Top 1001

Oh yeah, moving up the list now! Again, our disclaimer – this isn’t based on metrics, scores, or sales. Rather, these are 100 games and franchises that made us happy or intrigued. Also, we are a weird bunch and you may not agree with our taste. Sucks to be you.

80 – Crysis franchise (PC, Xbox 360, PS3)

Crysis 3 Gets Stunning New Screenshots 8

The perennial trial by fire for gaming rigs is still a damn good game. An open ended first person shooter where you play as a soldier codename Nomad wearing a badass nanosuit that makes you like a robot Predator.

On top of that, there are awesome weapons, vehicles, and a gorgeous open world island for you to explore while blasting aliens and the North Korean military. If you missed out on Crysis, you missed out on a premier first person shooter of the last gen.

79 – inFAMOUS Franchise (PS3)

Infamous

A game that truly spoke to both the Paragon and the Renegades, Infamous gives you control of Cole MacGrath, a bike messenger in Empire City caught in the midst of a huge explosion that gives him the power to wield electricity.

If that wasn’t awesome enough, you’re given the choice to be a total bastard about it, sending the city into chaos, or a nice guy, helping the citizens of Empire City. Despite the limited scope of the ‘karma’ system, Infamous was fun enough in it’s own right as a 3rd person action adventure.

78 – Torchlight (PC, Xbox 360, PS3)

Torchlight 1 year stomp

Dismissed by some as a simple Diablo clone, it was actually built by Diablo co-designers Max Schaefer and Erich Shaefer and brought some cool elements to the loot-based RPG. I loved my pet far too much, especially the fact that he would go back to town and sell off all my junk loot so I could keep dungeon crawling.

With beautiful graphics and addictive questing, Torchlight is a fantastic addition to the adventure RPG genre, and was on consoles before Diablo III. What’s not to love about a hack and slash lootathon?

77 – Devil May Cry 4 (PC, Xbox 360, PS3)

Devil may cry 4

Until this gem from Capcom had arrived, the then very young Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 had been lacking the kind of action game that would force people to take notice of it.

And brother, there was no way that you could ignore the fourth Devil May Cry. New chaarcter, new moves and a plot that was about as ludicrous as it was touching was all wrapped up in one slick package that proved that even a gamer may cry for joy.

76 – DarkSiders 2 (PC, Xbox 360, PS3)

Darksiders 2 death

Set during the events of the first Darksiders, Darksiders 2 tells the story of Death, a different horseman of the apocalypse. Combining dry wit, dungeon exploration and Prince of Persia-esque platforming and acrobatics, Darksiders 2 delivered a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

It didn’t improve or grow out of the first game, rather creating a unique experience with a new focus. With fantastic design and a fun main character, it was excellent to see the progression of the Darksiders franchise – such a same that we probably won’t see any more.

75 – LA Noire (Xbox 360, PS3)

La noire

Team Bondi’s LA Noire had some struggles in production, until Rockstar stepped in and made it happen. It was something new and different, which meant it had some good bits and plenty of less good bits. With fantastic facial animation, LA Noire let you interrogate suspects, using your actual or in-game intuition to determine if they were being upfront with you.

Unfortunately, pacing was uneven, character development was less than believable and controls could be a bit clunky. However, the game was revolutionary and definitely a landmark in this gaming generation.

74 – Blur (PC, Xbox 360, PS3)

blur

Until Blur had arrived, the idea of having cars race one another and engage in vehicular combat had been a niche idea, with Nintendo’s Mario Kart firmly dominating that arena.

But taking that corner and drifting into our hearts, Blur was a combination of both style and substance, with a visual side that was perhaps far too ahead of its time. Finely-tuned and tight around all the relevant corners, Blur was a blast to play, and even better when you roped in some friends to join you.

73 – Mortal Kombat (Xbox 360, PS3)

Mortal Kombat

What list could be complete without this classic fighting game? Mortal Kombat included the now-expected story mode that exposed players to the lore and play style of each character. Additionally, just about everything earned players coins, which could be used in the Krypt to buy all kinds of collectable content including locked fatalities and alternate costumes.

Mortal Kombat was packed with tons of the content and game modes to keep you entertained for hours. And it gave an awesome excuse to shout “Get over here!”

72 – Battlefield 3 (PC, Xbox 360, PS3)

BattlefieldPremium

In the world of modern military first person shooters, Battlefield 3 stands out as the shooter that understands how awesome military vehicles are. From tanks to fighter jets, Battlefield 3 throws coventional running and shooting out the window.

The 64 player PC multiplayer matches on huge maps perfectly suited to vehicles makes it a truly unique experience. Despite the average single player campaign, BF3 lives on due to the impressive scope of its multiplayer.

71 – Bioshock 2 (PC, Mac, Xbox 360, PS3)

Bioshock 2

Set in the fictional underwater city of Rapture, Bioshock 2 stars protagonist ‘Subject Delta’ exploring Rapture and killing the psychotic human population called ‘splicers’. Along the way you encounter new weapons and abilty altering liquids called plasmids and tonics, which grant you passive and active abilities.

With an engaging story and creepy detailed setting, Bioshock 2 is a must play for those wanting something different in contrast to run of the mill FPS’s. As the long awaited sequel to the first Bioshock, it was a decent successor – even if it had rubbish, tacked on multiplayer.

I don’t mean to be daft, but 64 players only is a bit silly, I need MOAR

I was jamming Planetside 2 this week, and only on ONE SEGMENT there were 200+ combatants, rolling in tanks, atvs, aircraft, apcs and on foot.

I really hope Planetside 2 cracks the 100 list!

No way Bioshock 2 was better than the first Crysis alone. Though the second and third Crysis probably dragged it down enough for it to be where it is.

    Darksiders 2 was pretty cool.
Busy with Bioshock 2 now – enjoying it.
LA Noire & Mortal Kombat are on the backlog, as well as on the PC 😛

Naturally we dont have any sure plans for the future of the series as we dont even have a development team.
So for now we will be analysing the situation and try to figure out whats the best option.

I don’t think it’s fair that some franchise games are in the top 100 as separate entries (Bioshock) while others are lumped together as “X Franchise” (i.e Infamous, Resistance or Killzone). How do you compare a franchise to individual games? I mean in one franchise you might even had games of differing quality and impact? And why is it just the Sony games getting this treatment? Mmmmmm! >_>
