games and how I rather choose to ride Roach and not use quick travel. I get side tracked really quickly. I have to go to every corner and pick up everything. So 100 hours of just fucking around is ever likely.

So 100 hours for quests and side quests and 100 hours for fucking around. Fucking around lol. There you have your 200 hours. And then after you played do it all again with different outcomes. If the story and dialog holds up and the small things don’t bug me. This might end being… You need a retail PC copy on your self even if you don’t have a PC. One day…

“He replied saying probably high – he even goes as far as saying that he’s been known to confuse the PC and PS4 versions.”

That really scares me about how the game will look on PC. It seems like instead of using each platform, PC, PS4, Xbox, to their limit, they instead decide to create an artificial parity between them. We’ve already seen a downgrade in the graphics, but CD Projekt keeps denying it. This could be one of the biggest disappointments this year, not just graphically, but also because it seems like the PR is hyping up the game to be something it’s not.
