The Order: 1886 would not be possible on any other console

Steampunk! Werewolves! And not one single reference to Van Helsing…yet. The Order: 1886 is looking like one confused PS4 exclusive. I’ve seen most of the trailers and I still can’t decide whether or not it excites me. One thing I am sure about is how damn gorgeous the game looks, and apparently that’s all thanks to the PS4.

Speaking at a recent Sony event, community manager at Ready at Dawn, J Goldberg, stated that The Order would not be possible on any other console. We all know the PS4 is powerful and a touch above the Xbox One in that department. But even that little bit extra means that The Order can run on the PS4, and nothing else.

At least, that what Goldberg seems to think, saying:

“We couldn’t have achieved this graphical fidelity with any other console.”

The Order: 1886 makes use of some insane full body motion capture technology, which allows the game to transition between gameplay and cutscenes without you even knowing it. The exact same character models are used for both, and apparently cutscenes will just be a matter of taking camera and game control away from you. It’s not a pre-rendered video, unlike most other games.

So yes, The Order: 1886 is going to look stunning, but that’s not the issue most have with the game. With what I seen so far, the game looks too stale and uninteresting. The premise excites me, and I adore anything steampunk, but hiding behind cover and taking shots like every other third-person shooter doesn’t scream innovation.

There’s still a lot of time between now and the February 20th release date, so here’s to hoping Ready at Dawn is just playing their cards really close to the chest.

Without innovating on the mechanics, if they have an enthralling story and keep it all interesting, then it’ll still be a success, and I’d still play it.

Yeah, PS players kinda missed out on a Gears of War type game. Uncharted had some of those mechanics but that was it as I remember.

Exactly, that’s what makes a great game – the sum of the parts.

Innovation is overrated, and most people don’t really want it anyway even though they say they do. Besides, how many innovations can you get in basic shooter mechanics… 1st person, 3rd person, cover, no cover.

Exactly. Sometimes it’s not good to innovate just for innovation’s sake. Keep the controls tight, gameplay fun, story captivating, and innovation suddenly is the last thing on your mind.

Based on the logic of all the naysayers, the new Doom game and Star Wars Battlefront will likely also be flops, because you know, stale formula and no innovation.

            July 24, 2014 at 14:24

You should use ellipses for a pause in that context, and if not then I need to speak to several English teachers.

          • ToshZA

            July 24, 2014 at 14:25

Elipses are probably more correct in written english, but the pause isn’t intended to be that long. Work with me here. xD

This is probably the first genuinely interesting exclusive for PS4. Let’s hope that gamers and critics don’t decimate the game based on the sole fact that it’s a cover shooter. Let’s hope they don’t have anything else to decimate.

Seriously, most of Sony’s exclusives focus too hard on being cinematic bullshit. Does Nintendo care about that? No. Does Microsoft? No. Does Valve? Hell no.

Actually, the majority of people want these. Hence the hype. There’s a reason Nintendo can’t compete with PS4 or Xbone. I love cinematic games because it actually gets you involved into the story and makes you care about the characters. It’s the only kind of game I’ll play. I also won’t play FPS because it’s hard to relate to a character you can’t even see. 3rd person cinematics is the way to go and high sales prove it every time. It’s not a coincidence that Naughty Dog is praised on a daily basis. That’s why other developers are copying their every move. Wake up and welcome to reality.

What hype? You mean the hype it had when it was announced and then plummeted down once more stuff about the game itself were shown? Oh god, that hype! (also only Sony fanboys are excited about this game).
No other development is “copying” Naughty Dogs, sorry, again, only Sony developers are. Do you see anyone making cinematic games for the Xbox One? No. Wii U? No. 3DS? Hell no. PC? Hahaha.

Continue paying for your $60 movies, kid.

Kid….hmmmm. I’ll take that as a compliment seeing that I’m 35 years-old. Anyway, you’re obviously jealous or pissed off about something. There’s plenty of gameplay in my “movies” so I will keep buying them. And yes, Assassin’s Creed is an example of cinematic 3rd person that plays on most systems. You don’t have to like or play these games, but again……millions of people love them and that’s FACT.You don’t like them? Fine. Then don’t buy them and quit being an ass on websites downgrading what the rest of us like.
