The new Super Smash Bros is being made…by Namco?

While Sony’s busy with its own version of Super Smash Bros by way of PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, Nintendo would like to remind you that it’s busy with the real deal – and that it’s headed to the 3DS as well as the Wii U. We knew that – so that’s hardly surprising. What is though, is that instead of stalwart Smash Bros developer HAL Labs on the job – Nintendo’s assigned the task to Namco.

It’s not the first – or even second time – that Namco’s been handed development duties for First Party Nintendo titles; they developed Star Fox: Assault for the Gamecube, and Mario Kart GP for arcades – and with teams from both Tekken and soul Calibur on the job, it’s a natural fit. Personally, I’d have preferred if it was Capcom given the duty; I far prefer their 2D fighters and they’ve shown incredible love for Nintendo franchises – having developed most of the handheld Legend of Zelda games.

Namco’s released a statement to keep fans of the series assured that Super Smash Bros will deliver – name dropping people from Soul Calibur and Tekken development.

“All the top creators from Namco Bandai gathered here to create a never-before-seen dream team for this project,”Namco Bandai’s Masaya Kobayashi said. “We will fully utilize our experience and knowledge in action fighting game development, technical capability, and organizational strength, and we hereby promise you that we will develop the best and most powerful Super Smash Bros. title ever.”

Worryingly, it seems as though development on the game hasn’t really started yet.

“I would love to provide more information, but for now, I’m going to stay quiet until I have something solid to show you,” Said Namco’s Masahiro Sakurai – leader of the team doing the development.  “The project has just gotten started. Bear in mind that not only are we developing two titles simultaneously, but we announced the project before we even started actual development, so I’m afraid we will likely have to keep you waiting for quite a while. Please be patient.”

It means we’ve likely got quite a while until we actually see anything real – which makes me wonder why Nintendo even mentioned it…at last year’s E3. At least we’ll have PlayStation All-Stars to play while we wait, eh.
