The Legend of Korra review round up

When it comes to action games, developer Platinum Games can do no wrong. They are the masters of making compelling action games with great combat systems. Darryn’s been pretty excited about their latest game, as it’s a licenced property on one of his favourite anime shows, Avatar: The Last Airbender sequel, The Legend of Korra. Seems like a match made in heaven. Only the game’s straight out of hell. Platinum’s done very, very wrong.

Here’s what critics have to say about the game:

Gametrailers – 6.5/10

LegendofKorra

There was so much potential for Korra when you consider the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a developer like Platinum to work on the combat, but it seems like the Japanese studio’s B-team showed up for this project. The game is certainly better than any of the previous efforts to adapt the Avatar universe, but it falls short of expectations. On its own, it’s just an average character action game with a bland story that offers little incentive to come back for seconds. You’re better off sticking to watching the show.

Destructoid – 7/10

LegendofKorra2

At the end of the day, I wish The Legend of Korra was a fully-featured retail release. While Platinum has done a great job in terms of delivering a solid action romp, the jarring cutscenes and open-and-shut story leave little in terms of replay value. Avatar and Korra fans will likely rejoice at the fact that they’re finally getting a decent game.

EGM – 6.5/10

LegendofKorra3

The Legend of Korra is a more-than-competent stylish action game and a fine example of Platinum’s pedigree, but as far as an authentic Avatar experience in game form? Not so much. Putting a premium on combat, not characters and story, waters down what makes this Nickelodeon series so special.

IGN – 4.2/10

LegendofKorra4

I have no idea who The Legend of Korra: The Game is for. It’s definitely not for young fans of Korra, as the combat is too unforgiving, the boss battles too tedious, the economy ridiculously punishing, and the story too weak and lacking any of the show’s charm. It’s not for older people who enjoy a good action game, because next to contemporaries like Batman: Arkham City, Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor, and even Platinum’s own Bayonetta 2, Korra looks terrible with its simple two-button combos and poor combat scenario design. I can’t recommend it to anyone.

Gamespot – 3/10

LegendofKorra5

The Legend of Korra has none of the crackle and drama that make the setting so special, but at least Iroh triggered memories of the grand journeys Aang and Korra have taken, and provoked hope that we might yet one day see a game that deserves the license.

Darryn, as you might expect, is inconsolable.

Game and review sites are so far up SJW ass, they don’t appreciate games any more. I don’t care what the reviewers say, I will buy Legend of Korra because it looks awesome.

From what I understand it’s some kind of slur directed to people who support non-discrimination by those who profess to support freedom.

you need to pick and choose your review sites / review writers.
journalists have oppinions, so you have to pay attention to the ones that have similar oppinions on past games as you.

that way, theres alot less to complain about and you get more reliable reviews.

its either logic and reson, or i agree and fill the page with my hate.
a game Ive been playing since 2006 got 3/10 from all the big review sites because it was “too difficult” after playing it for 30 minutes. the game has a learning curve that makes Dota look like tetris, but they gave it to guys who gave need for speed 10/10 for story.

These games tend to get put at low priority when it comes to quality since they believe the fans will just blindly buy it.

It is really rare to see a good movie/series game =/

I haven’t had a chance to play this till the finish yet but the bit I played this morning was actually really fun. Yeah it’s slightly bland, but the combat is uber fun and if you are a fan of korra there is so far enough fan service to keep you smiling.

I think people were expecting too much of the story for the price point.

Gamespot & IGN are just being the dudebro dicks of the review world again.

Honestly from one fan of the series to anyone else who is get the game, you will enjoy it.

mmm, dubious, not sure about buying the game though.
even the good reviews said it was lacking.
Ive enjoyed the legend of korra far more than i enjoyed the last airbender, that shit was tedious, so was looking forward to this.

but then again, the review sites were probably all like “its an anime slash action combat thing, lets put a reviewer on it that only plays CoD.”
like they do with most games that arent AAA titles.

As i say I got to play about 2 hours this morning, and I found it a lot of fun. Combat is wicked, once you get the hang of it, it’s really smooth and anyone who says it’s too challenging clearly has not played enough hack and slash titles because it’s really not.

I would say EGM and Destructoid gave it a fair score, it’s by no means the avatar game we all want or could be made. However for R150.00 on steam so far I am happy with what I’ve gotten, I get to play Korra and beat the crap out of people with bending, that’s what I was expecting.

Dunno maybe I am easy to please, but yeah i just think anyone who is a fan of the series and skips out on the game because of reviewers will be missing out.

pity, the art and styling were awesome, the combat looked like a bit much to get your head around at first, but once you get it, i guess it would get repetative.

another game I was looking forward to that looks to be a little disappointing.

I am not so sure those reviews are all bad – it was unlikely to get 10s but mid 6s to high 7s ain’t bad either. OK some outliers we need to consider obviously!
