There used to be a time where a new Final Fantasy game meant instant chart-topping success, but lately, the franchise is beginning to lose some of its lustre. Recent games have been lukewarm and average in comparison to previous attempts, while the last online version of Final Fantasy was released to much negative criticism, regarding the broken gameplay and bug-riddled environments.

Such recent criticism has had an impact on the franchise, something that Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada readily admits.

With Square Enix still hard at work to bring the PC version up to a playable speed, this has understandably left the PS3 port of the title mothballed, or “Until the the best adventure and service could be provided”, says new director Naoki Yoshida.

“We’ll continue with our reform work, which basically amounts to fully redoing the game, and hope to revive the FFXIV that should have been released”, Wada elaborated. Having temporarily suspended any monthly invoicing for people who purchased the game, Wada apologized for failing to meet customer expectations. “The Final Fantasy brand has been greatly damaged,” Wada said.

“It was pretty much personally because I’ve been a player for so long. I wanted to make sure that I would only ask the player to pay for something that once I could say, ‘Okay, we have this planned, and we’re going to do this”.

“This is what we’re going to do, so this is the point where we can actually ask you for money.Without that, I personally, as a player, wouldn’t feel good about asking the player to pay money without that information”.

“The reason we’re doing this is we’re showing the players, yes, it’s still costing us a lot of money, and we’re not getting that money back yet, but we’re serious about making these changes”, Wada said. “This is one of the ways that we can show players that we are serious and we are taking it seriously”.

It may have been an absolutely disappointing experience when Final Fantasy 14 Online launched last year, but at least we can see that the studio and publishers behind the game are taking the matter seriously, and not just brushing it under the mat to try again with a new game, leaving dedicated fans fuming.

The changes implemented are beginning to create a more cohesive game, and its only a matter of time until we can finally play the Final Fantasy online game that we were promised originally.
