Star Wars: The Old Republic’s expansion goes for nostalgia

Revan

When EA and Bioware first announced Star Wars: The Old Republic, I was rather excited. And then I realised the game was an MMO, at which point I spat on the ground, cursed EA’s name and then went foetal, crying myself to sleep. You see, I loved Knights of the Old Republic – and really, I just wanted more of that. Years on and I have continued to ignore The Old Republic. That could change. Its newest expansion pits you against Revan.

The expansion is coming on December 9, and the $20 outlay will get you “five new levels of story-driven missions”, along with a level cap increase to 60.

In the new expansion, players will be set to “face Revan, one of the galaxy’s most revered characters” in the new expanded missions, set in “new worlds”.

“In the Shadow of Revan, a long-hidden sect of extremists has emerged from the ongoing war between the Sith Empire and the Galactic Republic. This group is led by Revan, the former hero of the Jedi Civil War. These fanatical “Revanites” are gathering an army with an apocalyptic plan that will leave the Republic and the Empire in ashes. Players will prepare to face Revan and adventure alongside a host of intriguing characters, including Theron Shan, Lana Beniko, and Jakarro the Wookiee.”

Man, would I love to see what’s become of Revan. Pre-orders for the expansion are available now, and are subject to timed pre-order incentives – which is, as far as I’m concerned, a bit of a dick-move on EA’s part. Here’s what those who pre-order early will get:

Players who pre-order by November 2, 2014 will receive:
– One week of Early Access to Shadow of Revan starting December 2
– Exclusive Grand Statue of Revan to display in Player Strongholds
– The Digital expansion: Rise of the Hutt Cartel (subscribers automatically receive Rise of the Hutt Cartel)

Players who pre-order by December 1, 2014 will receive:
– Exclusive Grand Statue of Revan to display in Player Strongholds
– The Digital Expansion Rise of the Hutt Cartel (subscribers automatically receive Rise of the Hutt Cartel)

Subscribers who pre-order the digital expansion will receive a Class Experience Boost as a bonus with the following details:
– Players are offered 12x experience gain while playing exclusively through class story missions up to Level 55
– The boost is effective immediately and expires on December 1, 2014

Do you play The Old Republic at all? Are you keen to battle Revan if you’re one of the people who played through KoToR?

Of course, with Revan pretty much the dungeon boss, it pretty much ends the possibility of there ever being a Knights of the Old Republic 3 – at least one that continues the same story.

Imagine if they made a KOTOR 3 and you could import your save from KOTOR 2 and your character from KOTOR 2 would be the central character of the storyline and depending on how you played (light, dark) and who you killed and spared the story would have important changes.

They could even bundle a remastered KOTOR 1 & 2 as part of a collector’s edition!

I played it a little. It is quite awesome when you treat it as a single player experience. Problem was when I reached a place where I needed help to do group missions, I lost interest because I do not really go for online gaming since WoW…and my ADSL line was stolen years ago so cap is an issue. I can only imagine what they could accomplish if they put all this effort into a AAA KotOR 3, or even start a new trilogy with carry-over options like Mass Effect.

You should give SW: TOR a chance Geoff, it’s actually a pretty solid game, and you can largely ignore the MMO side of it if that’s not your cup of tea. The free to play model is a bit painful, but that’s EA doing the nickle & dime thing, & not a problem with the game itself

I’m definitely pre-ordering this when I get home, & I’m really keen to see what the new content looks like 🙂

I played the BETA. Uninstalled it after 15 minutes. It was like going back to the 90’s.

I love Star Wars. But $20 for an expansion to a game I do not want? No! Just plain and simple. NO!

well, the game is now F2P. basically, you can buy the expansion when you are lvl 50 and move on from there.

      You should try it

In the current SW:TOR mmo, you face Revan and HK 47. So it is pretty cool that they make him appear again.

Yeah, that is a shame and a bummer. (Shummer?) And it’s really hard to elaborate further on this without spoiling one of the best Star Wars games ever for anyone who hasn’t had the chance to play it yet. (Everyone should go do that now so we can have a proper spoilery discussion about this.)
