Surprise! Pokémon is selling pretty well

The latest games in the Pokémon series, Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are out in the US and Japan. In the three days since they’ve been available at retail, they’ve sold a combined total of over 3 million copies. That’s despite essentially being remakes of older games.

According to Japan’s Gematsu, about  1,534,593 of those sales come from the land of the rising sun, with the rest made up of US and Australian sales. The game has yet to be released here and in Europe, so expect the number to go up quite a bit by Friday. That’s really not bad going. The last Pokermans sold 4 million copies within two days of availability, but that was a result of a simultaneous global launch. Pokémon X and Y  have now gone on to sell more than 12 million copies worldwide. Nintendo’s Wii U might not be doing as well as anyone had hoped, but the company’s going to be just fine.

And honestly? I don’t get it. Yes, X and Y added some fancy 3D, but the core of the Pokémon experience has been exactly the same since the first games launched in the 90’s. I played the heck out of Red and Blue, and have had very little desire to play any other games in the series for more than about an hour before boredom threatens to take me away.

Will you be picking up Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire when they’re available this Friday, or do they contain a little too much water for your liking?

I wonder if they would ever release this for the WiiU. That might just push the WiiU sales up a tad.

It would skyrocket the Wii U sales.

Heck. The controller could be used to choose your attacks, inventory etc.

    It’s the adventure factor Geoff.

To travel across the lands. To search far and wide.

It’s all about the mystery and not knowing what you will find in the next part of the map.
