Switzerland exposed as cheaters in the World Nations Tournament

busted

After beating a South African Battlefield 3 team competing in the World Nations Tournament on Saturday, Team Switzerland has been caught out using a glitch/hack. They’ve now been punished with a forfeit, but was this punishment harsh enough? I think not.

The two teams faced off in what seemed to be a very intense match, South Africa giving it their best but not having what it takes to beat the glitching hack used by the Swiss. The local team might have stood a fair chance and won the overall game had the Swiss not cheated, who knows. The Captain of the Swiss team doesn’t seem to think it changed anything, commenting:

Sir-D12 not see the advantage that it has given us…”

But what’s been done, is final and the administrators of the World Nations Tournament made their verdict.

“Hi everyone, due to presented evidence of Swiss Team cheating (glitching) in yesterdays match against Team RSA, we are going to forfeit Strike at Karkand (second map) in favour of Team RSA. What will change overall score of the match to RSA 2 – 0 CH – as RSA won first map of the match. We suspect that glitching took place at around 1:42:30 mark of first round on map Strike at Karkand (http://de.twitch.tv/roobiin_/b/368390401) at score (CH) 41:33 (RSA). From this point Swiss Team abused the game bug by spawning on glitched player, where they should have him suicide/reload the game. We also know that this player was not lagged out or freezed out as if that was the case player would be gone from that game. Therefore Swiss Team was fully aware of the glitch and intentionally abused it. Here’s the glitch itself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxYyQGYC6pU.”

Even though it’s good to see that teams are being penalized, a forfeit is probably not punishment enough. This is after all, an international tournament. Rule 1.7 of the World Nations Tournament clearly states that “Cheating/Hacking will not be tolerated. Any team caught cheating will be banned from the tournament immediately (glitching is cheating).” But this quite obviously didn’t happen, which means that in a way it is being tolerated and teams might still take the chance to cheat to win, because the only consequence is a forfeit to a game they could possibly have lost anyway.

Teams caught out cheating only get punished for cheating with a forfeit, for the first two offenses, leaving teams with that little gap, to try it again. Being ousted for the third time only, will earn them a ban from the tournament. If punishment for cheating in international tournaments isn’t severe enough, how can we take eSports seriously?

I like bacon and games, and occasionally I say something coherent about it. I'm not old or cynical, and I'm not the Dork Knight. I AM SHE-RA! Wait, what?

  • Deon Steyn

I heard Lance Armstrong plays for the Swiss.

      kaas man

    • Ozone

i heard your mom plays with Armstrong.

      • Deon Steyn

yes she does and they are both very happy. It’s nice having a rich guy in the family.

  • http://www.lazygamer.net Gavin Mannion

I think eSports needs to take a tougher stance against cheating in general.. it appears to be rife and nothing really happens when you get caught

    • GTO

Not sure that is true really. This is already harder than most “real sports”. Cheat in Soccer and you get a yellow card, if you get away with an offside pass it can win you the game, as can diving in the penalty box. Neitehr of those actions auto lose a game for the entire team, at worst the individual is punished.

  • Prolific

This is also one of the reasons why e-sports isn’t being taken as seriously as it should – if you bend the rules when you want, why have them? How is that a level playing field? I think all competing teams should just refuse to compete against known cheaters (i.e. CH in this case) – maybe then the organisers will get the message.

On another note – SteelSeries! Great sponsorship and I love your keyboards!!

  • Admiral Chief Erwin

    I thought they were neutral?

  • Purple_Dragon

Should have been a ban. Cheating is cheating.

    • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

I need to get me one of those!

  • Uberutang

TBH it might have been a ‘honest’ mistake? Initially anyway. There is that bug on that map and the first few spawns on the ‘immune’ player could have been accidental. But good on the WNT to give the match to SA, we deserve it!

  • Admiral Chief Erwin

Although, how long did this glitch/hack occur, or were they doing it the whole time?
If it was one incident, then I’d say that they were naughty, but tell me, what rugby player hasn’t put his hands in the ruck? Not that its right in any way.

If this is the constant way that they were playing, then yes, banhammer. But if it was just this 38 odd seconds, then maybe stern warning, and move on?

    • http://www.lazygamer.net Gavin Mannion

When does it become a bigger issue? One kill on a glitch can be heat of the moment… spawn camping a glitch just feels that much worse?

      • Admiral Chief Erwin

I’m not sure how long they were doing it. If it were in the heat of the moment etc and only as long as the video clip, then I’d say slap on the wrist.

If they were repeatedly doing this (20 times or a couple of minutes etc) then allmighty banhammer yes.

From the video, it looks like (correct me if wrong) only 2-3 guys spawned.

Again, I’m speaking under the assumption that it was only for that 38 (or less) odd seconds.

        Thoughts?

EDIT: It seems like it was for 60 tickets, in which case, I say ban them!

    • Anon A Mouse

It went on until 60 tickets where drained (whatever that means) but it sounds like it went on for a while. To use you rugby analogy I see it as being constantly offside 5 meters from your goal line which is a professional foul. Yellow card the bastards and get on with the game.

      • Admiral Chief Erwin

        Sjoe, 60 tickets? That’s a blatant cheat.

Ban the neutral bastards I say, RED CARD!!!

        • Ozone

i say, fuck you stupid bastard.

          • Admiral Chief Erwin

I take it you are one of the Swiss cheats then

          • Admiral Chief Erwin

I take it you are one of the Swiss cheats then

          • SebaFFM

40 tickets, and RSA still won..the link to the match is posted in the article, go see for yourself (Twitch)

          • Admiral Chief Erwin

Cheating is cheating. You can sugar-coat, you can justify, but it’s still cheating. You are only making it worse by now trolling. It means you have no remorse.

This is why I believe eSports isn’t seen as an actual sport. There is no governing body and no set of standardized rules for tournaments / competitions. Nothing that flings around laws and regulations willy nilly will be taken seriously by myself and I’m sure by the majority of free thinking people.

    • Sir Captain Rincethis

I thought Yolanda posted an article a few weeks back about how there actually is a governing body in the SA government that deals with the laws of eSports? Or am I thinking of something different?

  • Darth_Clericus_The_Ultimate

    So we still win right?

  • Sir Captain Rincethis

I wonder, is there a doping law for eSports?

    • Uberutang

      Dear lord I hope not…

      • Sir Captain Rincethis

Hehe, legit question though. If it is considered international, and a real sports, then surely? Blood tests and all?

        • Uberutang

But not all countries have the same dope laws…

          • Sir Captain Rincethis

I would think it would be a law of the institute/corporation/company though? Not of the land? Especially because of your point. Just like I can pretty much guarantee that there is no country that has a law for glitches ;) *Rincethis walks up Kloof Street, glitches, ‘Papa wag vir yo…’

    • Banana Jim

“Doctor… this man has copious amounts of cheese curls and iron brew in his blood stream”
“Cheese curls? The Fiend, that’s a prohibited substance in the eSports League. Quick.. call the internet police!”

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Logan-Young/717901559 Logan Young

If there was I’m pretty sure caffeine would be on the “permitted substances” list along with stuff like weed… I’m given to understand a lot of gamers smoke it…

    • Purple_Dragon

Yes, I wonder. I am sure taking substances like Ritalin can perhaps help performance?

      • Sir Captain Rincethis

My thinking, or coke! It would explain the ‘yo mamma’ comments :)

        • Draco Lusus

Coke (the drug) and Ritalin are very similar. I’d have to say that Ritalin won’t give all that must performance boost. Just the ability to focus for longer periods (if the person is ADHD) if they aren’t it will just make them super wired and not function as they would expect.

  • BF3 FTW!

This seems a bit strange to me…

In the above video you see two people from Team Switzerland being killed quickly when spawning on the glitched player…

So, Team South Africa is actually getting some quick/easy kills on opposing players, yet Team Switzerland was leading at the time when this started happening and still managed to win the game. Even with getting the spawn kills, Team South Africa still couldn’t take the lead. If anything, wouldn’t Team Switzerland have won with a bigger margin had this not happened?

    • Ltrick

So the RSA team should have camped at A the entire time the glitch was occuring in order to kill anyone who spawned on him? Neglecting four other flags in the process? Even if one of them had just stayed behind at the flag they would have been destroyed if the land of the swiss decided to bring their vehicle around or simply commit 2-3 players. You are basically stating that a spawn beacon is irrelavent in the game. What could be more advantageous than an indestructable spawn beacon placed directly next to a flag?! It seems to me that you are quite the BF noob

      • SebaFFM

maybe, RSA should have won the other maps instead of getting raped.. how well did your attack on Karkand go? oh, lost with 100+ tickets..

        • http://www.lazygamer.net Gavin Mannion

Personally I don’t think it’s about who the better team is.. there is a moral point here and I am amazed that everyone doesn’t agree that cheating is completely unacceptable.

  • http://twitter.com/Otto_ki Otto_ki

I don’t even play battlefield anymore because of all the glitches in it… Not that I hate the game its a very beautiful game with a huge amount of thought put behind the development.

But by not implementing a client and rather going though a website to start a game was strike 1 to the game, and once your in people just abuse every single glitch they find and it never feels like there is anything being done to fix all the problems.

  • Cabbit

I’m with Gavin and Yolanda on this. More severe actions should have been taken by the admins. This really sends out a very negative image of the esports rules, regulations, and organizers themselves. Not to mention what sponsors and future athletes might think. Most main stream sports have appropriate measures to deal with individuals and teams like this. The swedish captain wasn’t even apologetic about the incident. Glad they were caught but it makes me wonder how many teams get away with this kind of behavior.

  • Sir-D12

I a the swiss team captain Sir-D12 its very funny this forum i dont know who make this but you just
one of my sentences who interested you….i explained how the bug occurred in the game.

    • mornelithe

I think the proper course of action would’ve been to, you know, stop using the bug, rather than abuse it while explaining it in the game.

    • Ltrick

How is it funny? Shouldn’t you be arguing about what took place instead of how the article was written? You cheated. Nothing you say after the fact changes that. Be mad all you want, it doesn’t make a difference.

  • Ozone

Yolanda why you not put all conversations and explanations of Swiss team with the WNT organizers
instead of put one phrase of the swiss leader ?

  • SebaFFM

this article really is a joke.. Fox news style at its finest.. thank God RSA didnt move on to the next round.. How can someone take the Author seriously, if she cant (didnt bother to) get the facts right??
