The Playstation 4 is going to cost how much?

SimpsonsSpit-Take

By now, we’re getting ready for a next generation where we can finally be accused of being Playstation fanboys for a change. Ha! Progress. I’ve got a credit card and I’m not afraid to use it, but even if this turns out to be RRP, then the Playstation 4 is going to be more expensive than I imagined.

Phoenix-Tech has what we can guesstimate is a very, very presumptive price on the Playstation 4, or Playsation 4 as they call it. Purchase it from them, and you’ll be parting with 6599 Randelas ($691/ £457) .

That’s a ton of cash, and pretty close to what the original Playstation 3 cost when it was launched several years ago on this side of globe. Of course, this could also be a case of jumping on the bandwagon and snagging in some easy first-time adopters.

It’s unclear yet if Sony plans to launch the PS4 in line with other market trends, much like Microsoft did with the premium and core Xbox 360 models, or Nintendo and the Deluxe and standard Wii U versions that were on offer last year.

It’s also uncertain if the Playstation 4 will launch with a tube of complimentary Vaseline, but until we hear from the suppliers, take this with a pinch of salt. Thanks to Uberutang for the links.

Aren’t prices like this like placeholders?

    • Umar ‘No Shana’ Bastra

Indeed, we will most likely get another iteration and another cut some time next year, I wouldn’t be too worried, it is very rape-like though for Day one buyers

      • HvR

But daddy!!! I want to play CoD with Woofles TODAY!!!

  • Deon Steyn

Well if they cant spell the name right what good are their opinions? I putting away 7K anyways…. depending on their stance on second hand games

    • Charles

Yeah, I’m also keeping 7K on ice. Hopefully that will cover the console and 1 game.

    • Umar ‘No Shana’ Bastra

Did the PS 3 not launch at a similar price?

      • Deon Steyn

        Almost yes:)

R6599 more than I am willing to spend :P

Jokes aside, my own upgrade (for 5 year life, in case a console fanboy needs to troll) will be costing about R5k (MB+CPU+RAM+HDD)

But to each his own. I wonder how the OneBox will compare in pricing

    • Deon Steyn

A little bit cheaper than the PS as always I think. They use DDR3 instead of DDR5 :)

      • HvR

        R6499?

        • Admiral Chief Commander

          Hahaha that too

      • DieJason

Worried that the mandatory Kinect 2.0 is gonna hike up the price quite a bit

    • Scruff304

What rig you currently running? I think it time I start saving up and look for a new Mobo, CPU and Ram…

      • Admiral Chief Commander

The only thing relevant now is the PSU, case and GPU (7870OC)

I have 8GB, but its still DDR2 :( also tri-core AMD CPU. Faithful to the max! Has served me very well considering its been 5 years :)

Doing PROPER upgrade soon, that will last 5 years again

        • Scruff304

I’m currently running an i7 2nd generation, but my mobo went bang not long ago, and replaced it with a low level one… When I see what frames other are getting makes me realise i need an overhaul.
How is that GPU? I was eyeing it out the other day.

          • Admiral Chief Commander

Its beyond epic. Quite large though, but it runs quiet, runs cool.

Providing the rest of my tech is 5yo, I can put pretty much every game on at the very least High, and most on Ultra.

I got it for a good deal as well, also sold and paid for by an iPad I won :)

          • Scruff304

Nice! Always good when a plan comes together :)
Damn it, the temptation for a new card! *Looks over to credit card* “No, stop it!”

Where doth thee buy-eth thine hardware?

            Straight from the suppliers :P

          • Admiral Chief Commander

Heh, sounds like a drug deal :)

          • mancera

It may sound that way, but it isn’t that way lol

I work for an IT company and I can order straight from the suppliers and pay it back over a couple months… will be looking into doing that soon it seems… I need a freaking working PC that’s mine.

I’m still mourning the loss of my power supply and laptop.

          • Scruff304

Usually online, all the normal places. Sybaritic, Prophecy, Rebel Tech. Depends where the best price is :) Also gotten a few of my parts through my mates comapny, but he leaving them soon :( And you?

          • Admiral Chief Commander

Yeah RebelTech, Evetech is my source

  • TriangularRoom

Sad to say, it never pays to adopt technology early… we have a fat, noisy, very expensive early PS3 to prove it…

    • Umar ‘No Shana’ Bastra

All early consoles prove it, man when I bought the smexy xbox slim It sounded like an angel sleeping.

      • Skyblue

True, the older X360′s sound like an Airbus getting ready for take-off.

  • http://www.lazygamer.net Gavin Mannion

I guess we all need to get a second job

    • Jonah Cash

No, just wait a year for the slim models to arrive with a nifty price cut!!! My PS3 and Xbox 360 is till more than fine, and so far I don’t see next gen exclusive games yet…. So don’t see why I would want a next gen console as yet??? Or am I wrong???

      • DieJason

        AMEN GAMING -BROTHER!

      • fred

I admire your patience brother , but in the end we will all submit to the power of the One (or the ps4)

        • Jonah Cash

I will not submit to a console that forces me to pay extra for a second hand game!! I trade in old games to fund the new ones, so ONE is not viable for me!! Otherwise I would be able to buy maybe like two new games a year, and that is not worth it for me. I might have to return to my PC roots then….

          • fred

I’m with you man , just mentioned the one cause it sounded better , but it is scary that even ps4 might end up doing the same.

    • Umar ‘No Shana’ Bastra

    7K to be Beta testers?

Heck if i was a fan boy i would wait until 2nd gen of the PS4 launches to make sure all the shit is fixed

    • Jonah Cash

Not just for the PS4, same goes for the Xbox ONE (Shudder every time I have to write that name) Will wait for the slim consoles…..

I was right on the money, with unstable rand I still stand with my R6500 to R7500.

For the xbox take off R1000, since they are going to ride you with mandatory Xbox live R50 to R150 a month.

  • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

    Eina.

I’d rather spend that cash on my PC. Plug in the newly released 780 for that price and my PC would would fly.

This is why I just can’t get myself in to console gaming. It’s just too expensive to get in to and then maintain (in regards to game prices on consoles which all add up over time). It’s a pitty really because I honestly would enjoy having a console.

    • DaeMon

its still far cheaper than pc gaming….maintaining my pc has quite a price tag for replacing parts

      • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

Really? My last PC lasted 8 years and I didn’t have to replace much. In fact I think I changed my GFX card twice. Both times due to hardware failure.

No differant to someone needing to replace their console when it red-rings or whatever it is that consoles do.

The thing is it all actually evens out to the same price at the end of the day over a 8-10 year cycle.

You really shouldn’t need to be heaving out a lot of cash to maintain a PC. If you are then either you are overclocking too much :P or you have seriousbad luck with hardware.

        • DaeMon

Nah just upgrades…last upgrade was core2duo to i7…and hence new motherboard, RAM, case, GCard…all together cost more than double the price of a console.

also looking at your comment…that GTX780 by itself costs about R2k more than this rumored PS4 price not even looking at the other parts for a pc

          • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

My upgrade almost 2 years ago was from an AMD Athlon 64bit single core 3200+ with a GeForce 9600 in it. That PC served me well.

My upgrade cost me only 9k in total and will last a good while before needing to be replaced.

The mistake people make is to think that a PC must be able to run a game at max at all times. This isn’t really needed. Sure it’s nice but not a necessity.

My PC is a i7-2600 with a GTX560Ti in it and it will last another 8 years (barring any hardware failures) with maybe needing to put in another mid range card in 3 years or so when the GFX card really can’t anymore.

And anyone who says that I need better because the games can look better… Well even on medium spec games still look better than console counterparts so I still feel my money I spent was well worth it.

Also my games are cheaper in general at release compared to console so over the 8 year period I am saving anywhere between 100-200 randelas per game purchased (not to mention the steam specials that PC lovers get to enjoy) which all adds up to my next upgrade which won’t be monstrous, but enough to still be worth it.

But that’s just my view on it all anyway. There is no “better” or “cheaper” platform. The price over a 10 year cycle is the same for medium range gaming rigs vs consoles.

Naturally a very high end requirement for a PC is very expensive compared to consoles but it’s just as expensive compared to mid-range PC’s.

I think that’s the important missing part of my arguments… Mmmm. I never really mention I am talking mid-range and not high end.

The one mayor draw for console games, even though they costs much more on release, is that the 2nd hand market is HUGE. This way, console gamers save a lot of money. Also, PSN+

BUT….With the X1 and even maybe the PS4 doing what they are doing, this whole point is a nullity. PC gaming will become more attractive, especially if the PS4 will also charge a fee.

That I will definitely give to console gamers. Their 2nd hand market is a great way to get in to gaming cheaply.

However, as you said, if that market is harmed with the new releases of the next-gen consoles then there is going to be major trouble.

PSN+ is pretty cool I will admit. The problem is the specials on new AAA games isn’t quite as large (yet) as it is on steam. But I digress.

At the end of the day both consoles and PC have pros and cons. I fear though that next-gen consoles are throwing away the pro points of consoles in favor of taking on the cons of PC.

hahahaha your system is almost the same as mine….just that i have a standard 560 and not the TI

but thats still my point…pc costs are still much high than console costs…even counting the reduced costs of games the hardware is where the money goes

          • mancera

9 times out of 10 it’ll save you to have a friend with current dealer apps through suppliers, in essence cutting out the middle man. My last upgrade (CPU, MB, GPU, Ram, PSU) cost me almost R2500 less than it would have cost through the shops, AND it still cost me less than a console…

Just something to keep in mind…

So far, all I really want on next-gen consoles is thief, which releases sometime in 2014, with a GOTY edition(or similar inclusive of all DLC) probably only in 2015 somewhere, so in 2 years time, my e-bucks will buy a new PS4slim console, thanks FNB! :)

    Erm ? Ok I don’t think that’s THAT expensive ?

  • e1ace

If it’s R6600 now it would be almost identical to the PS3 launched almost 7 years ago. With inflation considering I’d say it’s pretty good price!

    • t-wholf

Agreed!!! with an average of say 5% interest per year compounded the ps4 would cost approximately R9150 today. So R6600 is a very good price.

  • Skyblue

Any tonsil that buys a console on day one deserves the ass-raping as we all know they are paying too much and the existing game library is far too small to warrant the purchase. Let the fanboy’s get their consoles and purchase a bundle on Steam or a couple of titles you missed for your X360/PS3 to tide you over until the price drop and the library grows a bit.

  • http://twitter.com/NinjasCreed Ryan Williams

I call the PS4 to cost 8k here in RSA.Whatever the price overseas is I always slap on a extra 2k.

  • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

Launch prices, you have to love them, but if push comes to shove and our local distributors try to screw us over again (as they did with the PS3 and xbox 360), I’ll just import again.

  • Argentil

There is so much sodium in this post, I might overdose (No offense, Darryn). Snark aside; the PS3 was launched with a BluRay player that cost near R2000 at the time, and under a company with a completely different philosophy back then. They will be looking to match Microsoft with their pricing this gen.

  • Rich

The price is only as high as the people will pay for the product. Think it is too expensive? Then don’t by one!

Vaseline? At that price point I’d ask for KY.
