The Order:1886 details revealed

Remember how excited I was about this new IP revealed at E3?  Well, we now have a few more details: it’s a third person action adventure with shooting mechanics.  Also, it’s a linear story-based game, being called a ‘filmic experience’.

In an interview released on the PlayStation blog, we get some more information.  The game takes place in London, in an alternative version of the Industrial Revolution.  Players will get to meet real historical figures during the game, similar to Assassin’s Creed, yet the timelines and creations may differ – this game is using steampunk elements.

Despite taking place in London, don’t expect 1:1 mapping:

There are obviously some things we’re going to put in there that don’t exist, and we’ve moved certain locations a bit, but as you can see from the trailer, when you pass in front of the Thames, Parliament is where it’s supposed to be and London Bridge is where it’s supposed to be. We don’t want people to go “Nah, this doesn’t look right”. You’ll be interacting with real people, real events and real places.

Beyond the basic explanation of genre for game play, there aren’t many specifics yet.  All that’s said in the interview is

There are gameplay features we’ll be talking about that will be very, very cool. Right now we’re playing with things – the moment-to-moment gameplay is really not what you might expect. We didn’t want to make it single-tone, where you rely on one single thing in expense of the rest.

    They went for the filmic resolution to enhance the visuals of the game. I like it, I am really excited for this. I hope it lives up to expectations, Ready At Dawn have potential.

    This looks cool & I’m interested in it, I’m just a bit worried about the “filmic experience” description. That makes it sound like it could be a “Press X to win” QTE heavy game.

      The resolution of the game is very wide. You get the black bands above and below. This gives the game a ‘filmic’ look, but also reduces the render scope allowing for better visuals. Dragons Dogma did something similar apparently.

      Yeah I worry about that as well. Linear-story telling in games can work. But it’s so easy to mess up as well

    Can’t say I’m intrigued, it’s set in England so there should be alot of grey people milling around grey buildings which contrast against the backdrop of a beautiful grey and overcast sky.

    Unless I get to blow London up into tiny piece I won’t be happy.
