Star Wars: Attack Squadrons cancelled

I have you now...

I don’t think anyone has experienced great space combat in gaming untile they’ve played at least one Star Wars game AND GET BACK IN YOUR HOLE STARLANCER!..Ahem. The Star Wars Rogue Squadron games are great examples of the genre, from PC all the way to the Gamecube. A new version of that revered genre was on the way to PC. Was.

And it’s now deader than the pilots who took a suicide run on the original Death Star. According to CVG, Disney has unleashed their fully operational Death Cancel laser on the game, which would have been a free to play title.

Area 52 was working on the project, with the cancellation being announced on Facebook and the official website.

We want to thank all of the fans who participated in the closed beta of Star Wars: Attack Squadrons.

After much consideration, we have decided to cease development so that we can focus on other Star Wars game experiences.

We truly appreciate the time you spent engaging in the beta.

Well dammit. I’ve been following the game since December 2013, hoping to rekindle some love for the space combat genre. And after the cancellation of Star Wars 1313 and a Darth Maul standalone game, I feel like I’ve just been force-kicked in the mini-midichlorians again.

Same here. I adored that game. I actually had no choice to upgrade my graphics card for it back in the day.

I think people need to get used to the fact that Half Life 7 1/2 will be our before a decent Star Wars game comes along 😛

True, but imagine the rage if Valve cancelled three Half Life games in a row so that they can focus on other Half Life game experiences.

And therein lies the rub. I’m not a rabid trekkie – so can someone who is please enlighten me – but I cannot remember a single good trek game. Star Wars seemed to translate to video games much better than Trek.

I think it’s probably because Wars is a lot more focussed on individuals – a team of individuals; but each one is important and has a story and skills and uniqueness. Trek is about Spock or Kirk or their Next Gen/Deep Space 9/Voyager counterparts.

Movies versus TV series essentially. The fun involved in blowing up a giant space station by piloting your own x-wing against all odds, or force wielding your way through millions of idiotic subordinates is so much more than working out some way to save a planet full of primitive natives without revealing your presence and breaking the prime directive.

Sorry – but all I can think of is that that 1992 “Star Trek 25th Anniversary” MSDos game … the one in which ensign expendable in the red jacket ALWAYS copped it.

Nope they make the people who thought Jar Jar Binks was an OK character do that. The ones who though he was awesome are never seen or heard from again.

It must be voice controlled only no controller allowed. That way you will get the authentic experience of Commanding a Star Ship.

They canned it after beta test! o_0 This must have been an abomination.

And I will throw Star Wars Star Fighter (PS2) out there as a less than brilliant Star Wars space combat game.

The problem with this game I think was that it was just dogfights. I feel like rogue squadron was truly enjoyable because of the campaign. If they brought out like a rogue squadron where like 16 people could work coop against hundreds of tie fighters or something that it’d be pretty good http://bit.ly/1jKn0PH

The new business model for star wars games is to announce, create, and cancel. Brilliant!
