A number of the previously rumoured features of the PlayStation 4 have come true. If there’s one bit of speculation that I’m rather happy hasn’t, it’s the rumour that Sony’s next console would block out used games. That’s not happening.

Questioned by Eurogamer over whether or not the PS4 would block used games, Sony’s president of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida denied reports

"Yes. That’s the general expectation by consumers," said Yoshida. "They purchase physical form, they want to use it everywhere, right? So that’s my expectation." he said, before stating that "Used games can play on PS4."

Great news (especially for retailers who deal in used games!) – but there are still a few unknowns; Yoshida was a little coy – and it could be that the PS4 will play used games, but might require a second licence to be purchased online beforehand.

Still, you will be able to buy and sell your second hand games – and in the console market, that’s important.

I will say this – if Microsoft decides to block used games, it’ll be game over for the Xbox.

I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.

This day is getting better and better and better.

Sony won’t charge for the 2nd hand games to be played, that is something the software developers must answer and will decide.

  • Sir Captain Rincethis

If Xbox do that, game over man indeed! I’ll be turning into a finely tuned, ‘yo mumma’ PS fanboy.

    • Deon Steyn

I imagine the average XBOX gamers facial expression looks like your pic today.

      • Sir Captain Rincethis

Haha! Indeed. Not sure I have enough fight in me for another console war. That being said, I bet MS will have something up their sleeve when they release their next console. I think the only thing to do, is to go on a rampage and rob a whole bunch of pensioners of their pensions, they are all old and close to dying, wasted money! I’ll buy both consoles and troll like a bastard :)

While I will always still stick to the Master PC race, I am definately buying a PS4 now. This rumor was one of the only things holding me back and now that its been debunked, I’m 90% in.
Just one question remains…..persistent internet activity required?

          • Deon Steyn

Maybe if you are using the cloud service, but with it being able to play used games and download games o the hard drive, I don’t think persistent internet activity will be a necessity. I wonder how big is the hard drive going to be ?

It’s only a war, if we let the kiddies turn it into one. We can talk like normal adults and discuss the pro’s and con’s of both machines when they’re launched. And discuss the merits of the exclusives on our machines. Doesn’t have to be open combat between the two, and it probably wouldn’t hurt to cut out the hate between PC and Console players.

Granted, there are dicks on either side…but neither side is full of dicks either lol.

          • Sir Captain Rincethis

Screw you man! Yo mamma Yeah, you heard me! You MAMA! And your sister, in the basement, together! With like, a sheep, and maybe some tape, and, ahhh, and a fan, with feathers, and rubbing alcohol! ;)

          • mornelithe

Heh….my Sister’s a black belt, and her husband’s her Sensai. By all means, go right ahead and deal with that fireball if you so desire. LOL

          • Sir Captain Rincethis

            Hahahah!

          • mornelithe

Hehe, no joke, and she’s not your typical martial arts student….if you mess with her, she doesn’t know how to turn the other cheek. She’s gonna mess you up. She and Brandon (her husband) were on a cruise to Puerto Rico (lucky $%#$) recently, and I don’t remember exactly what happened, but some woman was harassing her on their first day, and she ended up drilling her in the face. lol. But, she never got harassed again

          • Moestafa

Time to get her in MMA boy…

          • mornelithe

Haha, first off, I’m 33. Hardly a boy.

As far as my sister goes, she’s not rounded enough for MMA. She knows one discipline, but has no ground game, and no other secondary style. So, she’d be at a distinct disadvantage in that regard.

No one will block used games… Sigh, it’ll be a long, filled with stupid rumours, wait ’till May.

    • Sir Captain Rincethis

With you on this mate. I wouldn’t put it past MS for deliberately waiting for SONY to release this first, see the reaction, and act accordingly.

    Also Random though;
We should petition Sony for a high end SkU of the PS4 with backwards compatibility

  • Massacred

    This was Sony’s best
press conference in years. They focused on what the core gamers are looking for
    games! The new controller looks beautiful and added everything gamers wanted;
headphone jack, improved grip, sticks, d-pad, and triggers. (Aside from the share
and options buttons [seriously bring back start and select])

In fact the only thing that most
people I’ve talked to were disappointed in, was in regard’s to 3 games:

    Agent

    Final Fantasy Versus XIII

    The Last Guardian

  • Banana Jim

I’ll just say, what an amazing event. It’s like they learnt from their mistakes this last gen, and are taking the bull by the horns. Now, Microsoft just needs to put in a strong showing and nextgen is going to be one epic battle.

    • matthurstrsa

Just Dance 5 on Kinect 2 now sees your toes wiggle in glee as you shake dat booty. I can see the marketing already.

      • Banana Jim

NextBox is going to be Kinectastic :D

        • matthurstrsa

But really, it will be interesting to see what Microsoft’s next move is. Lots of pressure now!

          • Banana Jim

As unbelievable as it may sound, I’m actually rooting for the big M. And purely because SONY only pulled up their socks because Microsoft was such effective competition. The worst thing is when a company becomes complacent and arrogantly assumes that its fanbase is immaterial.

          • Rus74

Lets also hope Sony stays true to their comments, they have a history of changing things to the detriment of gamers. Their current PS4 features are very rich and interesting but would love to know more about possible 4K screen support, multiple screen support, and if the PS Move will still be an option.

    Yes!!!!!
