The Last Guardian development is under ‘new conditions’

You know it's going to die in the game, right?

I don’t think we’ll ever see The Last Guardian released. Hell, it seems cruel to even keep on mentioning it as the project is approaching Duke Nukem Forever levels of development time. Team Ico’s first PlayStation 3 game might be their very first PlayStation 5 game at the rate development is ongoing. But fret not true believers, for I’m about to dangle a carrot in front of your face as I substitute your hulking frame for transportation, and tell you that the game is still coming. Now mush!

Sony has been adamant that they’re not giving up on The Last Guardian, with creator Fumito Ueda explaining to Kotaku that the game was being developed under ‘new conditions’:

Talks with Sony Computer Entertainment on The Last Guardian have been ironed out, and we’re making progress under completely new conditions.

Most likely a platform change to PlayStation 4, I’d imagine. With PlayStation celebrating 20 years of existence, Ueda was quizzed on what the most memorable part of the brand was to him. “The Last Guardian,” Ueda replied, “By which I mean all the hardships and the unforeseen amount of time required than what was originally thought.”

It’s been seemingly forever since The Last Guardian was announced way back in 2009. While Sony has been adamant that any news of the game being shelved will be made public, they’ve also chosen to remain quiet on the development of that title. And fans have faith in Team ICO, as their PS2 games Shadow Of The Colossus and ICO were rather fantastic and way ahead of their time.

I think it really is unfair to dangle this carrot in front of Umar’s face! Poor guy 🙂

I would be very happy if this game was cancelled and all the funds went into making a remastered version of The Shadow of the Colossus. That game was far before its time. The soundtrack and solitude still majestically haunt me.

People who are skeptical that this game will ever really happen aren’t considering just how much hype has been generated by the protracted nature of it’s development. By the time this game DOES come out (and I have no doubt that it will), it will have garnered an insane amount of attention from years and years of mystery and intrigue. For that reason alone this game will happen, Sony would be bat-shit crazy to not take advantage of this.

And disappoint in the same way that both Duke Nukem Forever and AC:Unity did. Overhyped, unfinished, buggy mess.

Yeah, but fans deserve either the game that they’ve hyped it up to be – or the final nail in the coffin if it can’t be. That’s all I’m saying.

Well, the fans are at fault in this case. They are hyping up the game, not Sony.

Oh I completely agree. My personal opinion is that it’s us gamers who are ruining the industry with hugely bloated and unrealistic expectations of developers.

But then devs need to not promise if they can’t deliver. 2 sides to every coin.

At least The Last Guardian isn’t promising anything more than “we’re still working on it”

The absolute best part of the game was the excitement of discovering what the next colossus looks like and figuring out how to kill it.

There is a widescreen HD version for the PS3. The PS2 version has dated considering 90% of the games draw is the Atmosphere and that can be broken by the limitation of the PS2 for instance the 7 layered ring of texture screening is clearly visible.

          I want a remastered version on the PS4 🙁

I dunno to me PS2 games on the PS2 emu look brilliant, I played MGS2 and that on the Emu and would chose that over any “HD uplift”

Still feel a little embarrassed when I walk into the store to purchase a PS2 game -_-

You can buy it from the PSN store on your PS3 if you have one, but if you can play it somehow I’d recommend it. There hasn’t been a game like this since

“under new conditions”… Like maybe actually finishing it, for a change?

I honestly believe this is vaporware – never to be played. I remember the gameplay footage they released many, many moons ago – it looked good. Apparently not good enough…

Let’s rather focus on their previous games, like Shadow of the Colossus… Maybe they can be relaunched in HD glory.

Maybe we’ll see it at the next Olympics? Even Sony said this themselves that Team ICO is the Olympian team. Seeing that they only release a game every 4 years just in time with the next Olympics.
