It’s almost here, the biggest tournament of its kind in South Africa ever. The StarCraft 2 Invitational this weekend is going to be something spectacular and a little bird, okay maybe a big bird, told me that there is a significant amount of people who will be attending. Behind the scenes of a big event like this, people are working really hard to make sure everything is a success, one of the companies contributing a crucial part to the event, is Internet Solutions. We had a chat with Sameer Parker – the man in charge, about the event, what they’ll be bringing to the table and their part in the local gaming community.
StarCraft 2 Invitational
What exactly will Internet Solutions be contributing to the event?
IS Gaming is sponsoring a 500 seater auditorium at The Forum. Additionally, we are supplying the infrastructure comprising a solid fibre optic connection to the venue, guaranteeing speeds of 92-95Mbps and average latency of 2 milliseconds local.
What is the significance of the event to eSports in South Africa?
Never before has an event of this size, nor this importance been hosted in the country. With an MSSA accredited international test match being hosted, and additional tournaments running through the day, this event will give some of South Africa’s best gamers the opportunity to compete at truly world-class broadband speeds.
Why is it important that local gamers attend and support the event?
Gamers will get exposure to international gaming skill, and get to experience and interact with the local gaming community. In addition, this event will be part of a series of events. Moving forward, IS Gaming will host more community-type events with equally fast bandwidth. The more gamers are exposed to international gaming standards, the more competitive they will become.
Importance of Internet Solutions to the community
What does Internet Solutions currently do for the local gaming community?
IS invests enormous amounts of money and manpower into ensuring that our network speed is among the highest, and our latency the lowest in the country. Additionally, IS Gaming hosts numerous community gaming events throughout the year. These events give gamers the opportunity to experience world class broadband speeds – this has always been a concern in the gaming community, and has held them back from being truly competitive. IS Gaming believes that this is the start of a series of events that will allow local gamers to become more globally competitive.
What would the consequences be should Internet Solutions not be able to contribute to the community anymore?
The gaming community is passionate – if IS Gaming was not involved, gamers would find ways and means of making it happen. However, IS Gaming is committed to the community for the long-run. We don’t want gamers to have to battle to be competitive or even participate. IS Gaming is working to remove the challenges of gaming from the equation – these include latency and speeds. If South African gamers have world class infrastructure, they can focus on improving their skill on both a local and international platform.
Growing eSports in South Africa
What is needed from Internet Solutions’ point of view, to grow eSports locally?
eSports need to be made more mainstream. Oversees, these are big spectator sports – they pull really big crowds. Locally, we need to encourage attendance and change the culture to one that is interactive. Through better participation and spectator attendance, the credibility of the sport will grow.
The second aspect of this is gamers need better connections and bandwidth to their homes. Better speeds mean better gamers.
What change is needed from the community itself, in order to assist companies like Internet Solutions in growing eSports?
Come and support. Engage. Additionally, IS Gaming welcomes input – if we are to work well together, it must be a dialogue, where gamers make known their requirements.
Why does Internet Solutions think local gaming and eSports is worth investing in?
Gamers have pushed the boundaries of hardware, software and computing power – much as been developed as a result of the high expectations of gamers. For IS, if we can keep gamers happy, this will translate to a superior network infrastructure – it will be far more robust and reliable than any corporate client will ever need.
Companies like Internet Solutions, investing in eSports is something really important to the community, not only because we need faster internet speeds to better ourselves as gamers on an international level, but also when it comes to affordability, and that’s just when it comes to gaming from home. When it comes to live events, we haven’t always been able to host many tournaments for games that require internet connections, but that’s fast becoming a reality and something that’s happening more often. Internet Solutions has been a great driving force and crucial part of this. The local eSports scene is growing at an incredible speed, thanks to the awesome people at Internet Solutions and Megarom making events like this one happen.
If you want to go to the event, it’s not too late! You can RSVP here, entry is free.
