The Playstation 4 is going to cost how much?

SimpsonsSpit-Take

By now, we’re getting ready for a next generation where we can finally be accused of being Playstation fanboys for a change. Ha! Progress. I’ve got a credit card and I’m not afraid to use it, but even if this turns out to be RRP, then the Playstation 4 is going to be more expensive than I imagined.

Phoenix-Tech has what we can guesstimate is a very, very presumptive price on the Playstation 4, or Playsation 4 as they call it. Purchase it from them, and you’ll be parting with 6599 Randelas ($691/ £457) .

That’s a ton of cash, and pretty close to what the original Playstation 3 cost when it was launched several years ago on this side of globe. Of course, this could also be a case of jumping on the bandwagon and snagging in some easy first-time adopters.

It’s unclear yet if Sony plans to launch the PS4 in line with other market trends, much like Microsoft did with the premium and core Xbox 360 models, or Nintendo and the Deluxe and standard Wii U versions that were on offer last year.

It’s also uncertain if the Playstation 4 will launch with a tube of complimentary Vaseline, but until we hear from the suppliers, take this with a pinch of salt. Thanks to Uberutang for the links.

Indeed, we will most likely get another iteration and another cut some time next year, I wouldn’t be too worried, it is very rape-like though for Day one buyers

R6599 more than I am willing to spend 😛

Jokes aside, my own upgrade (for 5 year life, in case a console fanboy needs to troll) will be costing about R5k (MB+CPU+RAM+HDD)

But to each his own. I wonder how the OneBox will compare in pricing

The only thing relevant now is the PSU, case and GPU (7870OC)

I have 8GB, but its still DDR2 🙁 also tri-core AMD CPU. Faithful to the max! Has served me very well considering its been 5 years 🙂

Doing PROPER upgrade soon, that will last 5 years again

I’m currently running an i7 2nd generation, but my mobo went bang not long ago, and replaced it with a low level one… When I see what frames other are getting makes me realise i need an overhaul.
How is that GPU? I was eyeing it out the other day.

Its beyond epic. Quite large though, but it runs quiet, runs cool.

Providing the rest of my tech is 5yo, I can put pretty much every game on at the very least High, and most on Ultra.

I got it for a good deal as well, also sold and paid for by an iPad I won 🙂

I will not submit to a console that forces me to pay extra for a second hand game!! I trade in old games to fund the new ones, so ONE is not viable for me!! Otherwise I would be able to buy maybe like two new games a year, and that is not worth it for me. I might have to return to my PC roots then….

For the xbox take off R1000, since they are going to ride you with mandatory Xbox live R50 to R150 a month.

    Eina.

I’d rather spend that cash on my PC. Plug in the newly released 780 for that price and my PC would would fly.

This is why I just can’t get myself in to console gaming. It’s just too expensive to get in to and then maintain (in regards to game prices on consoles which all add up over time). It’s a pitty really because I honestly would enjoy having a console.

Really? My last PC lasted 8 years and I didn’t have to replace much. In fact I think I changed my GFX card twice. Both times due to hardware failure.

No differant to someone needing to replace their console when it red-rings or whatever it is that consoles do.

The thing is it all actually evens out to the same price at the end of the day over a 8-10 year cycle.

You really shouldn’t need to be heaving out a lot of cash to maintain a PC. If you are then either you are overclocking too much 😛 or you have seriousbad luck with hardware.

Nah just upgrades…last upgrade was core2duo to i7…and hence new motherboard, RAM, case, GCard…all together cost more than double the price of a console.

also looking at your comment…that GTX780 by itself costs about R2k more than this rumored PS4 price not even looking at the other parts for a pc

My upgrade almost 2 years ago was from an AMD Athlon 64bit single core 3200+ with a GeForce 9600 in it. That PC served me well.

My upgrade cost me only 9k in total and will last a good while before needing to be replaced.

The mistake people make is to think that a PC must be able to run a game at max at all times. This isn’t really needed. Sure it’s nice but not a necessity.

My PC is a i7-2600 with a GTX560Ti in it and it will last another 8 years (barring any hardware failures) with maybe needing to put in another mid range card in 3 years or so when the GFX card really can’t anymore.

And anyone who says that I need better because the games can look better… Well even on medium spec games still look better than console counterparts so I still feel my money I spent was well worth it.

Also my games are cheaper in general at release compared to console so over the 8 year period I am saving anywhere between 100-200 randelas per game purchased (not to mention the steam specials that PC lovers get to enjoy) which all adds up to my next upgrade which won’t be monstrous, but enough to still be worth it.

But that’s just my view on it all anyway. There is no “better” or “cheaper” platform. The price over a 10 year cycle is the same for medium range gaming rigs vs consoles.

Naturally a very high end requirement for a PC is very expensive compared to consoles but it’s just as expensive compared to mid-range PC’s.

I think that’s the important missing part of my arguments… Mmmm. I never really mention I am talking mid-range and not high end.

The one mayor draw for console games, even though they costs much more on release, is that the 2nd hand market is HUGE. This way, console gamers save a lot of money. Also, PSN+

BUT….With the X1 and even maybe the PS4 doing what they are doing, this whole point is a nullity. PC gaming will become more attractive, especially if the PS4 will also charge a fee.

That I will definitely give to console gamers. Their 2nd hand market is a great way to get in to gaming cheaply.

However, as you said, if that market is harmed with the new releases of the next-gen consoles then there is going to be major trouble.

PSN+ is pretty cool I will admit. The problem is the specials on new AAA games isn’t quite as large (yet) as it is on steam. But I digress.

At the end of the day both consoles and PC have pros and cons. I fear though that next-gen consoles are throwing away the pro points of consoles in favor of taking on the cons of PC.

9 times out of 10 it’ll save you to have a friend with current dealer apps through suppliers, in essence cutting out the middle man. My last upgrade (CPU, MB, GPU, Ram, PSU) cost me almost R2500 less than it would have cost through the shops, AND it still cost me less than a console…

Any tonsil that buys a console on day one deserves the ass-raping as we all know they are paying too much and the existing game library is far too small to warrant the purchase. Let the fanboy’s get their consoles and purchase a bundle on Steam or a couple of titles you missed for your X360/PS3 to tide you over until the price drop and the library grows a bit.

There is so much sodium in this post, I might overdose (No offense, Darryn). Snark aside; the PS3 was launched with a BluRay player that cost near R2000 at the time, and under a company with a completely different philosophy back then. They will be looking to match Microsoft with their pricing this gen.

the xbox one is projected to be at 400 excluding the monthly online functionality. i think the ps4 represents alot more value for a gamer and movie lovers(ps4 will play 4k movies)
