The Crew’s net requirement won’t play well with solo gamers

The-Crew

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Racing game fans are spoilt for choice these days. One such game that I’ve had an eye on, is Ubisoft’s The Crew. It looks like a great mix of tight gameplay and solid visuals. Pity that they always-online requirements might be a deal-breaker.

Because the game will require a permanent connection, the second your net drops will result in the game dropping you back to the main menu. Sound about right for every online game ever made, that includes lobbies? Yes, yes it is. But this also includes any gamer taking part in the single-player mode.

“I think it’s going to kick you out of the race,” creative director Julian Gerighty said to VideoGamer. “It’s one of those things that the game needs to work with an internet connection so I think you’re going to lose the race you’re in.”

It’s not the most elegant of solutions. It’s not good news, I’m afraid, but it’s just part and parcel of… You know, you’re doing an instance on World of Warcraft, you lose your internet connection and that’s it.

I’ve got to admit though that I think our connection is a little bit more elegant than the Origin/EA server thing, but I’d have to get more details to give you a complete rundown. That said, it’s safe to say that if you’re doing a mission, you lose your internet connection, you’re kicked back to the boot screen.

Crew

So why does The Crew need to always be online in the first place then? Because it’s a natural part of the game, according to Gerighty. “It’s a little bit like, if you think of World of Warcraft, nobody would ever complain about the fact that you need an internet connection to play,” he said.

Just like that The Crew [requires] an internet connection to play. It doesn’t stop you from playing solo. In fact, I’m more of a solo player. But you’re playing in a world that’s alive, that has anecdotes that emerge out of somebody who does a jump over you and that you try and catch him and you create a crew and you go on missions together. But you do need that internet connection for the game.

To be honest, I’m not exactly choked up about this. Ubisoft has mentioned numerous times how The Crew would be an online experience, and this feature only hits those of us who aren’t rocking an ADSL connection. Hell, all my games feature some kind of online content these days, that I’ve become used to.

The real key to people accepting this game, will be to see how stable the Ubisoft servers remain, which shouldn’t be a problem since The Crew is making use of peer-to-peer connections. The Crew will launch later this year, on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

  1. You learnt nothing from Blizzard with Diablo 3 or EA with SimCity didn’t you? A SINGLE PLAYER GAME DOES NOT NEED TO BE ONLINE. OBVIOUSLY it has to be online if you want to play multiplayer. How stupid do you think people are? I mean, yes, they’re stupid, but not THAT stupid. This is more insulting than anything else.

Yeah no, not a problem. They’ve stated that it’s going to be an online focused game. Nothing wrong with that really, not like they pulling a Sim City on us

Online is all we ever heard from Ubisoft. That goes hand in hand with uPlay. But I bet the SP part for the consoles wont require internet. To this I say to Ubisoft and uPlay

This doesn’t really bother me. From the start I was under the impression that The Crew was going to be mainly focused on MP, never even considered the SP. I’m quite excited about this, but if it only runs through Uplay then there’s no way I’m getting it.

Lets just show our support and buy it anyway.
We should have nothing but praise for anyways on line as it expands the experience.

Because if we praise this and don’t complain they may trust us and next time and not do this.

Yeah, so when has P2P ever been a success?
It literally destroys the MP element of most games. There is a reason why MP began with the use of dedicated servers, YOU CANNOT rely on peoples residential internet connections for a lag-free gaming experience. Fucking hell Ubisoft do you actually have people working at your company? Or is it just run by special education schools?

This game has proven to me ONLINE will not sell. Done with Ubisoft and their bullshit. There is i’m reason losing interest in gaming, and its not because I hate gaming.

Forcing a person online to play alone is just ignorance on their part. Its like forced marketing. There is nothing revolutionary about ‘The crew’. Its just dull side missions and got awful graphics even at 4K resolution.

Again I stress the words “I’am done with Ubisoft” Ubisoft believes they know what I want. Division going to be another boring fetch quest game, with over the top nickel and dime DLC. No thanks! Any idiot can see the reason behind always online (Micro transactions) It has nothing to do with “Game play experience”
