The next Gears Of War is going back to the basics

gears of war

I’m actually optimistic for a new Gears Of War game. Sure, Judgement may have wanted me to reinvent suicide as a group activity, but with the franchise now firmly under Microsoft control, I’m hoping that lightning strikes twice in much the same way that 343 Industries did with Halo 4. And whatever approach Gears Of War studio Black Tusk takes with the franchise, it’s going to be one that goes back to basics.

Which according to Xbox supreme overlord Phil Spencer, involves setting the tone and mood back to the 2006 original game. “The thing that was great about the early Gears of War games, to me, was just the epic scale of the settings that I was in,” Spencer said to IGN (Via GameSpot).

The story, the setting was a lot more what I would call soulful and maybe even a little dark. I think the game over time became almost more of a parody of itself; not for any kind of horrible reasons. It’s hard to continue to manage the IP.

And I think Spencer is quite right. While there’s nothing wrong with Gears Of War being a big budget war game, it was far more effective when it was throwing players into the dark and giving them limited resources and no one to rely on but their squad mates. That’s an efficient tone that was set and then lost in subsequent sequels. And something that I want to see return.

The first game still has a high benchmark of quality to overcome, something that the meh-tastic Gears Of War: Judgement couldn’t exactly hurdle over. “I know Judgment didn’t hit everybody’s needs and desires in terms of what they wanted,” Spencer said.

But we have a new team, (Rod Fergusson) is there to really help with the continuity. I think we can make sure that we’re investing in this thing for the next decade, which is how I want to think about it.

Keep it simple, small and compact. And that to me, creates a killer Gears Of War game. Well, and online matches that end up with my fellow industry peeps eviscerating me with curse words when I sneak up on them and start chainsawing away.

  1. Gears of War 1 is still one of favourite games. Gears of War 2 and Gears of War 3, just shit. Gears of War 2, I guess it was ok, just the small things made it shit. Gears 3, I could see the console’s age.

The South African groups that loved Gears, through all the hard hosting times, made the multiplayer fun. But Gears of War 3 was just shit, nothing could make that shit fun. I don’t know why I bought that shit.

Thank God for the Xbox One that I won’t be buying the next Gears of War game.

That is good news, I miss gears of war except the last one Judgement that was really not a good game.

So basically they want to make another 4 hour game that left me feeling disappointed and wishing I’d spent my money on something else?

Too bad they didn’t do the same, “Keep it simple, small and compact,” approach with Halo 4.

It might have been a better game than the earlier Master Chief Halo’s if it had.
